Title: Upload your colony for the trailer
Post by: ison on November 16, 2017, 11:37:56 AM
Hello everybody,

we are making a trailer for RimWorld and we need your help. We would like to show some great, big colonies in the video so if you are interested, we would like you to upload the savefile of your colony in this thread.

Of course the more impressive the colony the better, however we would also like to see some big but not super-rich colonies, so if you have been playing for a while, it would be great if you could upload your colony!

It is important for the colony to be purely vanilla (no mods ever used) and from Alpha 18.

It is also important to note that uploading a colony in this thread or providing a link to download your colony means that you give us permission to use it in any way, including using it in the video and then using the video in any way. We would like everyone to write at least a short sentence that you agree to give us such permission.

Thanks!

Do you want the save, or just a screenshot?

What kind of resolution are you looking for?

Of course you have permission if I'm using content from your game, and posting it publicly on your forum, in a thread that's asking for this content explicitly for that purpose.

What if the only thing we have tweaked is the power output of the ship reactors (and letting them be built under mountain) as well as the max pawns with story tellers?  Thats how I get my massive mountain fortresses.  Might be to rich of a colony either way though.

We need the savefile so we can take multiple shots, sorry, I'll clarify it in the post.

I think in this case it's ok. If there are no new non-vanilla objects and the savefile is loadable in vanilla then I think we can use such colonies.

Which is the time frame / time limit? As in how long are you going to wait us?

Once I came back from playing after years I watched the last trailer. Everything was alright, especially switch between peace and fight, but there was an exception that bothered me: when I was seeing all these rectangular buildings then suddenly a star building, which made me impressed, but it looked more discouraging as it was overwhelming for me. I thought I wouldn't make such a great colony and end of story.

I've just watched the trailer once again and it didn't affect me as I have played and learned a lot about RimWorld mechanics, but trailers are directed to potential customers who haven't played RimWorld yet. I suggest removing the significant contrast in appearance of the buildings, of course, not refraining from mounting that much impressive buildings. This is just my opinion and advice, I'm not a professional, I'm not certain if I am right about what I have just said.

A giant burning colony seems like a perfect example of RimWorld.

I suppose moderately-sized colonies won't fit the bill?

Define 'size': Spread-out colony taking up a load of site map? Highly developed? Scores of pawns? Biggest map? Lots of scattered (populated) colonies across the world?.. etc etc

The first option above should preclude walled-off settlements on tiny map size no matter how awesome they are, but that's just my opinion..

We're trying to shoot the video as soon as possible, so it would be great if we could finish it by Monday. The A18 hasn't even been released yet, but we're hoping to get some savefiles from the unstable build.

@PatrykSzczescie: makes sense, thanks for the feedback. I think we'll mostly focus on real, mediocre colonies, with only a few shots from super-bases.

I think it will! We're not sure yet which shots we'll use for the final video though, there are extra points for using less common biomes!

Define 'size'

They don't have to be huge, mediocre 1-year colonies are also fine. We're mostly looking for variety so we can show multiple bases in different biomes.

I give Ludeon permission to use these savefiles in any way, including using it in the video and then using the video in any way.  If the devs happen to have older versions of these colonies, they are free to use those too.

First time using dropbox properly, so hopefully I set this up right...

https://www.dropbox.com/s/tblc2ixsnoylgec/Carpenter%27s%20Stream.rws?dl=0

This is my second colony I've made since starting the game., built on a Boreal Forest / Large Hills tile. It's in its 7th year, currently in the process of expanding outer walls and a marsh-draining operation. Had a pretty rough start, but it's been in full stride for a while now. Also includes a poor brain-damaged arctic wolf with the unfortunate name of Stupid. The brain damage came after the name.

Edit: You have my full permission to use this colony any way you see fit.

Got a couple of contributions here:

The ruins of Mother's Stream, a proud end-game colony where everybody managed to escape, and has been abandoned for two quadrums. Fairly old version of A18 though, so I'm not sure if it'll work properly. Biome is a desert: https://www.dropbox.com/s/89tk0jt8vyuw4kk/MothersStreamRuins.zip?dl=0

Waseing, an early-game, extreme desert, perma toxic fallout/climate cycle semi-mountainous colony. Same savefile that I used for a bug report since the actual colony is dead now: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tmsdc6ykffn46bh/HumanMeatBug.zip?dl=0

This might not be considered a big colony, but here you go anyways. This is Tropical Swamp, small hills, 6 pawns and lots of tamed animals. 1 of these saves I set the surrounding area on fire so I can find find rich soil and the other file I am hiding from a manhunter pack.

I'll give it a try. My colony, not as big as some I did, but I was not lucky on the prisoners/refugees roll.
Also, take care of Queen Bee, she is my 14years old Husky, with a permanent bed inside the infirmary. Poor girl has dementia and did a heart attack already.

I give Ludeon Studio permission to use this save any way they want, including using it in a video.

Hello! I have 2 for you (played at various stages of the unstable alpha 18 build). No mods used. It would be an honour if one of my bases was used in the trailer. :D

Physically big base on a temperate mountainous map. 11 colonists: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4qklsx169l3gph9/Safety%20Dancers%20NIGHT.rws?dl=0

Medium base on a temperate swamp. 9 colonists. I had a lot of fun with this one (it was done early on in the unstable build): https://www.dropbox.com/s/z0utewnyp98481j/18s%20NIGHT.rws?dl=0

Submitting the save file and screenshot exclusively for Rim World trailer with consent to free usage by Ludeon Studio:

Save file: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1LZ50Y7f-xVvCLZJ9apD70HoxpJNG2LiU

Since the requirement is Vanilla game and A18 exclusive features, this colony was built in Tropical Swamp. It also contains a Huge River (A17 feat). It would be great to show watchers that there's players who can handle a base without a complete outer wall, no killbox, no mountain hiding (this is small hills). Observe terrain features manipulation like guerrilla tactics, using deep water as walls and shallow waters as passages.

And of course some player love for the video, customized my colony with flooring and illumination so that it is also "cute" at night. My colony contains a bunker to the North-East as alternative defensive structure and only three turrets as last defensive measure.

I don't know how to get the savefile to you.  If this doesn't work, suggest something for me.

This one's 5 seasons deep.
Colony's in the desert, sustaining on two rooms full of hydroponics and rice/hay/trees covering much of the nearby fertilized soil.
about 9 pawns, with the base encompassing an ancient danger place (make a video of the team busting in, maybe?)

Ran through one year on a tribal start to showcase some of the new tribal items on the new Cold Bog biome... which is where I ran into a bit of trouble, because the all thick, photogenic ground cover (grass, moss, creepers) died over the winter and is being slow to regrow. So naturally there was only one thing to do, which was go back to a save from the very start of the colony and godmode everything back into place to show off the biome at the height of its beauty, not as a wasteland. Both versions are attached below.

Major features in both versions: the base is several structures with a partial wall. There's 5 tribals in the redone version, 7 colonists in the one that actually ran all year. The main lodge (south) features the new bedroom furniture as well as the new poker table, and the hoopstone... hoop is just north of it, along with some bedrolls in the prison at the northwest corner. The colonists are wearing a mix of the new tribal head items. There's also a very nice-looking river directly to the right of the colony which runs up through a mountain and several pools.

Sadly it appears combat logs aren't saved to file, which is too bad because Dolly the warg had a great entry involving a deer smirking at her. I guess when you're a warg you can recognize these things. :D

Anyway, I give Ludeon my permission to use these saves in the trailer or in any other way they see fit.

I have a cold bog colony, 50° north, average temp -1°C. Actually the choky vegetation disappears in winter but eventually come back in spring/ summer. In the end there is just a hole in the center of the map (standard size) which doesn't get trees/ grass, but the periphery is almost back to a pristine cold bog. The main difference is about tree, there are no longer these nice groves of trees, but they are more random and less slightly packed:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JrwUOFXn_iii_aReNuu1PfUW7vrP1K_U/

On the other hand, a fully resilient biome is tropical swamp. It can deal easily with poison ships and a toxic fallout. Actually, you've to fight actively against the rainforest to prevent it from eating fields after the harvest. The main reason i built peripheral walls after a few years was not to protect from raiders but from the forest trying to swallow my colony:

Yeah, I saw that it was starting to regrow, but with a slightly bigger than average map and only a 20-day growing season I was worried it wouldn't reach the colony itself. Also, I may have been slightly impatient.  ::)

Your point about tropical swamps is well taken though, I'll probably try one of those next.

Okay, that's a lot of submissions!

I'd like to thank everyone for the uploaded savefiles. We certainly won't be able to fit every colony in the trailer, but now that we have so many colonies it will be much easier for us to choose the best shots.

This means that we don't need any more colonies. Thanks!
