I mean compared to constructing hydroponics basins inside 'overhead mountain' tiles.  Yes you're right, if you have a lot of useful soil and it's where you can actually use it then building "greenouses" is a good tactic.  Tbh I feel that growable soil is too common in the extreme biomes anyway (see MarvinKosh's Hot/Cold Biomes mod).

Hydroponics are the best for growing things fast, but carry the risk of losing your plants so you want to plant quickly growing plants in it. Greenhouses are slower but safer and cheaper. Each method has its pros and cons. And as more events are added into the game, solar flares will most likely get rarer.
