Title: My fiancee's colony
Post by: Talonidir on April 30, 2015, 07:54:27 PM
So my fiancee plays rimworld while I'm at work and she tends to have these HUGE colonies that I can never seem to build up to. (Possibly because I like them small, but whatevs) THIS is her latest creation. (Keep in mind that she plays on extreme difficulty on Randy Random and she has 41 people without losing any so far)

And this is what she has to deal with when cleaning up after a pirate attack

Just looks like shes killboxing, Its a simple way to win the game at any difficulty, but you might as well not kid yourself and play on the lowest, that way your not also getting all the stuff off dead raiders for free this is where most wealth comes from, aside from plasteel mining and High level crafting

So if you wanna get a huge colony just like your fiance, just cheese through the game with a killbox

Challenge him or her to make an actual colony that fights out in the open with weapons not turrets and 1 square hallways, then she will see why pawns go in and out of colonys

While I commend her for building a fantastic base, I just don't like these types of colonies, they seem more like concentration camps than colonies. I also don't like mountainous maps because makes it so easy. On the other map types (especially flat and small hills) it is so much harder because you cant hide behind indestructible rock walls. I challenge your fiance to play on a small hills or flat map on extreme difficulty 8). That aside it is still a major feat to build what she did build.

The thread was about how they got such a big colony, and how he could make his own, I was just pointing out how, i never said to stop, in fact, i told him to use it to catch up with his fiance, all i was saying is a killbox is a insta win, but lots of games have these, DF and the like.

Also was recommending trying it without it for extra challenge and more dead pawns which always leads to more stories

Whether playing through the game with a killbox or without is fun is up to you

I did not say it was a bad base, and if the OP got that intention, I apologize. It is a cool base, I have never built one like that, but that is only because I reach that point where no amount of raiders can breach my defenses and it becomes boring. Playing on one of the less mountainous maps makes that point come far later most of the time.

sweet baby jezus, thats one big colony 0o

I dont get the comment about the kill box (or killing field as I call it) beeing bad... Yes it takes a part of the challenge out of the game but its nigh impossible to stop a few snipers or Scythers from single handedly killing off your colony if you dont use those. I personally got a colony set up in a mountain (like this one) and one out in the open which I just surrounded with a wall made out of rock blocks that I dug up myself. I found the latter ALOT harder to setup. But also alot more rewarding to play :)

Once the wall with the killboxes were setup though the game became alot easier. Not autowin easy but easy enough that you often survive an attack without so much as any serious wounds on your colonists. I tend to build a ship at that stage and fly off, to start a new colony. Tends to take me a few ingame years to reach that point.

I dont recognize the turrets though... Are they a mod? Normal turrets only have 25 tiles of range (IIRC) and because of that arent really OP.... Alot of weapons outrange them hence the walls with killing fields are needed. Their firepower is also quite meh and they tend to explode up in my own face 0o I lose more colonists to my own turrets blowing up then from enemy fire :D

That's an awesome base. Must be a bit tough to manage all those colonists - I'd go insane.

Have you ever played on extreme difficulty? If you have, you would already know that having a low amount of turrets is almost death to your colony. Have you ever seen when tribes people attack? How big the waves they come in are? Yeah, try fighting that horde with 41 people with little to no turrets, see how you do.

I've done it before, and they pretty much either got all my people downed or dead.

And even with these turrets, the tribes people like to get up close because of their melee, and they take out half of my turrets and easily push past them most - if not all - of the time. I do have people fighting, you know.

Ive faced waves of 20-30 tribespeople before I got fed up and made peace with them by setting loose a few prisoners. They completly butcher defenses made up of just turrets alone, you need both turrets and entrenched colonists to beat them back. Well thats been my experience anyway. So I guess its simular to the experience of your financee :)

I do gotta say that building up the colony to be at that point where it is now is probably the biggest challenge in the game. I like that but always feel thats it abit of the shame that the endgame/goal is kinda missing. So I make a ship, get everyone aboard and start anew :D

It's actually pretty simple to defend against tribal hordes.

String out your turrets so the majority of them won't reach your colonists all at once. Try to have as few sniper rifles equipped as you can, prefer automatic/3 burst weapons. Place your brawlers in front of your troops where their melees should reach you. That's it I guess, I'm too lazy to test grenades, molotov or that 3 rocket launcher, but they should also be very good against tribals.

I'm going to test with god mode to be sure, but I'd say with just 6 well placed turrets and no killbox you should be able to take any wave that fits your population count.

You can handle huge waves of tribals without building tons of turrets, but if you'd rather make an unbeatable killbox nobody should look at you funny, it's a sandbox game.

How do you get so many power armours ? some kind of mod? Also, how to deal with Mech drop? Can't see any defend inside the colony.

They drop on your beacon as far as I'm aware, if that happens to be out in the killbox then they'll drop right into it.

You can decide where the drop come from ? :o  So what the point of suprise drop ? :-\

I dunno, if you don't like being able to predict it you can build a bunch of beacons in random places I guess?

I've noticed the raiders/mechas drop inside ur base event is random not just on an exposed trade beacon but anywhere. This has been happening for me since A8-A9 maybe.

and to the OP nice base :D

Regardless of how the game is played, getting such a massive colony on extreme difficulty is quite an achievement. Props to OP's fiancee!

Not always, there's 33% chance they'll drop next to one of your colonists instead.
