Title: Does cover really affect turrets?
Post by: A Friend on July 10, 2015, 03:46:49 AM
Then are these calculations reliable or not?

Enlighten me.

Edit: Here's one with a colonist. Sorry for them being so damn large.

I'm not near any Alpha releases at the moment to experiment, but historically turrets did not benefit from cover. From my own post (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=5223.msg50265#msg50265) a ways back, I don't think tooltips were present for turrets either. Your screenshots show turret tooltips that are calling out cover statistics. Either this is a new feature that escaped me, or it's the result of the mods you're using.

It's not from mods, tried it.

Here's some pics fresh from A11b

Ok, while I was uploading the photos. I tried a bit of testing and yeah... despite those stats, the sandbags did nothing.

-Shooting at the colonist, THE SANDBAGS BLOCKED SOME bullets. Tried 5 times. (By tried, I meant I shot at it.)

-Shooting at the turret, NO SHOTS LANDED AT ALL ON THE SANDBAGS and nearly all fired shots hit the target. Missing only a few times with some bullets landing on the floor to the side or behind it but none on the cover. Tried 5 times.

Well I haven't tested lately, and didn't even notice the tooltips on this. That said, I wouldn't put much stock in where the missed bullets landed as I think the better statistic is whether they hit the target or not. I'm not sure the simulation actually has bullets hitting cover on purpose if the cover contributed to the miss. I was under the impression that all the probabilities just get multiplied together for an overall hit chance for the combat simulation. Hitting the cover or ground etc. would therefore just be random.

I think upwards of 50 to 100 shots would really be necessary to get a proper statistic ensuring the colonist and conditions are the same.

I'd be surprised if the cover didn't work considering these tooltips appear to be new.

sandbags do not effect turrets. I can grab the code if you want to see it, only pawns utilise cover, that tooltip though....could be a bug.

Yeah, unless A11 changed something cover is only taken into account when determining chance to hit a pawn hiding behind it. Otherwise there is no hit chance reduction and no collision on stray fire (that last point means Minigun fire or stray bullets aimed at something directly behind the covered pawn completely ignore any cover too, BTW).
