Title: Reddit or Forum
Post by: RyanRim on July 27, 2018, 01:46:16 PM
So I discovered that the Reddit has become slightly more popular than our forum, and as a rare Reddit user myself, I am quite surprised. In the new layout it does look a bit better than the forum, however it's just for fun threads as far as I've seen (or questions).

I decided to make a little poll  :)

I used to use r/Rimworld, but people there are only really interested in dumb memes and fanart. What's worse is that any time you try to give constructive criticism on a part of the game, your post is downvote bombed. I want to be charitable about the people there, but honestly the majority of those I've dealt with behave like you're attacking their pet game, and any criticism is akin to saying "fuck you for liking Rimworld". Reddit is toxic in general, and r/Rimworld is no different if your post is simply aimed at identifying a problem and offering solutions.

This is why I'm very surprised with the Ludeon forum. People here don't behave at all like the redditors. It's pretty fascinating. Suggesting balancing changes here is 100% more constructive.

Reddit is for the memes.

Forum for game discussion.

The biggest problem with reddit is that it dosen't allow for long discussions on a topic, since every importantant or interesting topic would need to be pinned so everyone can see... and you can only Pin a certain amount before it looking clunky.

I agree, found some nice rw memes, but no serious discussion like in forum. Really weird screenshots have also moved from forum to reddit :o

Reddit is a bit basic but it's ok. Discord is the worst though. Absolutely garbage.

Steam forums are more personally honest since it's at least a third party website.

One nice thing about Reddit is that there is almost always someone around to answer a question in realtime if you need that.  I play in the middle of the night (I'm a second shift factory workers so I basically keep vampire hours) when things can be a bit slow.  Reddit can be good for those "A Thrumbo self-tamed"  That's... good?" moments.

For the record I found that the I couldn't feed the thrumbo at the time so I had to slaughter take it to a farm upstate where it could run around free and happy and away from my damned crops.

I never got into Reddit. I only go there when Google directs me there on a search, and I leave right after.

Haha well, being an avid Discord user but haven't dared to join the RimWorld one. Votes are even now  :P

Off-topic, never in my game history got a self-tamed thrumbo  :'(

I use reddit for multiple games and sections, but when it comes to posting rimmy stuff I do that here because this is where Tynan actively posts and that's who the target of my feedback is for 1.0.

I've always been a forum guy though.  Since the early days before rimworld even existed, so I prefer them over places like reddit.

I also prefer the thread view style more than the upvote/downvote style of display.

I was never interested in them, but I have to admit they have a ton of subjects there. I don't like their new design though.

I did use Reddit up until fairly recently.  There were two reasons for my departure:

The fetishization of game mods, which I find highly annoying.  IMO, Reddit needs a seperate forum to discuss mods.

I've played straight vanilla for my entire time playing RimWorld, and it seems flat-out ridiculous that people mod a game often without really understanding what it is they're modding, and understanding whether a mod changes gameplay.  I feel much the same way when I see mods being developed for 1.0 that I know for a fact change current gameplay balance...when that gameplay balance is still being worked out.

I've seen some REAL bad advice dispensed there.  This forum is far better for serious gameplay Q&A;  the knowledge of the average poster here is noticeably higher.

Reddit is good for the occasional humor, though...but not much else.

This. I know that modders put in a lot of hard work, and you don't just mod a game you hate, but I've heard "there's a mod for that" sooo many times now that it's unbearable. It's a common response to any feedback or criticism I've given in the past. I criticize the title I payed $30 for, not fan-made 3rd-party content.

I have an enormous respect and appreciation for modders who genuinely and thoroughly understand the games they decide to mod.  Ideally, making changes that don't have unintended or unwanted consequences takes that level of understanding, and a great deal of time learning the game mechanics and intended balance.  Some mods that I've seen are absolutely brilliant.

What I don't care for is seeing someone who's never played the game before, and asking...before they've even put in a single hour of gameplay..."What mods are absolutely essential?"...and then getting a bunch of really uninformed responses that can really screw up a newcomer's experience of the game.  I see this happen on Reddit constantly.

The only mods that I consider essential for a newcomer are bugfixes for gamebreaking bugs.  You know...just about every Bethesda game ever made. :)  I've yet to encounter a single one in RimWorld, though...even in 1.0.

To be entirely fair and play devils advocate.... If people are asking for mods, that generally means they find the vanilla gameplay lacking.

For example: myself, i flat-out refuse to play vanilla Rimworld after playing with certain mods. Without Combat Extended, Vegetable Garden, Psychology and Children and Pregnancy..... The game just isnt there. I refuse to play.

As for wether i use this forum or the subreddit.... The r/rimworld subreddit is largely shite. Most threads are memes (largely of the "human skin hats! XD" variety, which get old quick), comics (which are usually good), and the good old reddit circlejerking.

Reddit for fun, forum for work.
