Hello, I have audio issues for the Steam version of Rimworld. This problem is rather bizarre, as Rimworld had normal sounds just earlier in the day. However, now there is nothing no matter what I try. I know this is isolated to the game because other applications and browsers work normally.
Typically when the game boots up, I can hear small click and the menu music starts, but even that is gone now. I've disabled all mods, checked my drivers, made sure Windows 10 was up to date, verified game integrity through steam, restarted my computer, and uninstalled and reinstalled the game. While looking for solutions I stumbled upon this:

Finally got it working :)

Disable sound blaster enhancments checkbox in speaker propities did the trick. Turning them all off in creative control panel did nothing but this seems to have fixed it.

However in my speaker properties there were no tabs for enhancements or any sign of a way to disable one. Another topic I found was on reddit, and a user mentioned they had the same problem, but what stood out to me is that we both had MSI laptops.

Is it possible that the issue is related to MSI, or the drivers MSI uses? If it's of any use, I also use Nahimic 2 audio driver, but looking at the settings gave no obvious solutions.

Any insight would be tremendously helpful, thank you.

Hi,
a little websearch about
"FMOD failed to initialize the output device" from the output_log.txt
give me the hint about the MSI driver.
I just saw at the board that there are a Nahimic 3 driver, which got suggested as solution.

So I took a look at the Nahimic website, and looked at what Nahimic 3 is supported on. Unfortunately my laptop is not on the list, only Nahimic 2 is supported. I did reinstall my Realtek driver and Nahimic 2, the only audio drivers on my laptop, but my problem is still there. I also tried with Nahimic uninstalled but no luck. I'm really lost on what to do now.

Oh, I'd also like to add that I tried switching back to an older release (B18) and the problem persists. I'll leave the output log for this test here as well.

I don't think it is based on Rimworld, since you wrote the sound worked before.

It is more an issue from Windows. That's the only variable which got changed through the patches.
You should search the MSI or Nahimic support about these error msg.
"FMOD failed to initialize the output device, attempting to initialize the null output."
Maybe you find a solution there, or ask there.
Since they know more about their software and Windows with Unity games.

I got it to work! Sorta at least. Sound doesn't work when the output device is set to my speakers, but I tried using my Bluetooth headphones and I have sound again. Little frustrating, but at least I have a way to hear again. No idea why my speakers seem to dislike game audio. Thanks for the help.

Finally, after much fussing around with my system, I finally found a solution. I'll leave it here for anyone who encounters the same problem as I did. After I had updated my drivers, I was messing around with Nahimic audio settings. I realized that it wasn't working properly and not activating at all. I uninstalled it, restarted my computer, and just like that, I had sound and no more Fmod errors in my output log! So for whatever reason, keep an eye out for Nahimic.
