Greetings traveler.
Simple question really: Is the game worth buying now OR am I best waiting until this Greenlit game becomes available on steam?
QuoteWill I get a Steam key?
â€" It depends when you bought the game. If you bought the game on or before November 4, 2014 you will get a key when the game is released on Steam. If you bought the game after that, I can’t promise anything.
I don't want to be stuck with an obsolete game with no way of utilising it with Steam or not being able to update it because all the tools relative to such are integrated as part of the steam client. I'm very much wanting to buy this game but at the same time am very much dubious as to whether it's a good idea.
Many thanks.
Tynan has stated before that when Rimworld eventually gets to steam, updates will become available regardless of where you payed for it (Either here, or on steam) For those who payed for it here, will have it available through the sendowl And through steam for those who payed that way. So no fear of it becoming obsolete regarding payment method.
It's really up to you, you could wait, but there's no given dates at this time; no knowing how long you would be waiting for there.

IF this game goes multiplayer is there going to be an issue between platforms? I'm very much wanting to purchase I just don't want to shoot myself in the foot if steam release is around the corner; which we don't know.
But losing if fun!
;D
no, if you can wait, wait you'll end up with more feature full game and so
but if you're really really really itching for very good single player timesink then you have no excuse not to buy it right now
I'm sure both versions would be compatible, I've seen plenty of games that run perfectly fine between steam/non-steam. It's all a matter of execution.
I'll say this much, never played an alpha this stable before. Sure there are a few hitches here and there but it's in better shape than most betas I've played through steam. Steam alpha's in general will make you paranoid for sure :) They need some serious quality control over there.
If multiplayer is the most important thing to you then you may wanna wait awhile. See how things unfold. That may be a loooong while off yet.
The game is fantastic with mods, but a little lacking on content in the vanilla.
That being said, I've yet to find a more reliable or more active developer than Tynan, and I have full faith that he's going to deliver a truly great game - whether you purchase now or later.
As far as "early access" games go, RimWorld and Prison Architect are the only two out of dozens that I've tried that I can recommend without any reservations.
Well you might as well just buy it now for two reasons:
1. You get to play it more XD and look at all the updates
2. Games generally get more expensive the more updated they are. Take Minecraft as an example.

I know I won't be burned purchasing before the Steam release... Just kind of want it through Steam once it IS steam released. :c So my debate I have is to wait for the Steam release or risk not having the Steam release. The game from all I have seen and admit I have tried an older version a friend gave me... The game is HIGHLY updated and worked on regularly, the MODs are fantastic... the game play is fantastic. I AM going to purchase, however again it comes down to do I wait for the Steam release or risk not getting it through Steam.
The reason for the importance of Steam is for the updates. I have 5 clients I have to deal with getting updates for games through already... I don't want to start needing individual games to add to that list unless I have to. Steam (and Origin now) have an excellent update and verify system from a consumer point, though I've heard it is a headache from the developer side so can understand that being a factor for Tynan along with his desire to have the game more complete and polished not to mention avoid the Steam Trolls that tend to follow and attack Early Access games.
Sendowl is a nice system and easy to download from what I have seen. You simply delete the old install, unzip the new, create a shortcut to the desktop game folder, install updated mods, play. Only it just means now I have a new 'update' I have to monitor and go manually to get.
The future downside of this (and another thing that weighs into the decision) is once the game has been published and released, say 5 years from now. I know the game will still be a fun game to play and well worth playing, however, will Sendowl still support downloading if something goes wrong and a new download is needed? If the email with the download link is gone, how would we recover the download link to retrieve said game? Steam would still have the game in its download archive from my understanding and is simply reinstall the steam client and all your games are available again.
I do understand why Steam has requested that no further 'free keys' be handed out for pre-purchases. They are a business and have overhead as well.
Also, this isn't a help me decide post... more of where I'm at with wanting to going to purchase the game, but torn between two choices and why. I want to play the game with all of its current and future updates, but also want the security and simplicity of Steam for the future of the game ownership. The game is well worth purchasing it early... so hard choice that I'm torn between.
If there was the option in stone for those who purchase now to pay $5 or $10 at Steam release for a Steam key, I'd jump all over that! Not sure if Steam would allow for that however not to mention if there would be a way for Tynan to actually be able to implement such an option. Perhaps by submitting a Steam ID to Tynan so he could in turn submit that to Steam/Valve to activate the option on the Game's Steam Page for a limited time after release?
Maybe you should watch some Rimworld videos and see if that pushes you in one direction or the other.
Personally, I've never had a problem with SendOwl, but a launcher which automatically fetch and install the newest version would be nice. I think that such a thing is being worked on in the background.
I mean yes, you'd miss out on mods released only on the Steam Workshop, but I think most modder would seek to make their mods available in more than one way.

That would be nice, but then I'd have so many 'launchers' and what not it would become cumbersome to keep them all updated and remembering what game is where. I already have 5 or 6 different ones...

In past experience,
most modders tend to take 1 road or another, not multiples. If Steam Workshop becomes available for mods for Rimworld, because of the specifics of how you have to upload and prepare the mod, most modders that use the Workshop will only use the workshop. If it doesn't become available to use Workshops for mods, and kind of silly if it doesn't, then NexusMods would be the likely next choice that starts being looked at by the serious modders (and some are already) as well as direct download. Having too many sources for Mods becomes confusing and often problematic because less experienced game mod users will tend to get a manual install then get the same mod from Steam Workshop that installs differently and crash their games becoming frustrated and blaming the game, not the inexperienced improper install. Simplicity, is key. Granted I won't have this mistake but again, simplicity is key for installing mods and most modders know this.
I'm with Falcongray. I really like what I see (have watched several hours of gameplay), but am hesitant to jump in knowing I won't get a Steam key. That Steam library is a backup in case the current distribution method become's unavailable.
Since keys are no longer included, you're basically hampering any current would be purchasers. I don't understand the business agreements involved with denying additional keys but not making it available on Early Access.
I do understand his hold off at this time. In light of the JUNK and the bad image many Early Access games on Steam have created... This game would be lumped in with those. Combine that with the statistics (numbers you can find if you Google it and look for it) that games released to Steam's Early Access tend to do OK in the Early Access for sales but on release, their sales go into the toilet.
That last part alone if I was a DEV would terrify me away from releasing a game Early Access on Steam and wait for a 'finished' level game to release to Indie Sale on Steam instead of Early Access on Steam. I just wished Steam would make for some way to let the Devs 'sell' their(Steam's) keys early without it being 'Early Access'. I.E. Pre-Order sales that give them access to the game through the Developer site until released on Steam and the Keys for Steam are released. Steam gets their 33% ahead of time and are satisfied with their bottom line. (NOTE: This is not something Steam does or WILL do. I'm just saying it would be NICE if it was possible.) I wish I had learned of this game before November of 2014...
