Post by: Tynan on October 02, 2013, 04:09:04 PM
The Kickstarter is up! With new info on the game, a hot new trailer and proper audio this time. Y'all should definitely check it out.

RimWorld Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tynansylvester/rimworld)

I've also launched the Steam Greenlight. Check it out and (hopefully) vote for us:

Thank you very much Semmy for getting the ball rolling.

I'm just (very rapidly) handling a bunch of interlinking between videos, sites, and profiles. Exciting!

It's a shame there is no lower then $20 tier. I was expecting $10 as a minimum pledge with complete game (no access to alpha/beta). For comparison planetary annihilation was $20 for retail and prison architect is currently on steam for $16.

I'm seeing PA for $30 everywhere it's available, as it always has been.

Besides most steam games are like 20 dollar/euro.
And mostly a 10% discount on pre orders or early acces.

Just checked all the games i Kickstarted and most are 20$ for playable versions.

Why didn't i get a email notifying me about kickstarter!?  >:(
I'm kidding, I check the forums daily and am happy to see the kickstarter is up and running. Also how will people be able to donate through paypal?

I was kinda expecting to get access right away to the current version but i did not know how kickstarter works. Now i will patiently wait till end of kickstarter to get the game, also looking forward to trying out the prototypes you made hehe.

The reason you dont get acces to the game when you pledge is because you can still retake your pledge.
So you would have a free game and tynan nothing.

My understanding is that you get acces to prealpha alpha and release.

When will the game be available?

The game works now. If you're in the influencer tier, you'll get access to the current pre-alpha as soon as the Kickstarter ends.

there ya go tynan's explanation

There's no vote limit; it just puts you in a rank and Valve chooses games in batches every month or so.

I'm not sure you're supposed to show the Greenlight statistics, I thought it was a no-no in the Terms and Conditions you are supposed to read before using that service?

It seems that the campaign works well, as I write this (after my donation, yesterday was too late when I saw that started here) are raised 7.118 CAD, more than 33% of total raise for the project.

Not bad for a first day.

As a suggestion, would go well for in-game advertising, the backer and others were available to artwork, as avatars for facebook, twitter, ... image for your wall on facebook, twitter background, ...

I dont know if you have an artist, but it would be very interesting.

Yes indeed, it goes well! Thanks for the support to y'all.

And yeah, no specific stretch goals. More money just means more art/sound/etc support from other people. I'll be developing the game in modules as planned. I won't do anything to threaten the basic schedule.

Seriously though,  I do applaud your approach to this Tynan.  It's nothing new asking for kickstarter funds but it is quite refreshing that you are sticking to your original plan or vision for the game.  Not like some where they have to just make up extra stretch goals that probably were never meant to be part of the game but they need to justify the extra cash.  Yes! I'm looking at you Star Citizen!  As much as I love the concept of SC I fear the feature creep will cripple it in the long run.

It always seem they are adding essential gameplay elements or ridiculous stuff just to get more money out of the stretchgoals.

Glad to hear it!  In some games, I think stretch goals that add more to the game actually make a lot of sense.  In linear games for example, more can be more.  Here, I think the planned content is already so rich and the balancing and replayability will be what 'makes' the game.

But I do think you should consider something for specific stretch goals.  It definitely helps people spread the word if they can see the real benefit by doing so.  If the money will goto art/sound then you could just give a specific incremental benefit that will be made possible.

Looks like you're going to sail over your target goal, though.  Congrats!

Ah Sorry British, I never meant it to come across as a rant, was just explaining my satisfaction with the way RimWorlds kickstarter is being organised.

Plus congrats to the RW team on the halfway mark.  It must be a great feeling seeing this amount of interest so early in the kickstarter :D

If the Kickstarter is going under 3000CAD a day, it's going to explode! ;)

Man it is going so well, I am impressed and happy. I am sorry to be a bother and probably annoying you, but have you considered more testers before the Kickstarter is done, if it reaches its goal early (and Paypal pledges are going well too)? :s

Edit: By that I mean something similar to the Project Zomboid early access thing, where they released a free test-build for everyone to try, but future updates were only available for backers.

I myself asked the same.
He isnt taking any more testers in atm.
When you get the influencer tier or higher you will get prealpha acces when the kickstarter finishes.
So just a 29 day wait (-;

Congratulations on reaching your first goal 28 days before the end of the campaign!

Still, $20000 is a little step towards the completion of the game. It's enough money to fund a small team for a few months, but there's still a long way. I'm curious about the final amount that Kickstarter will yield, though. I'm not sure if reaching the goal (even a small one like this) that soon is a good or bad thing for the traction the campaign can get. I guess it is why stretch goals exist.

It's a good thing, obviously, because however low the goal was, it's done...
I don't know if that can be a bad thing, ultimately, but now it's up to Tynan to find ways to attract more people, and up to the community at large to talk about RimWorld and spread the word.

That Mercenary Tier is probably going to be a little over crowded by the end of this thing.  To save yourself some work, maybe add some more tiers inbetween 75-500 and put a limit on that one.  I'd imagine trying to handle 150 or so people writing their own stories and traits would be overwhelming.

Just a thought.

As overwhelming as it might be at first, it could also very well end up being easier for Tynan than having to create those backgrounds and traits by himself.
Reviewing them will take some time, but a first pass can be done by the community here.

In the end, the more (N)PC backgrounds, the more diversity in-game, which is always good.

I guess I just disagree :).  I view the designer as more of an artist, and thus, the game as a work of art.  And that is usually a singular vision.

Yeah, I'm thinking more about exactly how to handle this. I think I - maybe with a bit of help - will just have to go through and check the entries. It won't take too long at 90 seconds each. I'm going to write a KS update at some point describing the specific quality standards because I don't want anything weird slipping into the game.

not necessarily. referrer means clickthroughs, and i think that everyone or most who subscribed to the dedicated subreddit would've clicked through from the email update. more likely the clickthroughs came from the posts on other subreddits.

this also means the referrer stats miss out on posters who link the RPS article etc since the clickthrough goes from there. whatever "reddit effect" is always an underestimate.

Tynan.
Thank you very much for getting me to dump another 75$ into your game. I'm a pirate king now
harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr harr
(http://www.crwflags.com/art/miscflags/pirate-pirateking.gif)

For all those that missed it or are paying through paypall.
Here is some new from tynan about a new tier.

In other news, we've just added the Pirate King tier at the $150 level (backers at any lower level, can, of course, increase their pledge to get the Pirate King benefits).

A lot of people have been saying that there was a huge gap between the $75 and $500 tiers. After some consideration, I decided to tie a new reward into a mechanic I've been wanting to put into the game for a long time: the Pirate King.

When larger groups of pirates attack the base, they will be led by a commander that we're calling the Pirate King. This person leads them in battle, and when we get pirate negotiation into the game, the King will be the one making demands or threatening the colony (or maybe even asking forgiveness after a fight gone wrong).

Please note that the Pirate King isn't actually a king in this world; it's our name for the leader of a pirate band.

In combat, the Pirate King will usually have stronger (or perhaps more idiosyncratic) stats than most characters. He'll also be more likely to spawn with an unusual or more powerful weapon (probably something stolen from an advanced civilization).

The Pirate King also creates new ways to fight the raiders. There's an old idea in shooter design (which we referenced a lot when I was working on BioShock Infinite) where you create a group of weaker Grunts led by one strong Elite. The names are references to the excellent use of these archetypes in Halo.

The Grunt/Elite design is interesting because it's tougher to kill the Elite first, but if you do, all the Grunts flee. This gives the player a choice between a lower-risk strategy of taking out the Grunts one by one before confronting their boss alone, and a higher-risk strategy of trying to snipe the Elite.

In RimWorld, the role of the Elite will be filled by the Pirate King. In the current build, pirates flee if they take heavy losses across their whole group. Now, their morale will be badly weakened if the Pirate King is defeated. This loss alone may cause them to flee.

Pirate Kings will naturally be tough to capture, but will also be quite hard to recruit. We've already got a system for varying recruitment difficulty in the game to handle this. It'll take a warden with a lot of social skill, some time, and some luck to recruit one of these guys. But if you do, you'll have gained a powerful ally.

Not every raider group will include a Pirate King. Sometimes, you just get assaulted by disorganized bands of drifters. But when a strong, organized attack comes, you'll usually be able to count on a Pirate King among the attackers.

Note that the delivery date on this guy is set for January. I think I can make him sooner than that, but I want to make sure there's time to get him working right. Obviously you'll get the game on time with everyone else.

A quick question. When it says in the reward text "Includes all lower tiers", does that mean that a pirate king also creates a mercenary, pirate, etc, V-down the list for the game?

I'm considering upgrading to Designer or at the least pirate king and have already established a bond with my fictional mercenary lol.

You only get one character at any tier - the difference is in who your character is.

So a pirate king only creates one Pirate King, then one mercenary, etc. or a Pirate King only creates on character?

I think a pirate king creates a pirate king only.

Cool, I'll remain a mercenary.

Modified: Actually... what's the role of a mercenary in the game? I'm not 100% on that atm. Is it like a stronger lone raider (similar to an assassin)? A leader of a raid but not a Pirate King? Or just a stronger raider that arrives with a group?

Since it seems you like to quote yourself, I'll spice it up and quote myself answering you asking the exact same question elsewhere, it's magic ! ::) ;)

"If you are referring to the KS tiers names, they are just that: names.
For the time being, the NPCs that attack are only known as "raiders".
The "Pirate King" tier's description actually mentions a pirate leader (mini-boss-like), but it's probably not a final name, nor is it in the game right now.

This will most likely evolve when Tynan develop factions.

Now, now, no-one likes a smart-aleck  ;)

That wasn't what I meant, if the title mercenary is currently part of the rewards system distinct from pirate then I need to find out that distinction, the names are placeholders at the moment but the underlying rank whether it's theory or in-game is reality and reiterating my question since I've been mocked twice now for quoting myself lol:

What is the difference between pirates and mercenaries? The Pirate King distinction has already been explained as you've mentioned.

As said already, they are merely tier names for KickStarter.
That's what people do when they put up a KS campaign.
Tynan could have named them "The tier of fear", "Tier 1", or even "Tier 1 Hah !", but that'd be too far.

PayPal is around 6-7k.

As for the tiers, just to clarify:

If you take Pirate tier you get to put a name in the game.
If you take Merc tier you get to put a name and stats and a background into the game. This creates a character who can spawn as one of many different roles.
If you take PK you do the same as Merc, but the character spawns as a Pirate King.
Designer rewards and beyond are on top of the PK reward.

Also, the character from Mercenary tier doesn't have to be a Mercenary. It can be any type except a Pirate King. Could be a trader, traveler, refugee, pirate, drifter, and so on.

...I'm not quite sure how to respond to that. Lol it's do-able according to my limited knowledge of the game's coding I've been able to infer/deduct so far, but whether it's healthy to enable your twisted fantasies or not is the real matter.
