I think the game could greatly benefit from having actual melee combat added.
My idea would be to combine the addition of powerful fallout style melee weapons, such as the Ripper, the Power Fist or the Super Sledge (something in the line, not them exactly obviously), with Dune's shielding.

In Dune, you can't use standard ranged weapons while your shield is on, the shields stops anything coming in or out at high speeds. Now, I don't want something as radical as in the books, were firing a lasgun at a shield user would trigger a giant explosion, let's just keep the melee only part.

With the right values on the amount of shield and damage of these weapons, it could become a great addition to the game. I think brawlers should thrive on skirmishes and small scale fights, but have trouble in big, open battles were they might drop before even hitting anyone.
I don't think the implementation of the melee weapons would be something really hard, as there's already a melee system were you interrupt people trying to shoot and what not, it would need art and animations + some number crunching. Shielding on the other hand would be a new mechanic and probably require extra dev time I guess? Still all in all I think its a feasible suggestion.

I'd like to see some more melee too - make guns a little more rare.
Maybe things like lasos or bolas to capture / incap people. Swords, or even basic cudgels to give combat advantages

Hell yeah! Warhammer 8)
Probably one of the most badass melee weapons in the history of gaming

TBH it would actually be viable to have melee weapons as the game is right now if not for the m24, the R4 and maybe the M16.
I don't really now if my version of melee combat can even somewhat fit in the games lore, so the solution might be having modes were weapons are rare indeed.

Chainsaws are awesome too, but combined with a big sword =win
sure, and as i suggested before melee should have a better chance of incapacitating them with a lethal/nonlethal attack mode, or if they stun someone, they could cuff them and drag them away without accidentally killing them.
REALLY wanna see some cool sci-fi melee weapons. Imagine taking out a raider assault with nothing but a bunch of space ninjas. It would be cool if we could get some rarer weapons that were both melee and ranged, too.
Nets, stun guns, bolos, all those would be fun, too. I want to be able to incap a muffalo and then perform diabolical experiments on it, or to capture raiders en masse to sell as slaves.
Personally, I am anti-cool. Chainswords and Power Fists put me off of a game. More interesting and useful melee combat would be a plus, though. I bet that a good pit brawler could probably take out most non melee specialists, but since everybody walks at a snail's pace no matter the situation it's very difficult to use them effectively in a firefight (in my experience).
