Title: Vents - Open/Close

I think the ability to open and close vents would be a nice improvement.  I'm building a vent to outside in my food storage room during the winter, then replacing it with a wall in the summer.

Completely agree.

I'd ask for temperature controlled vents too, but I'd likely be pushing it.

And yeah, rodents breaking into vents to steal crap and chew on conduits does sounds pretty awesome.

By the way... who think the Vents should merge flawlessly with the walls and be made of the same material ?

Yes, +1. We should be able to open vents, especially that we have confirmation after confirmation that we won't have any xenomorphs in the game.

There's a mod that already does that (opening/closing and temperature controlled vents), along with vented doors, industrial heaters/coolers and air duct infrastructure - https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=11056.0
Integrating said functionality into vanilla thus doesn't seem awfully hard.

EDIT: ..as a matter of fact, I think I read somewhere that it's in the plans. ;)

No, most certainly not!

A 'cooler', in RimWorld terms, uses electrical power (a lot of it) to expel heat from a room using some form of coolant (I'm assuming refrigeration cycle, but it could be free cooling, evaporation, etc), probably coupled with a fan or two, for extremely powerful heat exchange even when the temperature outdoors is higher than indoors. Think an air conditioning unit.

A temperature controlled vent uses natural convection to expel heat only in certain conditions - by opening when the temperature outdoors is lower than indoors and closing otherwise. Uses very little power, if any. Think an adjustable external air baffle in a passive ventilation system.

EDIT: Once again, I suggest you take a look at the RedistHeat mod (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=11056.0) - everything being asked for in this thread (and more) had already been implemented there.
