Title: The Beginning of Touchscreen Support
Post by: AJsarge on October 05, 2013, 07:26:34 PM
I know I heard plans of maybe, possibly, a snowball's chance in hell, of having the game ported to iOS on the iPad.  Before we get there, are there plans to implement simple touch screen support?

For example: being able to move the screen with your finger, which I think is regarded similarly to the scroll wheel, or selecting what mouse button controls what so that holding LMB drags the screen while tapping it selects an object.

I haven't seen anything on the control setup so I might be behind the times.

I doubt that adding touchscreen to the pc version would be worth the time or effort.

Besides it would be smarter to port to Android as you have way more users to buy the game.

android has the biggest userbase and is most likely more friendly to port too than icrap.

maybe tynan should port it to the indie xbox one or ps3

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Porting to consoles costs a ridiculous amount of money and time, I think that it's best to focus on the pc version for the next year or so before porting is considered.

If porting even happens in the future, it's going to be a while before it even happens.  The port was supposed to be a tie-in comment, not the point of the thread.

Again, are the controls set up to be compatable with touch controls?  Once I get access to the alpha through the kickstarter, I'll have a chance to do testing, but until then all I can do is ask.

Easier to develop on iOS. You have standardized devices and only so many.

Android is more difficult since you have so many form factors and device versions. A lot of apps work fine on one device and not at all on another.

Anyways, a lot of the controls currently would be compatible with touchscreen. As of right now there isnt really any hover commands except for descriptions of certain things, but that can easily be turned into a mention when touched.

I just had a quick poke into RimWorld with my windows 8 tablet. There's good news and bad news for touch screen/stylus support.

- The menu interface is well designed for using an inaccurate finger
- Zoom with the pinch/spread technique is fantastic, probably not intentionally (see point 4)
- In-game requires accuracy and hover options that you don't get with fingers
-- This can be worked around with a "poke to place, poke again to confirm" setting for touch users
- (Biggest issue) - You can't move your view with touch support (area select when I tried) or stylus alone (architect menu on right click) without having to move the cursor to the edge of the screen or use a keyboard
-- A temporary fix might be to add optional direction arrows to the game screen that emulate arrow keys on the keyboard

I developed on both and believe me porting to android will be much easier. I don't know how much unity supports the porting to Ios when you buy the expansion, but Ios needs objective c as a programming language and objective c is just a silly, silly language.
It's an apple language in basically everything, meaning it does a whole lot of stuff different to other programming languages, just for the sake of doing stuff different. so pretty difficult to port to.

I for one dont care about a port to either iOS or Android. I rather have a pc version as good as it can be without limitation in design to consider other platforms....

And I dont know where the obsession comes from to have everything ported to a mobile device? Can anybody enlighten me?

Anyhow if you want to play on the go why just play it on a Laptop, last time I checked there are portable, read mobile, devices as well :D

I won't be giving this a moments thought until we have a game complete to Tynan's original vision.
