As title, I have dreams of my colonists sitting around relaxing while the animals haul everything around, making cleanup after fights much easier. The problem is that I've discovered that only a few animals can haul, but don't have enough time to go around experimenting to find out which ones can and where they an be found. Does anyone else happen to know?
Largish dogs usually are a safe bet. Labrador Retrievers, Husky's and I think Wargs. I do believe Elephants can also haul, and Thrumbo's though I've never had one, but the legends say they're smart enough, and they certainly are large enough
Any animal with advanced intelligence can be trained to haul. Just check their stats.

Small Yorkshire have an advanced intelligence but can't haul because they're too small. Same goes for monkey if I'm not mistaken.
Labrador Retriever, Husky, Pig, Warg for sure. Elephants have 300 carrying capacity, but are sloow. Wild boars probably can too, because pigs can.
You can find a single husky or warg (peaceful) roaming the map sometimes. A good bet is bulk goods trader, and if they DO carry hauling animals they tend to have several.
Wargs from manhunter packs can be tamed, but put a few bullets in them first just to be safe. Choose the downed ones with least serious wounds, tame them, rescue them, feed them the meat of their fallen brothers.
Elephants come in packs and are hard to tame, but you stand a good chance that one will self-tame if they're on the map. If you have spare food, you can place a 1x1 Important stockpile near animals you want to tame, and they won't leave due to hunger.

I do not think that this is true. IMO yorkshire can haul, but the ammount of hauled stuff is just gonna be small (22 or something like that).
P.S.: Never tested though. Just guessing.

I started the game with a yorkshire terrier, and he couldn't haul. Animals that have less than required intelligence still have carrying capacity listed in their stats. But the doggie died pretty soon, maybe it can grow up and become bigger ?
Thanks for all the good answers just a quick secondary question, does anyone know where I can find these animals? Do elephants appear in the jungle or plains or both? The wiki doesn't really have any information on this.
I don't see why small animals shouldn't be able to haul (with reduced carrying capacity, which is already in A12). Rescuing can be locked for small animals, sure, as long as there are no small colonists (i.e. children) an animal can be too small to pick up any colonist, but I don't think that should apply to hauling.
Also, it means advanced intelligence is completely useless on small animals, I think.
If you can't find an animal where you are, you might be able to buy it from a trader eventually.

They'd be able to haul big stones, power armor, assault rifles, etc.
The game has no notion of a 'large volume single item' for now. That's why.
News flash, Wild Boars can't haul! Their intelligence is merely Intermediate, which is strange as they're pretty much the same as pigs.

New alpha, new sentence to add to my list.

I thought you were right when you posted that... but after seeing a husky hauling an elephant corpse, I don't agree anymore. It would be even more amusing to see a terrier hauling an elephant corpse, so it should be in the game for that reason alone. :D

wargs - yes. hard to train though.
thrumbos too but they are way to wild to be trained. 3% with 20 animal handling

Have a handler at almost 20 handling now, looks like it is time for him to shine, once the legendary thumbro shows up.
Also, elephants can show up in trade ships, that is how I got mine, just make sure to have a large stock of hay and a small pen for them if you want them to breed, it seems to take about a year and a half for a pregnancy to happen and reach late stages.
Haven't had any luck with breeding a megascarab yet though, id like for them to be able to breed faster since they are well... a scarab.
Also, it looks like when the animals are babies they can't be trained to haul, they have to reach juvenile stage before that which also takes about a full in game year even for the wargs, who seem to have a fairly fast pregnancy period compared to all the other animals.
Woot, wild boars can haul now in alpha12c, which make them my favorite pets. Breed fast, grow up fast and can haul stuff. Damage of 9 isnt half bad either, lvl 20 handler has 50% chance to train and their leather is very good for fireproof coats, as good as synthread regarding the heat protection.

Nice!
But their carrying capacity is only 53. So while they're quite common, labradors and huskies are easier to train, and carry more. I don't remember what carrying capacity of a pig is, only that they're more sensitive to cold.
b0rsuk, I am pretty sure they can...
So I though i'd get myself pigs since they make for good lifestock with the reproduction thinking they'd also not bond, and well they're nowhere as diligent as dogs it appears. It would be cool if animals like that had their hauling level cap reduced to reflect them being lazy and lard asses. Basically I belief that dogs are more likely to move about and not concern themselves with eating food which means you'd want the dogs/chicks rather than pigs hoping they'd haul stuff and make for food.
