Title: Researching
Post by: mofful on January 14, 2014, 04:05:22 AM
The idea is that when a character starts researching a project, stacks of research papers start piling up. You would be able to place these papers onto shelves. If you didn't use the technology you research for X amount of days, you'd lose the knowledge of that technology. You can then use the research papers again to regain the ability to use said technology again.

It's a terrible, terrible idea. Having to research something multiple times for no added benefit is a busywork and a drag, slowing game down for no apparent reason and giving nothing in return.

Can't see no obvious way it could improve the gameplay.

The point of it is exactly that it is a drag. It just adds a simple challenge to the game. This is similar to the saying, "Out of sight, out of mind." If you don't have it, what is the point of knowing how to get it. Also, when you begin to research something for a 2nd time, you might gain a permanent boost for that item. For example, an upgraded turret research for a second time might do +1 damage. Have an open mind.

I wouldn't exactly call that a challenge as the player (from what I understand) isn't involved. It just slows the research down..

Besides, if you have hidden benefits to researching things twice people will be frustrated when they don't get the bonus they wanted..

Drag is not a challenge. Drag is something people do, when they fail miserably at pacing and need to fix it, but don't know how. I would rather see a good pacing.

The only way I'd support this, is if when you went to re-research it, the thing would be far better than the first one you researched.

ie: You research Hydroponic Tables. You don't use that research for a while, and end up forgetting it. When you go to re-research it, you figure out ways of making it better, so that it say, doesn't require Light to operate (ie They can grow in complete darkness at the same rate as fully Bright)
