I can't find the research for it, and it's not in "power."

You still need to research it. Need to research microelectronics first and then build a hi-tech research bench first though.
Geothermal power is now a high-end research, you won't be able to get it for quite some time. In the meantime, you have to rely on wood-fired or renewable power.

Yeah, I've got to admit I had the same reaction.
You need a high tech research bench for it, and I spent time trying to research things I thought would unlock this research bench, missing the fact it was available from the start (why it's available from the start, is beyond me).
Chances are it's buried, and you missed the fact you have the wrong bench to do it regardless :)
