I'd really like to understand the decision to not carry over the quality and number of features from Prepare Carefully into the Scenario Editor. This main feature of alpha14 is very rough with a confusing UI, tiny tiny print, and a number of valued features, like customizing starting characters, absent. To me, because of the clunky layout, with screen filling windows fighting to get every detail on the screen instead of using simple scrolling lists, its almost unusable. And yet you had a long development cycle and a clear model to use that the consumers were comfortable with. What was the think here that I am missing?
Well, prepare carefully is a mod, I am sure you realize, and not part of the base game. So without that mod.. all versions have the random colonists. As to the starting scenarios. It's basically 1st is normal start... 2nd is Solo start.. and 3rd is for a group of tribes people.
I am not sure what you mean by the UI being tiny.. it looks exactly the same to me as other recent versions.
Personally i do not see the point. I find it is fun to start with random colonists and deal with thinks they can not do well or other problems they might have.

Same, I pick 2 main skills for each colonist and roll the dice until there's flames next to both. I never spend more than a couple minutes there.
I can understand why people would want more control though, if they're creating colonists based on friends and such.
