Title: Why is milk a vegetable?
Post by: CannibarRechter on August 08, 2016, 08:43:42 AM
See subject. This must be intentional. So is there a game balance reason?

My best guess is that because fine and lavish meals both require a measure of meat and a measure of vegetable ingredients. That way, milk and meat could be used to make a fine meal.

So, game balance?

Perhaps, as most vegetarians are ovo-lacto (eat milk and eggs), milk was better served in the veg category, rather than the meat?

Technically it's not listed as a vegetable but as "vegetarian" which again is technically correct. The blanket term "vegetarian diet" includes milk and eggs, but not actual meat. Vegetarians who don't eat eggs or drink milk are often refered to as vegans even though this is technically incorrect, as vegans abstain from all animal-based foods and products, not just milk and eggs.

Potatoes + milk = mashed potatoes

Steak + milk =... http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Milk-Steak-With-Jelly-Beans

That seems gross, I don't want to eat that.

Technically, milk is a class of "PlantFoodRawBase" with the thingCategory "PlantFoodRaw".

"Technically."

Anyway, I find the situation a bit odd. I guess if you have cows or muffalos, you have a meat and vegetable source at the same time. Perhaps its because of the investment required for the farm animals.

Why would anyone do that to a steak? That's horrible.

When I say listed, I mean in the stockpile tab in the game. Not so much in the actual code for the game.

True, but this could go the other way: milk and vegetables could make a fine meal.

That sounds stupid, I guess.

Thing is, I've been playing around with making cheese usable in meals, and I've been debating the merits of making it a meat substitute instead of vegetable substitute. I suppose I could just split the difference, and have milk be one way, and cheese the other....

Or Tynan could decide and throw in a Dairy section of food, with milk, cheese, yogurt and the like.

Just for the lolz... and then add a "lactose intolerant" trait to our colonists

Scientifically Milk is meat.  Explanation, meat contain amino acids that vegetables do not have and humans do not produce. That why there can be no vegan children. If children do not get this amino acids there development suffer. Adults can be vegans as they are fully develop and can get small amount they need from bacteria in there stomach.

Just to be clear, we are talking about breast milk (mmm human milk) right? Lots of children don't/can't drink animal milk and they develop just fine.

In my opinion, until new food classes are added, the decision to place milk into its current category was a balance decision to limit the meat products vs. plant products for upper cooking levels.

I'm quite sure, in later development, this classification of milk will change. For now, it simply is what it is and is in my opinion an balance decision.
