ok so i bought the game a long time ago and i currently have version 8f and 15c both on my computer. It appears that the older version was registered. Was this supposed to happen?
wut? steam will always be the last release which at this point in Alpha 15c. If you bought the game prior to the steam release you will still get your sendowl link to download the latest version. Im unsure what your issue actually is?
ok, i bought the game a couple of years ago and i already had version 8 on my laptop. I hadn't played in a long time and wanted to play again recently. So I downloaded 15 and installed it. So now I have version 8 and version 15 installed on my computer. I went to register the game with steam and it seems to have registered the version 8. Also, it didn't really "register" it either. It just added it to my "Non-Steam" list. Anyway when i start the game from steam now, it starts the version 8, not 15.
The only way to "register" a game purchased outside of steam is with a code, RimWorld has never offered that. You either got the DRM free version, which in no way deals with steam, or the version purchased through steam, which is automatically added to your account on purchase, there is no code involved.
Your "registering" that you are doing is just adding a non steam game to steam to be in your library and to launch. You will have to remove the old install of the game fully by finding the folder for version 8 and deleting it, or moving it.
Nolan youre wrong most if not all people who bought the DRM free version got a free steam key:

That part, at least, is correct. Steam lets you register non-Steam games, which essentially gives you a glorified shortcut within your Library to something you already own. I haven't done that myself, but I think Nolan is correct about removing it from Steam (and deleting the old version if you want to).
Ok, I think I am understanding now. I did use a link provided in this forum to "register" it, I,ll look into the link provided here to confirm if it leads to the same link. Is there any reason why I can't have a DRM free version, and a steam version at the same time? Just wondering...
I really don't want to delete the old version at this time. Any suggestions as to where i might move it to? Do I need to move it completely off my computer or perhaps a specific folder would do the trick?
The Steam version will be downloaded to the SteamApps directory, and will (by default) automatically update to the latest stable build.
The DRM-free version can be downloaded from the SendOwl link you were provided when you bought the game, and anew copy of the link will be sent to you with each major stable release build.
(Next will be A16.)
The DRM-free and Steam versions can both be used on your computer, and can both be installed at the same time.
You can even simply name each "installed" DRM-free version of the game in sequence by naming the folder you place them at with the version.
(EX: RimWorldA8, RimWorldA15, RimWorldA16, and so on.)
It was been suggested by some that people should save a copy of the newly-downloaded archive of each version of the SendOwl DRM-free copy of the game to a backup folder on their computer, so that they may revert to an old version, or
but i never got a key. How do i get a key? the link i followed only put the game on my non-steam list. I was a little confused but the more i read, the more i think i should have gotten a key, since i have had the game for over two years now. Am I wrong? Or will I need to purchase a second copy from Steam to enjoy the perks that come with the steam version?
I'm sorry if it seems obvious to you guys, but my research is leaving me with conflicting information. The Blog indicates that steam keys are available if i also want the steam version, but some of you guys seem to be saying that I can't do that.
The link for the keys is in a forum post that says keys are available, but the link provided did not provide a key. No explanations for the difference in information just do this and now you can start the game from steam, nothing more regarding keys. What am i missing?
ok so i went to the store page and it now says i have the game in my library. Not sure why the version 8 went to my non-steam game, and i never got a key persay. I think i have the problem resolved now though. I have my steam settings set to not show the games i don't have installed so it didn't show up anywhere on my library. Just for future reference for anybody else running into this issue, Just go to the store page and it will confirm you have it. you can download it from there.
I'm glad you've got it now.
Just be aware that by default they'll both use the same save folder and you may start getting warning messages when switching versions. You can give each game its own save folder if you like. See the post by skullywag in this thread: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=16751.0
yeah i saw that was happening, couldn't play last night. I will check the thread, thanx :)
Edit: This will allow me to be able to play the steam version and sendowl versions seperately from each other, right?
ugh! now i can't get the sendowl one to install without the steam api. can i delete that? and are there other elements i need to delete with it? I'm trying to install it in another part of my drive with a different filename so i can keep my saves from the sendowl version before i let steam wipe them out.
The Steam API file will be included with the SendOwl version, yes, though it is not actually used by the SendOwl version.
I do not know if the file can be deleted, though it is safe to ignore it.
Just start the RimWorld executable directly.
ok looks like i got it worked out
thanx for all your help :)
Glad we all could help.
Enjoy your time with the digital suffering!
