Title: A list of suggested medical conditions
Post by: YCFCj on February 06, 2017, 09:15:17 AM
Hello!
Bought this game A16 and really enjoying it. I've played about 40 hours and I think its tremendous.

I really really like the health system and the diseases. However I feel it could be utilised more. Apart from malaria and infection I rarely get ill pawns (and its nearly always asthma. The only other one i've experience was one person dropped dead with an extreme heart attack - id be interested to known more about this). I couldn't find a list anywhere please ignore me if any of these are already in it...

1. Chronic lung disease
Acquired - hereditary (pwn has it), by smoking too much leaf, by doing lots of mining
Effect - Prone to lung infections. Reduced movement. High need for rest.
course - very slowly progressive
Cure - Only lung transplant

2. Kidney stones
Acquired - randomly. This would be "silent" until revealed with "obstructed kidney stone (seperate disease)"
Effect - predisposition to urine infection. Occaisionally Obstructs. If obstructed pawn is in excrutiating pain. Will usually pass without treatment but occaisionally will be prolonged and cause kidney injury.
Course - asymptommatic the majoirty of the time, not progressive.
Cure - with transplant if ever needed.

3.Allergy
Acquired - Either "silent" or known but pawn has for life.
Effect - allergic substance e.g's rice, yayo causing anaphylaixs when eaten/taken. Requires emergency healthcare, very short time to death. However once treated is entirely well. Will then avoid this substance unless forced/completely starved/mental breaks etc.
Course - non-progressive. lifelong.
cure - none

4. Arrythmia
Acquired - Predisposed to develop if have had a heart attack, smokes leaf, or alcoholic.
Effect - similar to allergy in that suddenly pawn very ill requires immediate attention, however once tx is assymptommatic.
Course - non-progressive
Cure - heart transplant. Could have "install pacemaker" operation as well.

5. Stomach ulcer.
acquired - prone in alcoholics, liver cirrhosis, people who have had previous.
effect - pawn starts vomiting blood. Varying degrees of severity. May self resolve may require emergency treatment is severe/extreme due to blood loss.
Course - one off event.
Cure - as with blood loss, normal medicine (you could make more complex and have "endoscopy" operation)

Other notes on medicine in rimworld-
Could we have antibiotics? it seems strange to not have it in an advanced age. some thing like "penocillin" that stops/reduces the % of infection. People with multiple doses could get superbugs "Penocillin resistant infection"

I'd go with more logical common ones like tooth decay etc.

Root canals with a 5 medicine doctor is going to be FUN

I'm sitting here laughing at the idea of a pawn with seasonal allergies, stopping their work (drop whatever they're hauling) to sneeze and leaving snot filth all over the place :P

I like how you organized your thoughts, by the way. Very clean, imo.

I agree with the idea of antibiotics, and actually made a small mod that just allows people to ingest base-game medicine. It ups the rate of immunity gain, and helps quite a bit. I'm not sure how keen I am on antibiotic resistant strains, though. RimWorld disease is scary enough as it is. Nobody ever just gets the common cold. It's always something silly dangerous like the Plague or Sleeping Sickness.

Hey thanks for the responses.

Lightzy - I did pick the most common medical conditions but obviously thats in a modern western world. Theres room for dentistry and probably more tropical disease like dengue fever etc.

O neg - haha yea O probably shoud've put "anaphylaxis"

Nuss -Cheers!
