Title: The active Kickstarter projects discussion thread.
Post by: LobsterSundew on October 21, 2013, 02:50:23 PM
Welcome, this is a thread about discussing crowdfunding news and projects on Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/discover/recently-launched) and IndieGoGo (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects?filter_quick=new).

Seen a great looking project just launch? Have you recently backed a campaign and want to talk about it? Is there a project in its last hours that needs help because it is almost at its goal? Post about it here.

Thanks LobsterSundew for the thread! :)

I would like everybody that love dogs to have a look at this project (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/keepitclean/bravery-loyalty-goods)

I love trekking, camping and mountaineering, and I would love to do all these activities with my next dog (most likely a Malamute). This project is a new design for a dog harness. Please let me know what are your thoughts on this kickstarter project.

These discussion threads appear in many forums for kickstarted games. It reduces the mess of having a different thread for each noteworthy Kickstarter campaign that launches and this type of thread becomes a small part of the ecosystem for how future campaigns get some early exposure.

An action sidescroller that launched today was Viktor (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1064508483/viktor-action-platformer). The demo shows off an interesting dash mechanic that works through solid objects in the environment. I also like the spider boss and the animations overall.

Another recent project with a demo and interesting looking bossfight is the ARPG Unsworn (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1215133794/unsworn). The art assets are making good use of the low polygon count since the game is targeting Android devices as well as PC, Mac and Linux.

Except for it's 3D-ness there are similarities in the open world and exploration aspects.
...with an emphasis on physics-based gameplay and puzzles.

There's a playable alpha / demo, too.

Just $1,500 more in the next 12 hours for Cornerstone to reach its goal. I've been confident it would since the October 22nd surge (http://imgur.com/ZkJ4j34) in new backers.

Some big news is that the SEC wants to create new crowdfunding regulations (http://www.forbes.com/sites/deborahljacobs/2013/10/23/sec-proposes-crowdfunding-rules/). Don't panic when you see how strict some of the regulations are because the announcement is more about equity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equity_%28finance%29) crowdfunding which is not what Kickstarter currently does.

FORCED has finally been released on Steam. That was a Kickstarter campaign I backed with a special underdog story (http://imgur.com/gallery/yacucU1) behind it.

Confederate Express (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/829559023/confederate-express) is a permadeath game about delivering packages during a zombie outbreak. The sprites are well done and one of its features is a special lighting system.

Dropsy (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jaytholen/dropsy/) has relaunched. If you like surreal adventure games then take a look. The original campaign in 2011 was the 4th project I ever backed through Kickstarter. The second campaign almost made 50% of its goal. It is an example of how a rebooted campaign can get a big surge in momentum on the first day when backers return.

Another interesting adventure game is Night in the Woods (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1307515311/night-in-the-woods). I enjoyed the music in the project's video and the animation also looks very good.

A 3D action adventure game called The Girl and the Robot (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2039811773/the-girl-and-the-robot) launched today. I think it has very impressive art and 3D action adventure isn't a common genre to see on Kickstarter. If you like Ghibli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_Ghibli) films then take a look. I remember it from Screenshot Saturday #133 (http://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/1kzdzh/screenshot_saturday_133_if_only_i_could_be_so/cbuam9q).

Viktor looks really cool, reminds me a lot of the good old Abuse. Really like the look of Unsworn too, definitely gonna get the demo when i'm home.

Too much interesting indie games  :-\
It's a good thing, for my wallet, that i have no credit card.

Browsing Kickstarter i came across Dwarven Delve. A puzzle/action game.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/205899120/dwarven-delve-an-action-dungeon-crawl-with-a-twist (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/205899120/dwarven-delve-an-action-dungeon-crawl-with-a-twist)
Looks interesting. Solving puzzles is fun and dwarves are awesome :)
Title: Shameless Plug
Post by: AspenShadow on November 01, 2013, 04:52:22 PM
I'll preface by saying I really don't usually do this sort of stuff, even Rimworld backing was a carefully measured decision, but this project (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1319089374/dinosaur-battlegrounds) has my full support and with only 5 days left to go $2500 left it could REALLY use some support.

Done with my shameless plug, hoping to spread it across the web,
AspenShadow signing out.

There is a 2D stealth game called Paradise Lost: First Contact (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1183462809/paradise-lost-first-contact) with players controling an alien plant-like lifeform. I like the details put into its pixel art.

Sam Sweetmilk (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/samsweetmilk/sam-sweetmilk-animated-sci-fi-comedy) has relaunched. It is a sci-fi animated comedy that already has a voiced animatic for the first episode that I found funny. Kevin McNally (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_McNally) voices the robot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8FU011cjKs

The first Sam Sweetmilk campaign was mentioned by Frederator (A studio known for Adventure Time) which also has its own Kickstarter campaign running called Bee and PuppyCat (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/frederator/bee-and-puppycat-the-series).

For news there is the 5,000,000 backers milestone (http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/five-million-backers) achieved for Kickstarter.

Sci-fi/horror game STASIS (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bischoff/stasis-2d-isometric-scifi-horror-adventure-game) feels like one of the highest potential campaigns of 2013. It evokes both a strong atmosphere and a sense of nostalgia for classic isometric PC games. A playable demo is also out.

A fun looking Contra-like game with 2D physics and co-op multiplayer is Bullet Bros (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1022212678/bullet-bros). Good music samples and the level graphics are also impressive with good parallax effects.

How about The Mandate? http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1964463742/the-mandate

They need a little help in reaching their target. Looks like it may have good potential and its a type of game ive been looking forward to a long time (since the first xcom) yet no ones ever made one.
Title: Re: The active Kickstarter projects discussion thread.
Post by: GC13 on November 04, 2013, 05:41:06 PM
Yeah, I've been eagerly watching The Mandate. I really hope they get funded, but I have a sneaking suspicion they have a fallback plan. They've put too much work into it to just pack up and go home.

Think Confederate express should be getting more attention, sadly the developers seem to be lacking the motive to advertise their game more (youtubers maybe?), they could really take some tips from Rimworld

Stasis does look good.

Bloom (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1376061185/bloom-memories-a-new-kind-of-action-adventure-rpg?ref=category) is looking pretty cool too. Love the concept art and the visual of the gameplay.

Another one looking funky but not sure what to think of it is Dyscourse (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/owlchemylabs/dyscourse-survivors-choose-wisely?ref=category).
Title: Re: The active Kickstarter projects discussion thread.
Post by: LobsterSundew on November 14, 2013, 01:34:41 AM
Dyscourse is an interesting campaign.

Bloom was on season 2 of The Next Game Boss (http://ca.ign.com/wikis/next-game-boss/Bloom%3A_Memories). I watched that season because the kickstarted 2.5D platformer Spate (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/379113968/spate) was competing.

Project Sen (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cakemachinegames/project-sen) is a 2D metroidvania with artists that helped on the fighting game Skullgirls (http://skullgirls.com/). It still has less than 300 backers.

A 2D sci-fi sandbox space game is Interstellaria (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coldricegames/interstellaria). It also has exploration of the surface of worlds.

Dropsy (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jaytholen/dropsy) is in its last 8 hours. It was recently picked up by the publisher of Hotline Miami (http://hotlinemiami.com/) that has announced it will assist with QA, marketing and localization (http://www.devolverdigital.com/blog/view/devolver-digital-and-dropsy-to-conquer-your-fear-of). It is rare that a publisher picks up a crowdfunded game because a lot of projects coming to Kickstarter weren't able to get publisher interest or wanted complete control of the development. Three projects that did get publishers in the past were DiveKick (http://www.divekick.com/), Cloudberry Kingdom (http://www.pwnee.com/) and Final Element (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh76zkM2nSI).

A physics-based car combat game called Scraps (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nition/scraps-customisable-vehicle-combat-for-windows-mac) looks fun.

LISA the painful RPG (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/131274701/lisa-the-painful-rpg) is a 2D survival game that looks very unique and has a demo. It is set in a wasteland without women ruled by bizarre male characters. Player choices can determine if the main character loses body parts or loses allies which impacts the party.

Tiny Trek (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2064021040/tiny-trek) is a small space game with a very retro colour palette.

The folks behind Stasis (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bischoff/stasis-2d-isometric-scifi-horror-adventure-game) released a alpha demo! It's quite good.
The start has a Myst-ish feel. Waking up in a foreign place, having to find out where you are and what happened. The graphics and sound effects create a great eerie atmosphere and the story starts of nice and vague.

LISA looks a bit weird. I like weird, definitely gonna grab the demo when i get home.
QuoteLisa is a side-scrolling PC ONLY RPG set in a post apocalyptic wasteland where women are nowhere to be found. It's a world full of drugs, violence and the decay of human intelligence...
Sounds like a great game. And the midi-music, oh the joy. :)
You can even get a character with a line of text haha

Scraps defintely looks fun too. The video is hilarious :)
Gonna keep an eye on this one.

Dyscourse was able to make it. There was a decent surge in new backers (http://imgur.com/e45Yjvc) on December 4th.

Stasis and LISA are past 100%. I am not sure about Scraps reaching its goal.

A platforming collect-a-thon game called Lobodestroyo (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lefthanded/lobodestroyo-3d-action-platformer-game) is trying to get funded with 4 days remaining to raise $10,593.

Festival of Magic (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/171497873/festival-of-magic) is a 3D RPG that looks like a lot of effort went into it. If you like JRPGs then take a look. The visuals are good.

Sewer Rats (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/133786429/sewer-rats) is a campaign with only 4 backers so far. I like the 1930s-inspired style to the 3D models. You play as a cartoon character fighting giant bosses.

After November 26th there was a lot of slowdown in the performance of many campaigns. This late in the year is not an easy time to run a Kickstarter campaign.

In Kickstarter news Torment: Tides of Numenera is now turn-based (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/12/09/the-most-funded-kickstarter-game-torment-is-now-turn-based/) instead of real-time combat after there was a vote (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/torment-tides-of-numenera/posts/686723).

Projects with runtimes into January are now starting to launch. More days in length can hopefully compensate for December slowdown by picking up momentum after Christmas.

New Orbit (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/467671205/new-orbit) is a spaceship game with a 3D cockpit and a ship construction system that launched two days ago.

War of Omens (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1564141972/war-of-omens-a-digital-deck-builder-ccg-hybrid) is a digital CCG that is inspired by deck-building games like Dominion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_(card_game)). This game and Hearthstone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearthstone:_Heroes_of_Warcraft) are the two CCGs I plan to play in 2014.

Novus AEterno (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2122031929/novus-aeterno-the-next-evolution-in-rts-games) has relaunched its sci-fi MMO RTS project today. It has shown a lot of improvement since the first campaign. The 3D bridge and ships warping in sequence visually look very good.

There has been some drama with the community manager for Mighty No. 9 (http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/12/mighty_no_9_studio_comcept_facing_fan_backlash_over_community_manager_appointment). Meanwhile there is a MegaMan board game (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1821440755/mega-mantm-the-board-game?ref=category) getting crowdfunded.

A 3D survival horror game called Long Night (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1102758921/long-night) only has 34 backers so far and it has been live since December 11th. There is a demo.

Project Nimbus (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kissltd/project-nimbus) is a 3D mecha combat game. I like its presentation, but it is a bit of an odd campaign with the reward tiers spanning just £1 to £25 and it was posted to the overall Games category rather than the Video Games section.

Fight The Dragon (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/740762193/fight-the-dragon-a-mini-action-rpg-construction-ki) looks like a fun action RPG that has a dungeon construction feature.

I like your chronicles, LobsterSundew :)
Thank you. There hasn't been much for me to chronicle for the Video Games category over Christmas.

If you like 2D top-down Zelda games then Midora (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1867607597/midora) is a project that you might want to download the demo for. If you look at the Kicktraq data (http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/1867607597/midora/#chart-daily) you can see this campaign had a very slow start.

Another game with a demo is James Journey of Existence (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1618944138/james-journey-of-existence-a-hand-drawn-animated-3). The project itself is a bit rough, but the game's blend of 2D visuals and a 3D environment is interesting.

There were some interesting Film projects launching.

If you enjoyed Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_Cry_3:_Blood_Dragon) then you might enjoy the 80s flavoured film Kung Fury (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kungfury/kung-fury). The trailer starts at 00:30 in the pitch video.

Legend of Grimrock The Series (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/waysidecreations/legend-of-grimrock-the-series) is an adaptation of the dungeon crawler it is named after (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_Grimrock).

In the news the Veronica Mars movie (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/559914737/the-veronica-mars-movie-project) that raised $5.7 million released its theatrical trailer.

There were new filters added for sorting projects in the Discover section. Being able to look at the Recently Launched page filtered by category was a feature I remember people were asking for back in 2011.

It is the middle of January and now notable projects are starting to launch.

Project Rain World (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rain-world/project-rain-world) is a unique looking game with strong art where you play as a creature called a slugcat trying to survive in the ruins of a civilization while being hunted by other creatures.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1588672538/pantheon-rise-of-the-fallen) is from game designer Brad McQuaid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_McQuaid). The project's presentation could have been more refined.

Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/482445197/unsung-story-tale-of-the-guardians) is a tactics RPG with people behind Final Fantasy Tactics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Tactics) involved. It too is a project with the names of famous game developers attached, but is lacking in information about the game itself.

For news, both The Banner Saga (http://kotaku.com/the-banner-saga-isnt-just-a-pretty-face-1500844642) and Broken Age (http://www.polygon.com/2014/1/13/5305556/broken-age-release-steam-early-access) are now sending out keys to backers. This is important in the history of Kickstarter as Double Fine Adventure (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doublefine/double-fine-adventure) is considered the campaign that introduced many gamers to the existence of Kickstarter so there are high expectations.

Kickstarter also posted a slideshow for 2013 (http://www.kickstarter.com/year/2013/) in case you haven't seen it yet.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1294225970/kingdom-come-deliverance) is a 3D Cryengine first-person RPG with a medieval setting. It is approaching £450,000 in pledges and also approaching 15,000 backers.

Cradle (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1324765189/cradle) is also using Cryengine to make an open-world game.

Olympia Rising (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paleozoic/olympia-rising) is an action platformer with a demo.

La-mulana 2 (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/playism/la-mulana-2) is a sequel to a 2005 game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La-Mulana).

To The Death (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/scarymostro/to-the-death) is a beat'en up that looks fun. A $400,000 looks difficult for its campaign.

Savage: The Shard of Gosen (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/561467528/savage-the-shard-of-gosen) is a small campaign for a platformer RPG. If you liked Tiny Barbarian (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/359201373/tiny-barbarian-dx) or Volgarr (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1829034266/volgarr-the-viking) then consider taking a look.

For news, a Super Troopers 2 (http://screenrant.com/super-troopers-2-kickstarter-budget/) movie might get crowdfunded.

There was a post to /r/IndieGaming (http://www.reddit.com/r/IndieGaming/comments/1uhaia/2014_kickstarters_heres_whats_coming_up/) listing some upcoming campaigns like Path of Shadows (http://thepathofshadows.com/).

Darkest Dungeon (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1460250988/darkest-dungeon-by-red-hook-studios) is a roguelike RPG project that had a very strong launch. It already has more than 1,000 backers and day 1 isn't over yet.

FRAMED (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1257999391/framed-indie-aaa-action-shooter) is an ambitious game that feels a bit like Heavy Rain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_Rain).

Classroom Aquatic (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2094628033/classroom-aquatic) is a game where you play as an exchange student trying to cheat on a test by looking at other student's answers. The other students happen to be dolphins.

39 Days to Mars (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/philipbuchanan/39-days-to-mars) is a co-op steampunk adventure game working on stretch goals.

Catapult for Hire (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tyronehenrie/catapult-for-hire) is a Nintendo64-inspired game where you utilize a teleporting catapult and a variety of payloads to navigate levels. The gameplay example around the 3 minute mark in the pitch is interesting.

There hasn't been much Kickstarter-related news this month.

A Minecraft film (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/878782324/birth-of-man-a-minecraft-feature-film) has been cancelled after raising $63,980. Notch tweeted (https://twitter.com/notch/status/431795020082216960) that the project creator had not made a deal with them in advance of the launch.

Galactic Princess (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/19027642/galactic-princess) is about captaining a smuggler spaceship. It makes fun of Star Wars and other pieces of popular culture.

StarCrawlers (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/125859261/starcrawlers) is a first-person dungeon crawler that is also in a sci-fi setting.

Heart&Slash (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1597522957/heartandslash) is a character action game with a robot that reminds me of the one in FLCL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLCL).

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kingartgames/the-book-of-unwritten-tales-2) is a sequel fans of adventure games should take a look at.

A strange story is the campaign to buy a chicken burrito (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1613730240/graphing-the-deliciousness-of-a-chicken-burrito). It had a $8 goal and is now over 200 backers pledging more than $700.

The start of March means new projects launching.

Spirit (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/holdenboyles/spirit) is a hard to describe game that has a demo.

Ashen Rift (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1763303301/ashen-rift-a-man-and-his-dog) is a 3D survival horror game about a man with a gun and his dog.

The UnEarth Initiative (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/898315486/the-unearth-initiative-a-quirky-space-colonization) is another sci-fi colony management game.

Toby's Island (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1126972722/tobys-island) is a town-building 2D RPG with some good looking environment art.

Red Goddess (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/yanimstudio/red-goddess) is a colourful 2.5D platformer.

There is a 2D beat'em up called Axe Princess (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1846467163/axe-princess).

If you have an Oculus Rift there is the horror game Spectre (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1260566890/spectre-virtual-reality-horror) to take a look at.

For news, Kickstarter was hacked last month (https://www.kickstarter.com/blog/important-kickstarter-security-notice) and today it celebrated $1 billion pledged (https://www.kickstarter.com/1billion). There was also some drama (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/02/28/kickstarter-fail-john-campbell-burns-comics-rather-than-sending-them-to-donors/) around a comic book campaign having a portion of the rewards combusted.

Proven Lands (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thesetales/proven-lands) is a sci-fi game that launched today. Like RimWorld, it too is a story about surviving after crashlanding on a planet. It has procedural generation with an AI storyteller as well.

Duelyst (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/keithlee/duelyst) is a game with squad-based combat and some strong art assests. It started out prototyped as a tabletop game.

For news, Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/shaq-fu-a-legend-reborn) is a campaign to make a sequel to Shaq Fu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaq_Fu) and a campaign for Epoch: Returns (http://www.destructoid.com/former-mass-effect-dev-goes-indie-for-epoch-return-271507.phtml) (From a former Bioware dev who worked on Mass Effect) has been announced.
