Title: General building ideas
Post by: Vilhelm on November 03, 2013, 12:56:46 PM
Hi,

I am the type of person who is not a huge fan of constant and unrelenting waves of killer pirates (although I do love pirates) So I enjoy the collection of materials and the construction of a colony.

I have come up with a few suggestions, and I would love to get some feedback on them.

1 - Building stamps - I like to have all my bed quarters looking the same, so a building stamp system would be wonderful, or perhaps to "remember" certain layouts of research/comms/equipment rooms.

2 - Different graphics - So, have different options for walls, brick walls, metal plate walls, mud walls, that kind of thing. Perhaps give them slightly different properties.

3 - Comfort items - Perhaps adding some other items like CD players, games consoles or table tennis. So every now and again if a colonist is close to a break down, tell them to go to this room filled with lovely things and let him chill for a while to save him from going bonkers. Or of course, boost the morale of the rest of the colonists.

4 - Lit walls - I like the idea of being able to place lamps, but to have a wall section that can act as a lamp, perhaps make this a research item. I would like to have lit rooms but not take up space with a lamp.

5 - Skill training area - So shooting ranges, punch bags, study area, so the colonists can increase their skills. Perhaps have a reduced effectiveness as it is only training, the best training is always in the field.

6 - Rubble - I like how the rubble slows down colonists and pirates, but it does take up a lot of space, maybe allow it to be stack-able to save space.

7 - Defense walls - Maybe maybe a wall that colonists can poke their guns through and kill pirates, like a WWII pillbox bunker design. The wall should provide great cover, but at a great metal cost. This would be good to help preserve the highly skilled fighters/colonists.

Well that sums it up for now, but I am sure I will think if a few more things to add/change in the future.....by no means is this criticism of the developers work, as this is a bloody brilliant game in the making, totally support you all the way.

Cheers,

Will

My opinion on this ideas:

1. I like this. Maybe if you saved it as walls but set the stamp inside a mountain, it would automatically set the area to be dug out first?
2. This one is fun too. Maybe you could cycle through them by, say, clicking on 'walls' multiple times until the one you wanted was there.
3. Once again, a good idea.
4. I don't know about this, having every wall essentially be a light would use a LOT of electricity. Maybe just like ceiling lights or something.
5. Again, I like it.
6. I think the idea of rubble is that you have to move around to keep raiders from using it as cover. Although it would be cool if you could stack two on top of each other to save space, but it would work as full cover.
7. I like this one, but it seems like it would basically make you invincible; just get a bunch of metals, cover your outside with these defense walls and you're good forever.

Well, number 4, it would kinda work the same as normal walls but - a right click on the icon - and it is a wall lamp. Uses the same power as a normal light so you would still need to plan it the same way as placing lamps and things.

And 7, It would be more of an upgrade, really tough expensive walls but essentially not invincible. Eventually with enough shooting, the wall would break.....again to even this ut, it would cost a looooaad of metal to build, like 30 metal per 1x1 block?

Instead of a 'light wall' , why not just have a wall mounted lamp?

Re 7 - Once the defenders are cleared (molotovs?). Defensive walls/openings could also be a weak point that raiders could chip away at to gain entrance into the colony.

I think a fabrication building that lets you build equipment would be great
