Title: Steam workshop downloads not supported
Post by: Azzinoth on March 06, 2020, 11:20:30 AM
Hi,

I have the game on gog. Some mods are only available on the steam workshop, but in the past I was at least able do download them using sites like https://steamworkshopdownloader.io/ and install them manually. But now it tells me "download unsupported by game". Since this works fine for other games apparently some setting has been changed to specifically disallow this. Is it intentional that gog users can't download all mods for this game?

You still should be able to manualy install mods like the regular DRM-free user like me.
Download the mod and unzip/move it to the Mods folder of the installation.

GoG don't support a special mod service like the steam workshop.

That is not the question. Some mods are only avaiable to download on steam workshop and nowhere else. The question is why is the workshop for this game configured to forbid manual downloads.

Because steam want to bind the player at their platform.
Same reason why ludeon is allowed to give out free steam keys if they sold it over their website.

Not sure about the downloader you used at the past.
I use
http://steamworkshop.download/
and worked fine so far.

No, there is a setting for each game to change that. For example you can download all mods for Don't Starve with the downloader I posted, but you can't download any mod for Rimworld. That setting can be changed by the developers/steam. So I'm asking why this setting has been changed for Rimworld, since in the past it worked.

That downloader doesn't actually work either, it only downloads old backups that they still have saved on their website from when you still could download rimworld mods. Because of that the mods you download there are all outdated.

I've never seen this service before. In any case, we didn't change any setting related to it (nor am I aware of any such settings existing).

On further prompting and investigation, it turns out that there is a setting for this. Seems like Steam added it at some point and it defaulted to off. I've enabled it.

Thank you very much! I can confirm that it works now.

As far as I can see (and tried) this downloads only mod initial version, not latest.

Thanks tile7 for finding this topic i allready searched for it ! :-)
Yes, i notice this too lately.
As Tynan mention that he found the settings about it, i could download the latest builds.
But currently it is back like before, geting old versions, not the latest anymore.
Tynan could you please check if the settings backed off ?

No problem. I stumbled on it.
RimPy does the same (initial version), and

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1084452457

shows last version and correct file size, but, again.. initial version only (maybe not initial but certainly not latest).

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1084452457

Now this thing downloaded much larger file, but don't know if its the latest version...
File timestamp is created on download not on upload or however it gets on steam.
Or MOD author doesn't know that he has a new version.

https://steamworkshopdownloader.io/

This works. Just tried a few mods and got latest version.
Either that or Tynan is very fast.

I think Tynan was fast.

It seems that the settings have been reverted. Workshop downloader states that the game is not supported...

Try to use
https://steamworkshopdownloader.io/
or maybe try SteamCMD (RimPy got some support for that but i didn't test it yet)
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD

My latest expierence with
http://steamworkshop.download/
are bad so i can't recommend it anymore.

https://steamworkshopdownloader.io/ Didn't work like an hour ago, maybe their client was borked or something... All good now.

Yep, but then you should get an error msg. that tells you to retry it in a bit.

It only stated the game is not supported... haven't had that one since Tynan enabled the service.
Glad it works now.
