I normally name mine otaku tako town. Because i love anime and tacos. Simple as that.
My most common naming theme has been to just name it after the first three
Vladtuiophelium for instance =P After Vladimir, Tui and Ophelia
on the occasion when I actually forget one of the names at the time you have to name the thing I go with something like Cragfort
or something similar, depending on where I've started to build the colony
My current one's called Uptodaterton because of the wiki was being updated atm
If I could, I'd rename the place lagtown or Lagsabunchandsome
Could you send me a screen shot?
After a lot of playthroughs, I simply don't care anymore and go with the suggested name.
Usually a crash-related name with some influence from the landscape. The last one was named Crater Creek.
You can change your colony name using the dev tools, by the way.
I name mine based on the cardinal direction of the colony. So things little Northwest, South, Southeast, etc. Colonies in the center of the map are named Cardinal.
I usually name them something like 'Marefort' 'Dise' 'Maripony' for colonies that are mostly outside, and 'Vault #' or 'Stable #' for colonies that are mostly inside.
mine usually follows a theme of hope like 'Bastion' or 'Sanctity' but I also name them after the surroundings and my neighbours like 'Crossfire' if I'm between warring tribes or pirates. I might also go for '______ Coast', '_______ Hills' or '_______ Mountains'. mood also sways the naming conventions
EDIT: @Rainbowlicious I get that reference and I might have to consider that as well.
Always name my colony Hadley's Hope.
Rimmingtown as I am a child.
Crash 'n' Burn. Simple enough and quite accurately describes the history of a colony:
1. We Crashed
2. We did some crap 'n' stuff.
3. Pirates burned our stuff down.
I also like Known Space-esque colony names like Werealive or Wemadeit.
'Whiskey Outpost'
Probably a bad idea to name it that from the start...
I would name my colonies "I am gonna break your legsville" but this name is too long, so I just go with the suggested one.
I usually name mine after the asshole who suggests naming it unless I think of something better, like if the colonists all have some backstory in common or if I did a naming theme with my colonists.
I usually name it after places from my favourite video games such as Dragonfall or Nosgoth.
When I don't see the colony going anywhere I name it Fort Kickass after the Archer series.
My last colonie was "Mystery Lake" as there was a lake that was half into the mountain and a reference to a indie game named The long dark.
There was also "The pond" wink at doctor who
It generaly inspired by local geographie and/or a reference to game/movie/book/etc. that i like
My most common name is "Shakespeare," from the Ender book series. Just has a nice ring to it.
I usually like to go with 'Drifters Sanctuary' for most standard cases. But if I feel like making a walled in tight security base designed to withstand assault for decades to come then I'll name it 'The Keep of Titanium'. But if I have full intent on going straight for starship then I will probably name it 'Citlalique' (It's the Aztec goddess of the stars according to google). Past names I've used include; Yulkia, The Damascus Plate, Amarath, Dome, Atrium, etc. If I think of a good name usually I'll make a colony for it.
I usually just put "ton" or "ington" on the end of the suggested name.
I tend to name it after whichever of my starting colonists I've grown most attached to. "______'s Peak" or "_____ston" or something.
I like to name it "Militia Outpost" Or anything around that, Gives me a bit of story to work with as i like to imagine my colonists are from a Military organisation taking territory from the tribals + pirates.
Usually Pheonix and then it's designation in Roman numerals.
I'm currently on Pheonix XLIV For instance.
Although when I get a bunch of bad asses it sometimes changes to "Bastion Hyperion" or "Hellsing Manor"
One time when I was using a few of the mechanoid mods I named the colony 'Deus ex machina'
It's interesting to see what and why everyone names their colonies, that's for sure.
usually if I build it into the side of a mountain, I give it a Dwarven flair, if i'm stuck with names New (places that already exist) like New Tokyo or New New York, my last one was New Sparta :D
I tend to name my colonies after elements. Neon, cobalt, zinc...
Gravetown....cause that is what it well end up to be :).
my fave name is "Mos Eisley".. 'coz most of my colonists are criminals.
Landing...
Cause, you know.... SciFi originality and all...

Same. I was using names from like Grand Theft Auto. Los Santos survived for quite awhile.
But as I've become lazy on naming.

Ahahhahahaha!
Ohhh, I'm dying...
I tend to go with musical names- I have make DavidBowie's Package, Jungle Boogie, Blue Moon, Hot Chocolate, and James Brownville in the past.
I go with color, shape, etc + jima. Kiirojima, Akaijima, Kurojima, Hirobajima, etc.
I always name it "Fort Kickass"
I usually give them the very first name that comes into my mind, which can be very odd sometimes.
My personal favourite would be "Irony at the Hills". Sometimes I try to make the name fit to a strategy I have in mind, e.g. the first colony I build massive stone walls on was named "Fort Stonecutter". My zombie apocalypse colonies are always named "Woodbury", because I'm a huge Walking Dead fanboy *.*
Innsmouth usually.
Because great Cthulhu who lies dreaming in R'lyeh demands it!

Last Stop
I name mine R.O.V.(whatever vertion of base..) It stands for Rimolony V (base num) I thought of rimolony because its rim and colony, together :D
My current jungle colony is Junglepalooza. I pretty much just type whatever comes into my head, really.
Roanoke or Trash
Silent Hill.
