Title: Best hydroponic setups?
Post by: Tumuel on September 29, 2014, 03:27:46 PM
I have my own design for a hydroponics farm that I basically use in every colony I make, it is a 9*9 room with a sun lamp in the very centre, and 12 hydroponic basins around it.

As far as I know from looking in other places on the forum, nobody else has come up with the same idea, so if anyone else has a good design, I would like to see them.
You might do similar things with other buildings, like setting up bedrooms the same in every colony, so why not post them too?

here Is the most efficient hydroponics set-up. It fits 18 under one lamp

Oh wow, that IS a very efficient setup! I hope you don't mind me borrowing it for my own colonies. :P

It takes up a lot of space, but the pillars and extra amount of food with only one Lamp taking up energy, is pretty good.

Just to specify, this is not my design. I found it here.

That is a good setup. Cant wait to try it IG.

Now only if we could grow marijuana and become a stoner colony. Hahaha.

Keep in mind that the most compact designs often make your colonists waste time by making them go the long way around. It might not seem like much, but with the speed hydroponics grow crops, it can waste a lot of time that could be spent on other duties.

i suggest to "lineup" lamps + 16 spots with free access to each spot, due to growning mechanics, there is absolutely no reason to try fitting everything under single lamp.

Someone posted their "best" set-up with 16 and someone edited to show you can do 18. I personally do the 18 and love it.

Adding the two extra in the middle is infact less efficient because you need two rows bigger rooms or lots of doors tho even then you still end up with a maze of dead ends that ruin all routing efficiency of your seeders and haulers.

The original layout just rules and your colony would rather starve from haulers and seeders routing inefficiency than from having 2 less hydroponics basins per sun lamp because seeding and harvesting much faster will excell production more than having 8 more planting spots.

With a hydroponics setup, you can afford some inefficiency in the placement for maximum growing area because you should have a finished floor underneath giving a speed boost.

A bigger source of inefficiency is poor resource storage planning. In particular, food prep is a movement intensive process for minimal gains with not inconsiderable resource costs.

A noticed a very nice mod that adds odd-sized tables which might help here: https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=6670.0 (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=6670.0). Heck, I would say it does not hamper balance in any way and would be a good candidate for inclusion in vanilla Rimworld.

One of the mods included with TTM have hydroponics that can be annoying to build but have no collision, colonists can walk over them. And with them available in 1x1, 1x2, 1x3 and 2x2 sizes, you can fill literally every tile of a sun lamp's influence with these things.

Walk on hydroponics seems a little unreal. Also it spoils the fun trying to build a well working layout.

Don't think of it as walking on the hydroponics, it's more like stepping over the hydroponics. I would think this could be illustrated by slowing the movement speed while walking on hydroponics tiles. I haven't actually played that mod myself though so I don't know if that is done or not.

I've always done a 9x9 room as well, and built the lamp in the centre with twelve units surrounding, with the following setup. It seems to have a very quick navigation layout which is handy for getting my colonists around.

Thanks,
EBrown

So, on the rimworld wiki, you can actually fit 24 hydroponics under a lamp... http://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Hydroponics_basin

Game have changed over the years, and so have the most optimal set-up.

In earlier versions, it was extremely slow for colonists to walk trough a hydroponics basin. That is why those 4 years old screen shots got open spaces in between for walking.

The most efficient hydroponic setup is in the desert. You can place hydroponic tables outside with impunity. They only stop working in the summer, when there are too many heat waves. But even then you can build roof and activate coolers if you REALLY want constant farming. Sunlamp optional.
