Title: [Mod Request] Harvest organs from dead
Post by: Hrolgar on October 03, 2014, 01:31:50 PM
Hello, the subject title says it all. Was wondering if there is a way to make a mod or a easy "fix" to harvest the organs of dead friends or enemies.
Of course with some kind of timer, that you can only harvest within so many hours before the organs become rotten.

I don't think you should be able to take organs from the dead but when your taking out vital organs like the hart or both lungs they shouldn't just die on you just go in shock to give you time to take all the other organs out

I like Hrolgar's idea but I beleive that the body should be less than 0.2 days dead to give you a little bit of time before they are too far gone to harvest their organs. Or perhaps you should be able to have a surgery, perhaps putting the body on ice? To give you a full day or two to extract the organs.

almost exactly what pollgg12 said. a 'shock' phase where the patient doesn't die immediately but suffers from massive bloodloss and overall body failure after removal of vital organs.

I get around it by harvesting one kidney, one side of the lung and then the heart most times. 3 organs from one body! woo!

I hope we get the chance to harvest our fallen to heal our sick / dying colonists.   Such a waste!

I tried this already but apparently you cant access the healthtracker of a dead pawn. I think the Pawn is deregistered on death and remains to be a Corpse "Thing". You could make a recipe which uses Corpses as ingredient and organs as products but this will lead to shenanigans like removing organs twice: 1st by operation 2nd by applying the recipe. After all it IS possible to do but you would have to write an all new handler which stores the healthtracker of a Pawn somewhere but the efford for that wouldnt match the benefit.

Is it possible to add a 'loot' script to dead corpses?  The loot being organs.  We know what organs are pawns have as they are all humans - then only have loot available for pawns incase it ties in with animals.  I'm thinking maybe get the organs via an addition to the 'strip pawn' command?  It would be crude but perhaps a step in the right direction.  Not sure if we can have the looting only do-able via a medical bed.  Wild stab in the dark there! lol

I'd love the idea. In the real world people can be organ donors, so it'd be great for that to be an option should one of your colonists kick the bucket. Since you can track injuries, have some parts not be available if too damaged, that'd be realistic.

Slightly related, it'd also be nice if we could harvest from prisoners. With no anesthetic for the bastards...

If it is hard coded...then why not make a recipe you can call "Gut Em" Basically a euthanize order, but it returns all the organs from the once living victim.  That way people can get their organs and not have to spend much in Medicine.  One operation...just with a scoop and not a scalpel.

That's actually the best idea I've seen so far. I like this one.

When I put someone under the knife I just want to be able to do all the operations in a row while under the first dose of anesthetic, instead of 3.

I could imagine this would be a quick slice and grab operation leading to damaged organs and whatnot upon removal, reducing overall effectiveness when transplanted or sold. pro and con

I know its an old topic, just wanted to state that you pretty much can't harvest organs from a dead person in the real world. They pretty much have to die in a hospital bed and the organs have to be removed right away, essentially kept alive after the person dies. If the body dies, the organs die with it.

Not entirely accurate actually, there's been many organ donors that have died in car wrecks and such that still had viable organs once the cadaver reached a near by hospital. The window is relatively short, but the major organs will remain viable for around 30 minutes in the body before they need to be extracted and put on ice to await the donor recipient.
