Title: The Ability to Self-Administrate Medicine
Post by: Aided on October 10, 2014, 03:38:18 AM
Three games now have my colonists been attacked by things and only down to one colonist, then he/she gets wounded and lacks the ability to properly treat him/herself, eventually dying of infection or starving to death on the medicine bed.

+1 this. Going down to one colonist shouldn't be a death sentence.

I would say that there should be a chance that a single colonist could heal themselves, but that it should be much more difficult than if a separate colonist is available to treat them.  I.e., no chance of an actual "good" rated self-treatment, regardless of the doctoring skill of the sole survivor, and probably some chance of a complete failure to treat some of their injuries at all.  Having only one colonist left and having them get wounded should continue to have a substantial chance of being unrecoverable, I think.  (Did you ever see the movie "Cast Away"?  That movie made it quite obvious how much danger a lone survivor could be in if they got injured, even if the injury isn't severe.)

I may not be able to completely heal myself, but at least wrap myself up so I don't die of blood loss.

That assumes that you, as the sole remaining colonist, are always going to be completely alert, thinking straight and able to maneuver around successfully with gauze and whatnot, even while you're in severe pain and bleeding out.  I'd say that a colonist having such capabilities in that situation is not a given, not at all.  A chance to successfully stop blood loss, yes ... but also a chance they will fail.

I think that that ability would be dependant on whether the character is incapped or not. If they are able to keep working, then they are able to wrap themselves up.
