I love tycoon type games, and recently got addicted to Prison Architect . Someone on the Steam forums brought this game up....i checked it out and WOW it looks so fun
My question is does it get stale fast? I dont usually buy alphas but PA and this game look so good (and PA has enough meat on it to really feel likes its worth it) - are you all generally happy with it? Even after long hours? Please let me know
The dev seems like a really cool guys too so thats a plus- Between him and the PA devs and the Project Zomboid devs- im really happy to be a gamer right now lol
While all the critical content is here already, the game is missing some flesh on its bones so to speak. That said, each update brings tons of new content, and the robust modding scene adds a lot of replayability to the game. If you watch a let's play of the game, and can't stop thinking about how much you want to play it, just pick it up now. It's only going to get so much better from here.
Worth every penny my friend! :D
With the constant stream of updates this game receives you can never really get bored. If you do though you could always mod it (although i never mod myself).
I'm the type that gets bored of games very easily, and thus I rarely finish games. Rimworld however is one of the few games that I've ended up putting several hundred hours into, it seems to have managed to capture that same essence that made me addicted to Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft and Terraria. I usually end up playing one or several colonies for several days for each update - except A4 and A5 because I was too busy with summer duties unfortunately.
It's also worth pointing out that the game is made by a very talented developer that also have a professional background, as a result the game doesn't really feel like an alpha and you are guaranteed to have few bug related frustrations compared to other early access games.
The same as ShadowTani wrote, I too tend to get bored quickly with some games nor do I own a lot. I seek out the gems, therefore I tend to be quite critical about my purchases.
This game caught my attention since alpha 4 and bought it this week.
Assuming direct control or let it flow, can make the colony or break it.
Like in Dwarf fortress, losing = fun.
Although I only played like 4 or 5 hours, I already regret nothing.
It's lacking a little bit of fleshing out and polish here and there but there's already enough on it to play for hours on end if you're into this sort of game, and as a sum-of-its-parts product, it's pretty brilliant so far.
It's also pretty challenging overall if you don't resort to cheap AI abuse like killboxes or play it roguelike style without reloading after a disaster.
I think you should just buy the game. Each play through in each biome brings different challenges, each play through will have different resources available, and the modes will make the game either a Warhammer 40K brutal last stand, or a peacefull top down of minecraft.
Plenty of content for people to sift through, and discover. As well as different base layouts to tryout. All in all I'd recommend you to get the game.
thanks for the reply guys! i will buy it tonight....30$ is a nice chunk of money for little ol me so i really need to vet the games i get to make sure i get my moneys worth =)
can anyone tell me how often the dev updates the game? Is this his main project or does he just put part time work into it. THe guy seems really cool so i trust him (even after the tim schafer mess) - but i just want to know what kinda update schedule we are working with
PS- is there a good tutorial ?
also- is this game really flying under the radar or was i not looking hard enough? I used to play (tried to) dwarf fortress, gnomoria , etc and i have never heard this game get mentioned
it looks awesome so im kind of confused why there is no PR!
It's under the radar atm, if you ask me.
And that's not necessarily bad. A lot of people dismiss games entirely on the premise of having tried an incomplete build that rubbed them the wrong way. As long as it's got a large enough community with active modders and it's financially sustainable, there's no reason to rush. The more time to add systems and flesh things out the better when you actually release and blow everyone out of the water.

Yeah, I am the same way. I don't pirate games so I think three times before I buy something. Most of the games I end up buying are the ones that offer unlimited replayability (think Crusader Kings, Don't Starve, Mount & Blade).
RimWorld is worth the money, though.

Every month or two. There is no update schedule. It all depends on the complexity of the new stuff he is adding at the given point in time.

Yep. There is an in-game hint system. Not a separate tutorial - when you start up the game, it gives you information what you might need to do next. However, there are still options you need to discover on your own, of course.
This game has no playability for me......cuz I can't stop modding the darned thing! :p
Seriously though if the game doesn't keep you having fun the mods will and its only going to get better as Tynan adds new stuff and as modders understand things more.

I don't think it gets stale at all.....if I get to a point where I am getting bored with a game I start a new one with different settings...maybe a different story teller, higher difficultly, new location on the map, try a new mod or two. Even though the game is not "finished" yet I find it highly playable and every game I have played so has never turned out the same way.
awesome , thanks for the replys-
one last question: Im kinda a purist so i like to play and beat a game a few times before i mod it. Is this game fun without mods or are they mandatory ?
Ive had a good streak of finding some gems to play for hundreds of hours- i think this might add to that =) CK2 and PA are all im playing right now but i want to make room for this
I generally been playing without mods so far as I'm a purist as well, only tried a few at the end of a version (just before a new version is released) - which means after having played a couple colonies without. So my above recommendation was primarily based on the vanilla-experience.
With that said, Rimworld is however quite mod-friendly and got a good selection of mods already, so I'm sure you will get a positive experience both on the vanilla-side and the modding-side. :3
OK I BOUGHT IT! IT IS NOT INSTALLED!
Im about to click on it fellas.....if everything goes according to plan, this will be my last post here for a while.
Good luck soldier....
