Creative Colonial Building Thread A Building Challenge. |
I thought I might start a bit of a building challenge in response to the thread "How to bring the colonies out into the open again? (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=6365.0)". Which if you haven't already seen it this post talks about possible ways to entice us to build out in the open. One possible way, which I suggested on page 15, is to have a creative building thread so players can put effort into making beautiful colonies and share them with each other.
So here it is; Please do plan, build, create, share with us your extraordinary creations. The challenge is to build a colony (preferably outside in the open) to look visually appealing. We don't wanna see fortresses designed to withstand endless attacks, this thread is here to encourage everyone to build in the open and utilise the space they are given
You can:
-
Play at any difficulty (Pheobe - Basebuilder is recommended)
-
You can build into mountians, though It's preferred you build out in the open or at least have some stuff that is out in the open.
-
Have as many people as you like/build as large as you like.-
Use mods, any aethetics is good aethetics.
You cannot:
-
Build kill boxes.-
Wall yourself in, or build roofs everywhere to stop drop pods.
Take pride in your work. When you submit tell us what you named your colony, give us screenshots, give us descriptions. Whatever information you feel like sharing do so. Look forward to seeing/submitting some work :).

Ninja EDIT:
I seem to have lost my screenshots, but I'm currently in game with one of my sea side colonies, its quite a breeze since i've been making a bunker for invasions lol much like D-Day gonna insert those later.
but Aesthetically here's a very nice colony that I have worked on previously that I made sure that each place looks good and has a function. It's walled but you guys can appreciate design right?
To those who have seen my old colony, I really like it so im gonna show it again to the new guys!

How odd.... I am new here and have only built colonies outside.....i only mine if i find metals of some kind to use or sell...
I've been playing for quite a long time and i think outdoor colonies are the best, depending on how you set up your defences.
Indoor colony = cabin fever
outdoor colony = enemy drop pods

On the topic of outdoor colonies and long games...
Given that most build in hillside do most also pick the maps with mountains or are games typically so short no one gets to the point of building really large because they either die or build a ship and leave?
Does anyone decide not to build the ship and instead remain on the planet?
Won't map resources run dry outside of growing trees and crops and whatever raiders and events bring you?
While loosing is fun is the real loosing in this game when you actually do good and become well enchrenched and established?

Depends on what difficulty you play at. I mean objectively your right the map will eventually run dry of natural resources and true enough that can halt construction for you. However traders still run buy and most of them sell the resources you need. Harvesting cotton, hats, foods, wood and selling them to traders can seem tedious, but when you have a stockpile of over 5k food that's roughly 5k you can spend on what you need, in my case on plasteel. Your colony suddenly turns from a colony to a factory, monopolising on a good and trading.
One common method for people is to butcher the raiders who come through and use their leather to make hats to sell. also selling raider items is good. Surviving raiders they either convert or they harvest for organs, then sell them to slavers. I prefer not this method, but I can certainly see the monopoly in it.
I showed my Fran's Court in the "show us your outdoor colony thread"
but I could do an update =P just to say outdoor colony without killbox
is really fatal ;D
I have maybe 5 or 6 turrets total
I lose colonists at a steady pace (ofc I recruit colonists all the time, too)
but have managed to get the invaders flee every time
There's been some real sticky situations =P (if Levin is reading, you're a star ;D)
I had to manage my colony with 3 people after one raid and Levin caught a disease Miracle was badly wounded but still walking and Fran is a pacifist so she's usually just fine. but they kept the colony running for the most part
keeping *almost* all the wounded & prisoners fed/treated
(http://i.imgur.com/WxHNSZC.jpg)
I'd like to do some renovations there but I usually end up getting put into situation
where expanding the colony isn't possible cause the raids usually cripple my people real good =P
Okay so this build is a lot like the other one I posted in the other colony thread. However I decided to do a new one since I had made a couple kill boxes. Though, using Edb's prepare carefully mod, I did start with the same 4 colonists again. In general I think this colony has sort of refined the idea I had in the last one, wasting less space and lowering traveling times for haulers in general.
So let's break it down. The colony, known as The New Rim Empire, the central square is a highlight of beauty and helps split the colony into four easily traversed sections.
The Agricultural Area
This area is the most vital for our colonists. Thusly they decided to build it in the safest area. A natural rock formation just off screen insures that few raiders attempt to attack towards that direction. All the food and plants are grown and harvested in this area. Furthermore, the cafeteria and butchery are located nearby ensuring a short travel time for the haulers to haul the food into the cafeteria, where it is typically prepared in the kitchen, the rim famous Simple Meals prepared by none other than our former-slave "Not-a-scot" Scotsman are a international delight, which are only made better by Welsh's farm fresh potatoes and strawberries.
The Industrial Area
The name really speaks for itself here. This is pretty much where everything is done here. From healing the sick and wounded to our other former slave "Simple" Simon droning on with his near constant work to create the materials for our roads. All our goods are bought and sold here with excited traders just begging for a chance to done a famous New Rim Empire T-shirt. And here Aoi has single-handedly brought us into the future, discovering such new and exciting technologies as "Colored Lights."
The High-Risk Area
This is the area that are most high-risk things are stored. Located here is the prison, and the prisoners, with our colony leader Kees (who considers himself a master debater) frequently enjoys lengthy and usually fruitless conversations with passive prisoners who have spent half their lives in there. Of course, no High Risk Area would be complete without a good ol' fashioned armory. Where all the armor and weapons are stored, in a safe, dry environment. Aye, if our colony believed in nuclear weapons or mutated sewer lizards they would certainly be stored here.
The Residential Area
What's to say about this section. This is where all our colonists live... well that's it. They certainly enjoy the height of luxury out here on the Rim in these homes. No barbaric raider or high class tribal would ever get carpet or wooden beds of such a high quality (indeed they frequently attack just to get a chance to feel the carpet between their toesies). Alas, we are forced to brutally murder them, steal their clothes, and burn their corpses. Oh woa is us for having to commit such heinous acts in order to keep our carpets clean. But have you TRIED to get tribal dirt from out of your carpet? No I don't think so.
Hey it's Kees! It's me!
Love it mate, simple and effective. I did a similar design I wanted a centre point to make travelling easier, but It got blown out of proportions.
Speaking of which...
Finally completed it, Took me long enough though. :D
Atrium Gates
"One of 2 steadfast gates between the eastern peninsula and the continent. It stands to this day as the only pass between, the only way into Drifter Sanctuary."
http://imgur.com/a/ZTUKH (http://imgur.com/a/ZTUKH)
The town basically has a wall of stone and plasteel inlay that splits the entire map into 2 halves. Essentially any visitors or travellers passing by must pass through Atrium in order to get to the other side. So when 2 rival factions meet up in the centre there is an epic stand-off :D. I've tried to build not for practicality but more for aesthetics so I hope you guys like the design.
I'll add more pictures to the folder later. Show off the tavern maybe, hospital, cells etc. I think it looks especially western and I love it :D. I can see myself making a lore out of this too with the map I am using.
*gasp* the central area is amazing!
I demanse close ups asap
my colonists want to migrate there right now
love the "green quarter" down there
the hospital and tavern ain't hard to miss but whaat are the rest!
I usually always play an outdoor colony. This is on Classic difficulty with no mods. Usually a bit rough to start but once the kill box is up it is much easier to manage raids.

Updated the album with more images. But I'll go through each one individually ;), just for you shinzy.
Tavern
"Need a good strong belt before hitting the road again? Since Atrium is a pathway between the north and south of the map countless hundreds have passed through the town and on the way usually stopped to visit, have a chat, grab a bite to eat and so on. Tavern is in a spot where most of these travellers stop. It was actually my first building too, so this essentially is the 'centre' of my colony."
http://i.imgur.com/3Ztdz5f.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/3Ztdz5f.jpg)
Prison, Comms room, Tailors
"I wanted a real western looking stocks/prison. So each prison cell is sealed off with metal bars and the sheriff lives closeby. In this case Ms. Kirk is my Sheriff and Emmie is my Deputy. We also have a state of the art comm system, good relations with our allies and a tailoring station to make hats out of spare materials we get from hunting."
http://i.imgur.com/fwHMiAt.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/fwHMiAt.jpg)
Blacksmith, Crematory, Burning chamber, Brick Reserves
"a Nice blacksmith open to the path for everyone to see. The Crematories lie behind the burning chamber out of sight and mind. It was originally a mountain so I just built around it."
http://i.imgur.com/lW2C9OT.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/lW2C9OT.jpg)
Wood stockpile, Hospital, Orbital launchpad
"Paid special detail to the designs and construction of the Hospital and the Launchpad. I wanted them to look futuristic and stand out from the rest. Hospital is even lined with silver braces, which I though was really nice. As for the logs... every planet needs a, 'woodstock' ;)."
http://i.imgur.com/TeppOlD.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/TeppOlD.jpg)
Housing, Outdoor areas
"Everyone has their own house, their own double bed, their own place of sanctuary. Plus a fair decent outdoors area nearby to congregate and chat with their neighbours."
http://i.imgur.com/4xkYAvo.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/4xkYAvo.jpg)
Farms
"These farms are so productive that it I have to have 8 bionic farmers assigned just to keep up with it. It's so productive that on a good yield I can bankrupt most traders when they come by :D. So much fun doing that."
http://i.imgur.com/qG03E3j.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/qG03E3j.jpg)
Husbandry
"Somehow thought it was a good idea to keep animals in a confined space for extended periods of time. The pigs seem happy enough but the muffalo are truly wild beasts. Their the reason I ended up installing stone brick doors. I now only have to sit back and wait for them to breed. Besides that fact breeding isn't in the vanilla game it probably doesn't help my case that all the animals in the pen are Male."
http://i.imgur.com/x7r8Wgc.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/x7r8Wgc.jpg)
There are heaps more things in my Imgur album: http://imgur.com/a/ZTUKH (http://imgur.com/a/ZTUKH) including the junkyard, vaults, weapons caches, housing, the walls themselves.
I still need to add more to it though. For 1 I need a laboratory and another I was considering adding some kind of monument or memorial centre that is lined with gold walls. Would be very expensive, so I have to save. Lab shouldn't be too difficult though. Might be also considering adding a stable of some kind or more aesthetic buildings :).

This entire base looks great, but I'm copying your orbital launchpad stockpile design in particular, it looks great and I strongly suspect that people will try to steal my things in future updates.
I haven't been playing very long so no incredible screenshots from me yet, but this thread has some pretty amazing colonies, how long does it take to build these things?
Depends what your building them out of :D, currently in my game I'm approaching year 5. It took me a fair while, mainly just getting money for plasteel and more metal (my map contained very little of either). I guess it took me a couple of week on and off playing. I had uni in-between so it's hard to give you a good estimate on time-frame. All I can say is I enjoyed doing it, it was fun to make a colony with a unique concept. If you enjoy your colony enough time will pass fast enough :).
I chose Pheobe on Basebuilder so raid sizes are at 5% of normal so I can afford to take my time beautifying. A useful hint, if you choose tougher difficulties it will get progressively harder to build for aesthetics. Nothing wrong with the easiest setting I enjoy it a lot.
Staying in the Western Firefly Theme my colonists founded "Hurray" (As in: "Hurray we survived the crash"). Primary plan and feature is the Main Street. Among the first and core buildings you will find the Sheriff's - housing the jail -, the Doctor's, the Saloon, and a Bank. The Bank's super secure vault is famous for having no roof though.
http://imgur.com/a/sQdQ4#snfDl5H
EDIT: More images at http://imgur.com/a/Kt4DY
Defending this has been surprisingly easy. Albeit some colonist lost their lives to show me which tactical moves work better than others. I did learn that ample use of inner doors will give a huge tactical advantage as long as the fight is brought into the colony. If ever a group of colonists face a similar number, or more more opponents, simply withdraw indoors. From there walk to another useful spot, or wait for the right moment.
Alpha 7 has been essential for this, as minor damage to colonists - i.e. torn off limbs - is acceptable. Also, at this point (Feb Year 3) the last few attacks did cost me a colonist each, but still a lot less than could be added (Crecruited - Clost > 0).
Added benefits are that expanding the settlement is easy, just add buildings anywhere (except on the Main Street!), and a growing field easy to add too.
LOVE IT! probably my fav build ive seen so far. Good work.
Firelfy western theme is the best theme out there stan ;). But love the town especially the battle scenes their awesome.

Alright, so i sorta have a kill box, but i don't really think its a kill box, its really only there to make sure they don't side attack me with a 3 launch rocket launcher, i had a short nightmare of it. (Reloaded save... fixed, lol.) i also don't know how to take screenshots.
Figured I've been using this colonist name/profession setup (from a rather big-name property) long enough through EdB Prepare Carefully, I might as well model their home after something one of 'em owns:

https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=5258.msg50443#msg50443
they killed four of my colonists before rerouting!
thank god you can now make friends with them with the release prisoners thing
I don't have a colony worth submitting to this project (yet) since I'm still really new to the game and learning each time a new build comes out and I restart. I don't use any mods either and still exploring that aspect of the game.
I just wanted to say this thread is really interesting and really opens my eyes to the long-term potential of the game beyond just building a ship and leaving which is ok for once or twice playthrough but I really want to get to the place where I can have a colony for many years of ingame time and watch it evolve and grow. These pictures y'all are posting give me hope I can learn to accomplish that and make it look really nice too. I'm in awe at the amazing detail and organization many of you are showing. Wow.
Edit: If you could suggest just a few mods that make long-term play and large-scale colony life better, easier to manage and prettier, I'd appreciate a short list!

can it sink underground? =P
aaand you won't have bunking for the rest!
I wish it could sink underground, or at least that the power stations looked more like the turbines from the original. Might use RTGs for the next attempt... and we're strictly a catch and release colony... though I'll be making the next one bigger to include more of the cast. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a good enough way to make Mog, Umaro, Gogo, Relm or Gau. So that'll be... 9 bedrooms, 10 if I keep using Maria (who I only use because she fits so well with the pop idol backstory).

Did you discover anything odd about the stratum underneath while digging the foundations? Can a madman set it on fire?
Also, that's really awesome! ;D
We decided not to check the stratum. Last time scared Terra... and thankfully, the madman keeps overestimating the effectiveness of fire against marble.
Also, thanks to both of ya!

Personally I don't use mods that change the game itself. I like the EdB Interface, Ice Sheet, and Snappy Dresser mods. Ice Sheet enables that biome, and the other two are cosmetic only.
Edit - I get little play time, so my colonies usually go for around two years before the next alpha comes out. And I play on Randy or Phoebe, 30% or less.
Here's the colony known as Hope.
Done in Basebuilder mode because we are a peace loving people..

And here is the colony again at night time. Really enjoyed the path lamps from one of the mods I'm using. I may post some close ups at some point if people care enough.

they're tucked away really far somewhere
I figured the best way to find them is through
ingame -> options -> open save data folder and it'll take you to the place with all the savefiles and screenshots and all
My last colony, pretty successful, I do like mining into the rocks though.

How do you post the screenshots?
You can upload them to a site like imgur (http://imgur.com/).
Then in your post, paste the URL of the image you want to show, highlight it, and click the image button (https://ludeon.com/forums/Themes/BlackRainV3_20g_/images/bbc/img.gif), or manually put the image tags around the URL like:

:l i'll do it this way, seeing as its kinda something i understand and i don't clog up the thread.

The top is my oldest colony, it was build just to survive, not very pretty, some of the images in there is showing how lucky i got to get a friggin cyber barrage so early. The other colony is the colony i am playing now, i built it to look prettyish, its kinda cool looking with the lights i have.
Quick update on my re-imagining New Figaro with all 9 playable characters that are feasible as RimWorld pawns:
I looked at some old 16-bit screenshots, did some counting and arithmetic, and came up with some dimensions. If one FF6 tile is equal to one RimWorld tile, it would look something like this:

...which is entirely too small.
So I looked at a 3D interpretation of the castle, factored in creative vectoring for the 16-bit version, recalculated exterior dimensions based on one of the interior cells and doubled every dimension... and then modified things to fit some steam geysers my map... and came up with this:

...plus an entry hall down south the same size as the throne room in the north. Just slightly too tall to fit in one screenshot.
Might be awhile before I've got this marble monstrosity built. Thinking about lining it in granite on the outside. Also, I'm on my bigger, beefier windows computer for this one, which I can't spend nearly as much time on as my old bedside Linux box. Physical limitations.
I know it was not very long from my last post, but i have played this colony alot, and so i got a few new updates, Including one of my colonist dead, then another having to get her brain having to get a AI to help. So yea.
