Post by: Igabod on December 11, 2014, 05:04:18 AM
This is just a condensed list of mods currently available for Alpha 8. Bumping this just to let everybody know that I've been updating this list every day. We currently have about 36 mods listed for Alpha 8. This list is sure to keep growing too.

It's still unofficial as far as Ludeon and Tynan are concerned, hence the name.

It may be too much to ask, but could you also add the date each mod last was updated as well?

No problem. It's helping me quite a bit with finding the mods with ideas I need to borrow from for my own mods.

That might be a bit difficult in these early stages of Alpha 8 because most mods will be updating pretty frequently and it is already a fairly big obligation to keep the list updated every time a new mod comes out. Maybe when the initial rush slows down I can think about adding in a date though. I'll keep that in mind.

Tynan removed the sticky from the last version of this list because he doesn't want to give the idea that this is an official list.

One small suggestion. Once you have gone trough the list and chosen your mods, next time you come back its kinda annoying to go over the whole list again to look if there is new mods added. How about whenever there is new mod, you add them in new section?

Like 17.12.2014

List of all new mods

20.12.2014

List of all new mods?

Smth like that.

Other than that its still really helpful list :)

I made a decision when I started the list to do it alphabetically because in the long run that ends up being far easier to navigate than a chronological order listing. It might be fine for someone who checks the list every day, but for the people who are brand new to the game and looking for the first mod it can be confusing and the dates are all meaningless since everything is new to that person. I thought of adding a *NEW tag to all of the new additions, but that would become a bit of a hassle to remove the old new tags every day or week or whatever. So I'm going to try and keep it as simple as possible considering I don't have all the functions of a full website to automatically place and remove the tags with scripts. If I were doing this on an actual website where I had access to the tools necessary I would certainly do that though.

Evul did sticky the last mod list. Tynan himself removed the sticky because he doesn't want people to get the idea that it is an official list. He feels that the forum makes it an even playing field for all mods. I disagree with him, but the point is he is God on these forums and Evul simply obeys his wishes, as do we all if we are smart.

Immersive Rim did that but isn't updated for Alpha 8 yet. I think clutter might have it too, that one has been updated for A8. Clutter (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=2541)

And I think there is another one, but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head.

Sorry, I'll try to find out which one has it. I thought it was clutter but I guess not.

[edit to add] was it Glitter Tech? If that's the one you were thinking of, it also hasn't been updated for A8 yet. I will think about adding it into my Advanced Lamps mod if I can't find another mod that already has it.

I *COULD* put them all together in one zip. But a lot of them conflict with each other and I'm definitely not going to do all the work to make them compatible. I think I would have to get permission from all the mod owners to actually do that too and that's a lot of different people to contact. Not to mention I'd have to update that zip almost every day since there are new mods coming out that frequently. It's an awful lot of work to do that.

It might be worth adding when the mod was last updated and possibly what version it is currently on. That should allow people to glance over the list and see if their favourites have been updated recently.

Indeed that would be a full time job. I might be able to do it if I didn't have other responsibilities. But as it is I'm working on 3 mods actively, assisting other modders where I can, maintaining this list, taking care of my mother who is disabled and unable to do much of anything for herself anymore, helping a friend's wife out while he is in jail, and also taking care of my neighbor's dog every weekend when she goes out of town. That only leaves a small amount of time for actually playing this game every now and then.

So I'm afraid that this android is currently at his processor limits. If I were to take on another job at this time then I would no longer perform within optimal parameters.

Nah, if I was a ninja I'd have better reflexes and wouldn't have broken my hip when I was in the Navy. But yesterday I became an impromptu fireman. Fought down a blazing forest fire behind my house and kept it from damaging my house at all. Even saved my neighbors house. All with a garden hose. The real firemen showed up in time to clean up  the small spot fires that I couldn't reach with my hose. There is no longer a forest behind my house though. Just a blackened acre of land and a nice clearing that might just become a strawberry field in the spring.

Well now that the list is getting pretty long I'm finding I have to limit the descriptions a bit. So I'm getting pretty good at re-writing descriptions. Unfortunately the description is limited to 12 words on the wiki so I'm going to have a lot of trouble doing that. It's also a lot of work entering all of the stuff into the wiki. It's easier with this cause I started at the beginning of Alpha 8 and add new mods as they are created. But converting the huge list into the format used by the wiki is a daunting task. I'll probably end up devoting an entire day to it tomorrow and get all the mods listed. Writing the 12 word descs for all of them is going to be a much longer job though.

Is there a mod for domesticating animals/herding? I think that's a pretty good idea, and would make it myself if I could...

There was for A7 (we're on A8). They're working on bringing it to A8, with an ETA of Feb. 1st. I don't know if it's still running, but Sengira_nanaki was streaming a copy of it earlier, to get interest, to bug test, to demo - whichever reason you'd like.

The link is here (to both the mod and the stream - stream is in his post which - as of right now - is the last post, full mod details are on the first page): https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=3464.1125

Lord Tynan has spoken his thoughts on this already and does not want that to happen. And since I'm in no way affiliated with Ludeon Studios or the forum itself it will never be called "official". Unless of course Lord Tynan wants to give me a job and pay me a small fee to maintain an official mod list. In which case I'd put it on a separate page and use all the fancy HTML sorcery to make the list sortable and add tags to mods denoting what kind of things are changed in them and all the other neat stuff everybody has suggested that isn't possible on these forums.

[edit to add] You can of course click on the notify button at the top of the thread and have an email sent to you every time a new comment is posted.

Yeah the "official" thing is understandable ( although slightly bureaucratic admittedly)

But the pinning seems innocuous enough - There are a few posts that've been pinned for convenience that weren't posted by affiliates or mods.

I personally don't want to get an email for every post.

Well, Tynan has his reasons for removing the sticky from this post and he is the final word around here. As for the emails thing, most of the posts on this thread are just me saying which mods have been added. There haven't been too many side conversations on here except regarding the sticky subject.

Didn't know this post had ever been stickied - apologies if that was mentioned at some point I'll admit to not trawling through all 8 pages. Slightly strange, perhaps it was to do with the visibility of mods not listed though that doesn't seem a massive concern.

Regarding emails I still don't particularly want an email (nearly every day), I have a hard enough time keeping my inbox clear :D

Well anyway if it's all been discussed previously I won't rehash it, I'll just go back to being slightly perplex'd and ctrl+F-ing page by page until I find this post every time :D

Looks like it was be sticky and made unsticky later. Still u can bookmark this thread in ur browser instead of looking for it every time. Or u can use the "Show new replies to your posts." option to see if something new here.

might i suggest making categories, then hiding the mods in spoilers within the categories? Like Decor, Factions, Enemies, Turrets, Walls, Food, Medical, Energy, Weapons.

Nope. Not possible for one (no spoiler tags on this forum). And I'm not going to be doing a categorized list anyway for many reasons which I've already gone over multiple times on this thread.

This list will no longer be maintained on the forums. At least not by me. I'm currently too busy to maintain it every day. I will however be doing my best to contribute to the Official Rimworld Wiki Mod List (http://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Mods). I would appreciate at least 1 volunteer to help me with that endeavor (mainly to add in the ones I miss). If you're interested in doing that please contact either myself or Evul via the messaging system on these forums and we will give you the information you need to get started on it.
