I suggest that perhaps a different "game mode" is included. Maybe instead of playing until the colonists are able to leave the planet, perhaps they choose to stay. Eventually they develop a rudimentary economy and it would more or less become a city.

Seems like the focus is more of a buildup to getting the colonists off that planet they crashed on, unless im mistaken? Would be awesome if this game were to get a depth that rivals DF.
What would make an interesting dynamic is to have a motive stat for a colonist's desire to leave or stay, modified by happiness/fear but based on a certain fixed amount randomized per colonist. Meaning that some colonists will, no matter what, want to eventually leave... while others will be far more inclined to never want to leave.

The story is technically about them leaving the world, but most people play it to last forever. Even Dwarf Fortress players sometimes just let the fortress run forever rather than unleash the !FUN!.
