Title: [A13] LED Lights - V 1.4 (14/4/2016)

Does what it says on the tin.

Adds a series of LED rope lights and lamps.

These are meant to light up small areas and hallways.

Now included is a basic LED lamp and LED grow lamp with a higher cost and slightly larger glow radius

Rope lights double as a power conduits.

Includes 3 research projects to unlock the lights.

Costs silver to build



I've made a new designation category for these called "Lighting" since I felt that the furniture category was getting congested with different mods and new lights being added.

They can be placed over walls and objects such as work tables or the comms console like in the picture.

Version Info

1.0 Initial release using Vanilla art assets
1.1 Release with new textures and link types, as well as a change in altitude layer
1.1 CCL A CCL (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=14172.0/) compatible version generously done by 1000101 (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=32730/). Requires Community Core Library (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=14172.0/) to be loaded first to run.
1.2 A12c update. Added LED lamps and removed vanilla lights from the lighting tab
1.3 A12d update. Added HID LED lamps (probably needs a big balancing) This is a CCL version only and requires CCL to be loaded first!
1.4 A13 update. Quick A13 update to get things running. Removed CCL requirement so we're back to demolishing lights to change their colour.

Big thank you to CucumPear for interim 1.35 patch!

  • This mod may be used in any mod packs provided forum rules are followed.
  • Derivative mods may be created based on this mod, though any suggestions for changes, balances, and additions is much more appreciated.  ;)

It needs a better texture but I like the idea. I might include it in my Advanced Lamps mod (with your permission of course) when I finally get the time to make additions to my mods.

All I did for now was recycle the power conduit texture so I could get some feedback to see if it would be worth making it its own texture. Drawing atlases seems like a pain in the butt...

And of coarse you can use it!
I was thinking of your mod when I made this since it would fit under the larger umbrella of advanced lamps. Just didn't know how to approach it so I made it a mini mod.  :P

Edit: One thing I did think of though, is that with these being able to be placed under walls, it makes lighted walls a bit redundant unless you're going for greater glow distance.

I personally would make it so they can't go under walls. Not very realistic. I especially liked the idea though because I actually use LED rope lights to light up my bedroom.

Pretty much. I made them floor emplacements too even though I want them on the cieling because they look goofy if they go on top of the wall. Yeah, a new texture would make it look better. You would have to design the texture so that it is actually just to the side of the wall rather than right in the center of it. That would be a lot of work but it would be worth it. I have my LED lights all along the corner between the ceiling and the wall. I'll have to play around with it to see exactly how possible it is to make it look right. But that will have to wait.

On a side note, the short glow radius of these makes the darkness mod even creepier than it was before... IRL I'm a big chicken who has little light sensitive LED night lights all over my house. That and I'm too lazy to turn lights on and off when I get home from work at midnight...

Lol, I have those too. But I just have them in the hallway between my room and the bathroom and one directly at the bottom of the stairs so I can go out to smoke in the middle of the night.

I still haven't come up with a texture I'm happy with, and I'm about to throw my monitor into the skylight well. (It's a strait shot to the basement from here and I'm in my 4th floor loft)

Finally made a new texture for this. It's simple but I really like it. I changed it to two thin parallel strands that double back at end pieces instead of the thick power conduit texture. I think this is better since IRL rope lights are rather fine strands. this also makes them look like they've been stuck to the walls at ceiling corners. I'm looking for feedback please, good or bad.

Included the slightly redone mod as with the new texture I changed the altitude layer so that they will appear on top of walls as originally  intended.

Also can someone let me know how to get these to link to power transmitters but not draw the link to them so they don't go all wonky connecting to things that aren't light ropes.

thanks for the feedback Eisenwulf :) I will do more work on this tonight once I'm home. I've still gotta figure out how hard it is to make these their own link flag so the texture doesn't connect to power conduits.

Unfortunately even though I've had this game since A6 I haven't thought of anything good to mod in till now.

I really like the new texture! The height is a bit weird looking in the pic (intersecting with console), but aside from making a floor LED and a roof LED there isn't much to do. 1 silver and 1W is totally balanced, LEDs are very small and efficient.

Unfortunately if a building is set to buildingTall these will clip through them :( we need a ceiling layer. Thank you for your balance feedback, I wanted them to be a bit costly to build but have almost non existent power usage ( I have an LED at home that uses 0.03 watts at 110 volts )

These look so good!! Just wondering, what does the CCL version do differently? Let you change the colours once they are built? Anyways, amazing work, they look so amazing! And a great alternative to having an ugly lightbulb just randomly sitting on the floor

Yep.  :) It also cleans up the menu a bit and makes it so you don't have to demolish them if you decide you want to change it to another colour.

It seems from the poll that everyone thinks this is more or less balanced so for now I will leave the balance as is. The idea being they're expensive to get and cheap to maintain, sort of like IRL LED lights.

A12 update (finally)

Added an LED lamp as well as an LED grow lamp.

Will add pictures of the lamps tonight after work if I can remember my imgur login  :-\

I'm currently on A12c so I can't verify if this is bug free on A12d. If someone who has the updated version can give it a shot and let me know it would be greatly appreciated.  :)

I see 3 files to download..which file does what? Also I am getting a shadow error at loadup with the roplights but not the LED file.

You want version 1.2, the shadow error is from the A11 version. I've removed the older versions but if someone still wants them let me know and I will repost them.

I will work on a CCL version, the last version of it was done by the author of CCL so I will have to figure out how its done.

UPDATE!

Version 1.3 adds HID LEDs to the mix.
This version is a CCL version only.

Save game friendly as long as you already have CCL installed and don't have any pre-existing coloured LED rope lights (deconstruct them first or change them to white LED rope lights). Just remember to reactivate the mod in the mods menu.

Changed Poll to see if anyone has issues with this becoming a CCL compatible only mod.


ALSO! If any of you out there are artistically inclined and would like to see your work as the textures to this mod please don't hesitate to say something! Your work will be fully credited and greatly appreciated, I'm not the best artist if you couldn't tell that already :P

It stands for High Intensity Discharge. It's just a much brighter LED light. I'm thinking of adding an extra research project for it.

Quick A13 update to get things up and running again. CCL requirement removed. No coloured HIDs for now as I lost my original textures for the menu buttons, but coloured rope lights are in!

Thank you to CucumPear for the 1.35 interim patch!

Should work fine. It will give you the mod mismatch warning due to having new mod active but nothing bad should happen.

thank you for SCREAMING so loudly. my guess is that the op did NOT want to use an external file shareing site and used the attahments in the forum (just requires a login to see the attachments but nothing else(unlike some of the file sharing sites)

Ouch... Didnt know the deserts in Rimworld gave people such sick burns over to the forums xD

I'll be honest, I too created an account on the forums "just" to be able to download all mods, then forgot I even had an account for a while, and recently got hooked into the forum and everything around it, helping people test mods, give them advice and (if everything works as expected) joining the world of modding. He did not have to be an asshole, he could just be quiet about it and try to enjoy the stuff people post on the forum... Now I spend more time looking at the forum than I spend playing the game xD

After playing with a few different worlds I must say, I love this mod. I only have one complaint, the glow range of the grow light strips, would it be possible to have their effect slowly drop off over a distance rather than cut off completely for things that are a single block further than the current effective range?

Basicaly, I have tried several grow rooms set up based around the LED lights and using the squarish nature of rimworld and having square grow rooms there would always be at least 4 of my crops not getting the propper ammount of light close to the corners of the rooms

Just my input, other than that I love this and hope to see it grow =D

That's just rounding errors of the core game.  Since the glow radius is so low (3, iirc), they will have a steep falloff when converted from 192 pixels to 3 cells.  Each cell is 64x64 pixels, 3*64 = 192, each pixel is computed for light level, average light level of the entire cell is calculated, result is 100/66/33/0 at ranges (from centre) of 0/1/2/3+.  A larger glower radius would give a smoother falloff.

This mod seems like pure awesomes, the solution to efficient and long hallways lighting.
Is it working with the new version? And hopefully we will see an update soon.

v1.5 CCL - Alpha 14 Update with CCL Color Selection

I haven't seen Loki88 in a while and I wanted to make it CCL compatible for A14.

Attached is v1.5 for CCL v0.14.0+ (A14).

Just an assumption but I guess 1000101 might update for A15 like he did with A14. But I don't think that will happen until CCL gets updated.

Shouldn't be too hard to get the base (i.e. non-CCL) version working with A15. That would mean you'd have to deconstruct the lights to change color though.

Edit:
I updated it to A15. All credit for the mod belongs to Loki88. All blame for errors belongs to Deimos Rast (and I'm not just saying that).
- I made a second version (mainly for myself), which simplifies the research requirements. It consolidates 3 techs into one and it no longer requires the High Tech research bench. If you want that version, the second link is for you (it'll say SIMPLE).
- Tested both versions in game, works fine, although they could be brighter (something else I'll probably change in my personal version).
- See included Changelog for details.

Issues:
- Placing two different colored lights next to each other causes overlapping colors to cancel. There can only be one!

Updated the mod slightly, reverting the power conduit behavior (rope lights now act as conduits again). I talked to Loki88, and he did this originally to prevent the lights from getting all the "power connection" lines which look ugly. I think it's a clever idea, and would never have thought of it.

Also, and this is important! I had to rename the mod folder and mod name (removing the version from the title) otherwise every time I do a version increase, the game would register it as a new mod. However, since I made this change now, that means with this update, if you are using the previous version, this version will be registered as a new mod by the game! Everything under the hood is the exact same, but you have to disable the old one and enable the new one. YOU WILL GET A MOD MISMATCH WARNING ON LOADING A SAVE. You can ignore it. I tested it and it loaded fine. This is a one time inconvenience.

If you're not convinced, backup your save first (should probably do that regularly anyway when installing mods) or stick with the old one, as the changes were minor.

You'll still see the version in the About.xml and Changelog.txt and in the Archive when you download it, but the folder will just be "LED Lights [A15]" and that's what it'll show ingame (as opposed to LED Lights 1.5, since we're now at v1.5.1).

I'm working on it with Loki's blessing. Not sure how long it's going to take since I'm starting over from scratch and not everything is going to be exactly the same.
