Amputation x 4 = stump the no legged dog
As soon as i had my first run in with raiders and (unfortunately) lost one of my pets legs, this was the first thing i searched for. It would be so great if this was made possible and would definitely be an improvement to the game.
Notice this Tynan senapi! :P
One of first uses would be:
- install a peg leg on mufallo (x4)
- remove a liver from mufallo
- remove an eye from mufallo (x2)
...for Medicine training. Level 20 before the end of the first year. There's currently no mood loss for anything related to animals, and animals are very cheap compared to colonists. You can even breed them. Mutilate tiny piglets to learn Medicine.
^
Uh, yeah? That is what doctors actually did.
That, and use human corpses as training aids. Which, there is a mod for that, that I use. Works awesome, and gives my doctor some experience before they go chopping people up for reals.
Well I'm happy such animal abuse is not currently possible in Rimworld.
Real world doctors went pretty far. The guy responsible for inventing of life support machinery would cut dog heads, plug them to his apparatus, and see how long he could keep it alive, or at least twitching. Makes horrors sound tame.
I don't want to make this about animal rights/welfare....
but if 10, or even 100, pigs have to die, so that my surgeon doesn't horribly botch up an operation, then guess what?
Those animals will die without anything more than a quick signature.
Same thing with diseases. I will inject 10,000 lab-mice with a disease in order to find a cure.
Humans are infinitely more important than animals. Does that mean I don't care about them, or want them to feel pain? No, but if an animal has to die so that a human can live, then, well, I won't be crying very hard over it.

Let's watch how a Rimworld suggestion turns into a debate of principles...

Why are you wasting valuable Swine on surgery and vaccinations when you have a perfectly serviceable supply of KO'd raiders to practice on instead! >:)

Oh yeah you could have that...
It would be awesome if we could give limbs to dogs, cats, cows, etc whose limbs got shot off! But i don't want to think about animals having human limbs though... That would be creepy! >.<

Ah ues true.. but there will be no arms but 4 legs and 0 arm attachment.... unless you want a centaur... :P
Another note too. Guys keep on topic!
Ps i finally get my three bars of yellow :)
Yeah I kinda stopped playing this alpha when I realized that you couldn't operate on your pets. It seemed like a no brainer - all the infrastructure is their for it; pets are recognized as colony members, they have the same health etc etc, its just the lack of buttons and parts. Even if we were only aloud to amputate, or install basic parts it would have at least opened it up for modding. Got my first rhino and was all 'haha! Lets see you come through my fully bionic 2 ton killing machine now raiders....... eh what? I cant? Shelved until I can'. Isn't this the last release before Ty goes on holiday? So I get pets, but its a 6 month wait until I can operate on them?

Wait holiday
Well it we will wait...

Ewww!!! *pukes*
Do anyone know how to make it so we can open the operate tab on animals?
The code for the operation itself is available:
<WorkGiverDef>
<defName>DoBillsMedicalAnimalOperation</defName>
<giverClass>WorkGiver_DoBill</giverClass>
<workType>Doctor</workType>
<priorityInType>8</priorityInType>

<verb>operate</verb>
<gerund>operating on</gerund>
<requiredCapacities>
<li>Manipulation</li>
</requiredCapacities>

I like this idea, give you a way to prevent your animals from breeding and let's you practice responsible pet ownership :D
i tried to add it in... however... maybe Ykara can help in XML editing.. (i am worser than a newb at editing XML's) :P

Well, if the UI works and you can select operations it shouldn't be that hard to write some XMLs ^^ How far have you come?

Tried to add recipes to the animals. (No luck)
Added worker diffs provided above (still no luck..)
Did i do something wrong or did i not overwrite the core?
I've tried it with xml and it doesn't seem to work. I've inserted recipes into the Races_Animal_Pet, but it doesn't work. I think we would need a decent dll modder to operate on animals :/
I know this is the opposite of what you're after, but I noticed that it's extremely difficult to Rescue animals. Typically, you first rescue the animal, patch 5/6 of its wounds. Then the animal gets up with one wound bleeding. The wound gets infected. You try to tame it at 8% chance per day. The animal dies from infection.

Yeah. You need C# to create a recipeclass in order to perform any recipe for surgery, xml will get you nowhere.

Oh God- The mental imagery of a patchwork dog made out of human spare parts is outright terrifying. Or a human with animal limbs. Rimworld has suddenly taken a terrifying turn. :o

Oh, I'm pretty sure that this is possible ^^ Just write a recipe that attaches a human hand on the paw and your Frankendog is ready ^^
But since there's no way to attach anything on animals, we have to wait for alpha 13 to do so.

Did you turn on dev mode and go to a animals health tab?

a Valid point BUT when you harvest the legs of an animal you should get some Meat for your Freezer + Harvesting the organs from them to raise medical skill also good BUT when the time comes to it take the heart what do you do with the animals body?... TO THE BUTCHERY TABLE! needless to say animal surgery should be conducted with out using medicine to put them under just a waist of time if you ask me hit them until their unconscious and in the case of Thrombos Have them regenerate lost/damaged limbs and organs just so I can sell them for money and harvest the beast again!
I'm going to hell arn't I?

its not responsible pet ownership that surgery is playing god plain and simple how would you like to be taken to a building knocked out and wake up missing your reproductive bits?

Why dont you cry about humanskin hat or something? :P
There's a bit of code in the .dll hiding the operations tab on the health card. If someone wants to do some black magic to make the operations tab reappear, I would be happy to contribute some animal specific recipes... Playing without operations for animals is slowly killing my soul :P
