Title: [A12d] Gunsmithing Bench
Post by: twoski on August 30, 2015, 04:04:38 PM
Hello all.

Here is a simple mod that allows you to research gunsmithing. It takes 1200 research points to research it, and once you do you get the ability to create gunsmithing tables. You can craft only bullet firing weapons (you aren't allowed to make plasma rifles, grenade launchers, etc). All weapon recipes require steel. More powerful weapons such as the LMG require some plasteel as well. If the person crafting is competent, they are more likely to make a good quality weapon. It takes a fair bit of time (and in some cases, resources) to craft weapons so plan accordingly.

I'm sure someone out there has done this type of mod before, i just wanted to get some practice as well as implement it in a way that i see as balanced and fair. This mod does not make the game much easier, it just provides an alternative way to get your hands on weapons. It takes considerable research time and production time to craft weapons, so you can't farm them extremely fast to turn a profit. You must also make sure you don't use up too much plasteel crafting guns.

Image of it in action (taken in A9, but you get the point):

Grab it here: https://github.com/twoski/RimworldMods/archive/master.zip

Install notes:

Dump the GunSmithing folder from the zip file to your rimworld mods folder and enable it in the mod menu ingame to use it.

Please give credit if you include this in a modpack or use it in another mod.

I love the idea of this mode, but would love to just add the ability to craft guns to the existing smithing table in Core. Could you suggest how could I integrate your gunsmithing table into a mod that would do that?

Well, I've already made such a mod, it's simply named Craftable Guns and is part of my yMods modlist. Just look in my signature ^^

I made this a separate table for a few reasons...

- It's less cluttered if you separate gunsmithing from medieval weapon crafting
- Gunsmithing is clearly more technologically advanced than basic swordsmithing so it requires research to access.
- The gunsmithing table has its own power/space requirements, this is another part of making it balanced.

Hooray!  *downloads*

EDIT - I also would recommend this for inclusion with Vanilla.  My $0.02 USD.  :)

I just want one that uses plasteel and some other exotic material to make mechanoid weapons.

You mean the minigun? That's the only mechanoid weapon you can pick up i thought.

Can I add this to my current game, or can I only use it if I start fresh?

ETA: evidently not. Ah, well
success!

I love any mod that adds the ability to craft weapons. Its awesome when you get a new recruit who is a great shot but only have bows laying around because of tribals. Then you craft he a sniper rifle and he single handily cripples a siege force.

I would love to see mod integration at some point, specifically with Rimfire, Rimsenal, Skullywags weapons mods (Gauss, Laser, and Plasma), and Glitter Tech since I have yet to find a mod to let me craft those and I miss that function from Ultimate Overhaul may it rest in pepperoni. Regardless this is a fantastically implemented mod.

I agree with the thinking behind this.

Thanks for making this!
