Title: Holy Sh**
Post by: AspenShadow on October 08, 2013, 08:38:09 AM
The kickstarter project is now 50,000 dollars over its initial request and still shows steady growth!
We've still got 23 days left until it passes through Kickstarter as a phenomenal success story, I can't help but wonder how much will have built up by then?

We can safely aim for 100K+, since there's so many youtubers spreading the word...

We raised 70k in like, 6 days.

You're aiming too low, friend.

Luckily, the dwarf fortressy style of the game is quite niche, so hopefully be a slightly maturer crowd. Fresh perspective is always great, but also be prepared for the same suggestions a thousand times...

Indeed, the problem with the DF crowd, besides that they are crazy, is that a good chunk wants another DF, which is crazy ! ::)

I've never understood why people think that to make a good game, it needs to be as similar to other good games as humanly possible.
I don't particularly like the Z-levels idea for example: they're humans (And possibly octopusmen, sectoids and reptiles), not dwarves. I think adding something like that would add a lot of unnecessary complexity to the game and make it feel too much like dorf.

I agree for the most part; however, I will say that z-levels would be particularly interesting for immersion regarding multi-story buildings rather than digging deeper and deeper into the planet's crust. Generally speaking, humans tend to build a lot of structures that are taller than a single story and will dig out basements; particularly when there may be atmospheric conditions such as tornadoes, typhoons and hurricanes. Skyscrapers would be ridiculous, but a multi-story lookout tower would fit right in to the game perfectly. All that said, digging 50 "levels" (read: Dwarf Fortress) beneath the surface is completely unnecessary and outside the scope of this game in my opinion.

Anyway, to the topic of this thread, I'm very excited regarding the amount this kickstarter has pulled in. I'm in at the Pirate level and can't wait to try out the prototype.

Damn you and your anticonformity!

Steam realy would be positive for this game, plus the fact that it'll easily raise 100k+ helps raise the game's profile.

The game's almost guaranteed to get on steam at this point. Steam got a lot of positive press from Prison Architect, and Rimworld seems to be heading in the same direction.

Hate the hate!  ;D

tl;dr: I <3 Steam

For whatever it's worth, I prefer Steam these days. Back in 2007, I was gungho anti-DRM of any kind. Steam won me over when I lost a case of my old CD/floppy games during multiple moves in college. Never did find them, but the copies I bought on Steam were still there for me to use. Plus, updates are applied automatically and features like Steam Workshop and Steam Sales (Summer/Winter) more than make up the value for lost privileges with respect to DRM. As someone else mentioned, some programs can still be executed without the Steam client running.

Will I install Origin? No. I'm still generally anti-DRM, but the value Steam provides more than compensates for the trade. For instance, Greenlight makes me aware of game projects I never would have otherwise heard of without cruising a hundred internet forums. Further, I still maintain libraries on the Humble Store and GoG for other DRM free titles. My only gripe with the Steam client is that I hope they create a SteamLite version that uses a tenth (or less) the system resources and only acts as a game library manager sans store/community/profile.

If Steam ever shuts down, I will likely never use another game client again and buy direct from developers. However, I have full faith that Steam isn't going anywhere and therefore have pretty much thrown all my eggs in their baskets with a few exceptions (GoG, Humble Shop).

That's pretty normal on a developer forum. Only users who actually care about the game bother to even create an account...

You get hate on non-specific forums like Steam. Every snot-nosed brat has something useful to say there. For values of useful.

If i check other gameboards/forums and community's like reddit i also so very little hate there.

I'm still betting at 150K+ for this kickstarter.

Welcome to the Internet.

But seriously, it's largely pointless to chide them for not searching. You can let them know about search when you're done answering their question, but if the board's old hands get into the habit of simply saying "search for it" then you're going to build up a hostile culture that puts off new players.
Title: Re: Holy Sh**
Post by: British on October 11, 2013, 02:07:09 PM
I guess I should have put more smileys...

Also, GC13, seems like you have missed the dozen posts I'm made for answering people, where I do answer the question and explain how I found about that subject having been addressed already...

And I'll continue like so.
If some people find the answer and how I got it useful and they learn from it, all the better.
If they don't, and continue not doing their research, I'll answer and point the search again, and ultimately my sleep won't be affected.
I'll also continue joking about it if I'm in such a mood.

I wasn't accusing, just stating: when people start getting up in arms about the search feature not being used, rather than taking it in stride, things start getting unpleasant. >.>

it has absolutely nothing to do with each other (-:
steam works through selection. The selection can either be greenlight or true one of there employees being your contact or noticing your game.
