Title: [MOD REQUEST] - Better Unit Managing - Gear and Apparell
Post by: MightyGooga on January 26, 2016, 10:53:02 PM
Hello,

For who it may concern, I would like to request a mod that would improve in the interface of managing clothing, equipment and general gear for the colonists.

Yeas Im aware of dozen mods that tweak interface and they are all amazing, but what I would like to see, and I believe other would like to is a interface for managing the equipment of a colonist that would allow you to actualy define what he/she is wearing graphically. Let me try to explain.

A:

1 - Select Colonist Open New Outfiting interface
2 - In this interface you would see your colonists and around him there would be icons with descriptions of what he is wearing (Like in a old RPG style game)
3 - In a different space, you woul be able to see your inventory of equipment, graphically, with description. And you would be able to click and drag the equipment to the convenient slot. This would generate a order so that colonist would go to inventory and equip it.

This would bring caring for equipment back into the game, so you could dress and create uniforms cliking and draging itens into slots, but also you would know what you have in stock so your colonist wouldnt run around naked.

B:

4 - I would like to see, like in Dwarffortress, colonist have preferences for itens, like one in particular likes, rimram fur and iguana leather, so equiping itens with those properties could bring a boost to morale, even if the iten is shoddy and shattered maybe.

C:

5 - I would like a graphic and easier wayt to stablish uniforms, and range for uniforms. For example, the colonist mentioned above could be allowed to wear whatever he wants as long as is within this group of itens and properties

I dont even know how to start a mod like this, but I think it would improve the game a lot.

I don't think anyone will honestly be able to create A, sorry. It's probably possible, but the pawns wouldn't even be made to be displayed from the front. It would require custom artwork for all the current pawn textures and items. This would be massive, doubt they'd even release it by the time alpha 13 came out.

I've actually been toying with some ideas similar to A for a while. Apparel graphics aren't the problem, can just borrow the 'on floor' graphic from apparel.

The problem as far as I'm concerned is that the RPG style paperdoll equipment screens typically have a set number of slots for equipment to go into, and only have one layer. E.g. there's head, hands, chest, legs, feet, and a trinket + some rings slots. In rimworld, any (combination of) bodypart(s) can potentially be covered with equipment. Vanilla doesn't do this, but apparello for example has items that cover the left hand specifically. Power armor covers the entire body, etc. To make things worse, there's three layers of equipment - onSkin (underwear, basically), middle, and shell (armor, typically). Any single item can cover any number of layers and equipment slot. Finally, bodies aren't pre-defined, they can be modded in XML. That means that the number of available slots can also differ, and creating a static ragdoll is pretty much out of the question (if it's going to be compatible with other mods, which I want it to be if I'm going to do this). Dynamically creating a ragdoll is weird, because there's no positional info. E.g. there's nothing in the defs that says legs attach to the bottom of the torso. That means it'd end up just being a list of unordered item slots, which I personally think will be worse than the system is now.

I've been unable to think of a good way to graphically present all this in a way that is not a huge UI clusterfuck. I'm very open to ideas and sketches of how you imagine this kind of thing to work though!

Fluffy, Im so glad you asked!

My idead is to keep things simple, I just want a better way to manage outfits. I spent the better part of this day trying to come up with an example. Im not a graphics designer but i think I acomplished something here. Take a look.

As you will notice, I also dont know how to put the picture in the post, i can only attached it.

The thing is, i dont need to see the picture of the pawn update automatically when you drag and drop an item (that would be cool, but is unecessary). The pawn would display as it displays in the colonist bar from edb interface. And when you gave him an order to change clothes he would go to inventory to do it, and the picture would be updated.

The representation on the attached file also lacks the description of the items. Names, Quality and Hitpoint, it should display it. I also would like to see infusion descriptions.

Tell me what you think. Its simpler than it sounds.

I understood your point on mod compatbility, but the way the game works now, if someone introduces a alien type of character you wouldnt be able to see if he will need two pairs of boots.

One idea is to create a GUI (see attached file) for each race.

The point here is make the clothing system managable and enjoyable. Also to make it understandable. I for one get tired of maaging seasonal clothing. This interface could help us to block a certain layer of clothing, or even define types of clothing that a slot can have for a particular colonist.

Come on mod people! I know we all want a more rewarding and imaginative way to manage apparel!

Let´s see a raise of hands.

There I fixed it a bit! ;D

Edit:
The thing is it's really complicated as Robert said
there's the three main layers for body apparel and one for the head layer
OnSkin
Middle
Shell

each layer of the three could potentially hold like 6ish(?) items
torso, shoulder, arms, hands (could be separated to left and right), Legs, Feet

so you'd need the kind of inventory slot that reads the items coverage from each layer and each bodypart group and then highlights slots you can put something else in that doesn't clash with any of the layer/bodypart coverage of the previously worn item

or something similar

maybe something like this for instance

Edited my post a bit =P thing is you can plop a glove for both hands on three different layers
Edit: oh and they *do* smell like cheese, if that was what you were concerned about!

Shinzy, that's a pretty amazing solution, and should actually be doable (as long as we're talking about a single pawn, setting up outfit restrictions with multiple options is a whole different matter).

This just got bumped up a few spaces on my 'might do' list :D

Fluffy!!!

We need you here! With all the clothing and apparell mods going on, including the ammo thing from combat realism this would be a great time to launch a mod like this.

Have anyone made any progress with it?

Boy, I wish I was a modder...

Well,

I dont want to turn this into a discussion of weather I will be able to mod or not. Im sure I could if I spent the right amout of time studing it. But i chose to invest my time in other areas of interest. I hope that doesn´t unqualify me for asking and suggesting for mods.

I think the questions here are simple. First: Does people think the gameplay would be better with a better unit management system, with a better ui, and thus a better in depth view of the uniforms and apparel you are deseginating for your pawns?

Second: Is it possible, with a feasable amount of a modders work to produce such a mod?

And thrid: What could we do as a comunity to get the support of modders, given that we would like to see that?

Master Modders of the Universe.

I havent forgotten this. From time to time I will encourage you to make this a mod. Not becouse Im winny... NO!It is  Becouse I believe in this system.

We are seeing the number of apparel mods grow every day. @Shinzy just updated the Apparelo 2. Alien races, new animals, new equipment new everything.

This would be a great mod, to play with your pawns indiviadually, spending time arming them, customizing possible outfits for every situation according to their wardrobe.

The modifications we have now, no offense, do the job but they dont actually make it fun for dressing the pawns. Imagine the possibilities...

I believe that this would be a @Fluffys mod, his mods do a tremendous help and add a lot of fun to the game. But I wish at least we could see a prototype and see what people think.

I have not forgotten either! It's just that I have work, family, friends and a whole lot of other mods to get to :(.

Oh, and I also re-installed factorio, which was a huge mistake.

First and foremost: I think a mod like this would improve the gameplay experience a lot!

BUT: it would be rather useless without the pawns getting some "sense" of equipment-ownership (different outfits and loadouts, lockers asf) that lasts over map-exits (current mods seems to have problems with this), and a more robust inventory-infrastructure (again mods seems to have problems with items dropping to floor).

On top of this the current "layer"-design needs improvement to force different mods to be more compatible with eachother in terms of how items replace, complement or augment each other.

TLDR: I think its more of a "equipment-and-inventory-infrastructure" software design problem then an UI problem.

pawn control (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=26618.0)

Mod Desc

A RimWorld mod that allows bulk assignment of animals to zones and colonists to outfits (or drugs) in one single action. Setup different policies and switch at will.
Annoyed by manually having to set animals to safe zone with no master when raided? This mod can help you!
You wish to have different outfits policies by season or by incident? This mod can help you!

This is a simple mod to solve a simple problem!
This mod depends on the HugLibs library mod.
This mod avoided messing with vanilla code at all costs (so it will be easier to maintain :))

Save compatible. You are free to add and remove this mod at any time.

Have fun!

Thank you tonsrd, I already know about this, and i use it a lot with SK Hardcore. But what we are talking here is more friendly and immersive UI for controling outfits.

But thinking about it,  the problem would be the need for ownership.

Ahh yes factorio the most complex yet simple game to get the grasp on I can understand fluffy how factorio can effect ones mindset since of its addictive complexity. Also If you want this mod created maybe help out a different way then doing the coding of mod making such as the art aspect to speed things along. Also it's not that hard as long as you grasp the information and take your time in the coding part of mod making.
