Nightlings (Vanilla Friendly Animals)

"A large deformed beast with rows of quills on its back.
The rim is a violent place and the dead are a common sight. But over the years,
disturbing reports of ravaged corpses started to increase in surprising numbers, all gut-wrenching and skewered with spikes.
Each dawn shedding light to the aftermath of the night before. The locals soon learned to fear the dark, and the nightmares within them." Hi,guys!
I made my own Mod for the "Nightling" based on A Friends (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=34197) work on "Vanilla Friendly Animals" (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=17087.0).
I have the permission so I think its ok till skullywag (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=13346) will releases the official Mod with all the other animals.

Now to the facts:
- spawns naturally in Boreal Forests, Temperate Forests and Arid Biomes rarely in groups of 1-3.
- thrives in temperatures from [-65°C] - [+50°C]
- has a toxic bite similar to the cobra
- Carnivore and hunter
- has a juvenile stage
- lifespan of 15 years
- lays eggs. 1-2 every 10.5 days which hatch in about 15 days.
- trainable
- you can get it from traders
This is my first mod and I'm not a native speaker so please be gentle ;)

the sprites look amazing! can't wait to add them to my next colony.
Good work! :)
Nice, you mind if i pull this into the main Alpha Animals pack before i release (im close), ill credit of course. Happy to chuck what I have on Github if youd like to contribute?
looks really good, nice work! =D
@skullywag
sure you can do ;) I'm not sure If I would be a big help for I'm really new to modding and not sure how grithub works :-\
Dude you did an extermely good job, the textures are extremely good, superior work!
i wish rimworld was like that picture.imagine rimworld + don't starve + darkness mod
EPIC
Cant wait to try this out :D
You did an amazing job on the sprites, I have to saw it's some of the best artwork I've seen in mods. It definitely feels like a vanilla part of the game.
It'd be nice if these creatures are active in low-light areas and are nocturnal.
sticking with this since one of the animal on skullywag Vanilla Friendly Animals mod is not a animal i would want to face
Feel I should add, as cool as this mod is, the mod author isn't the one who made the textures, that would be A Friends (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=34197) who made them for the in development mod: "Vanilla Friendly Animals" (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=17087.0).
Dont the modder told that?
Neat
I just started a new colony. But I will add this in to my list of mod for the next one. It looks good.
cant get it to work

Yea it can, but it's wildness is at 80% so it'll take a while.
Despite the story at the begining of the OP those Nightlings looks kinda adorable :P
Gonna try it out.
Can this be added into pre-existing game saves? I really want this in my permadeath game save!
Edit: Also does the Nightling spawn in the Desert?

Arid biomes are deserts, you can find this information in the main page of the mod.
The nightlings dosent seem to spawn in temperate forests. When I looked in the Mod Help in the main menu the information about nightlings clearly mentioned only arid and boreal biomes.

As you can see it clearly states Nightlings dosent spawn in Temperate Forests so the OP is incorrect. Also I was playing in this biome for 3 in-game years and no Nightlings were there.

I have A13 huge modpack from here + turret, robots, clothes and couple of little mods on my game. Works fine with my save.
Nice Mod!
It's my starter pet in my new colonie. ;D

this is interesting. which mods do you use and in which order? . There can be a problem when there are other mods which messing around with the spawningrate of animals.
would biome spawn tweak ruin the spawn for the nightling?
I'm on that Problem, but for now: yes!
There can be Problems with mods that are using the biomes def :/
Ive responded to your PM Turell, you can add biomes to the racedef but its bugged in core right now which is the sole reason i havent release alpha animals for A13, it is however fixed in A14, or you could use the detour i added to CCL, I however have chosen to wait even though i added the fix to CCL.
You heard the man! I'll try making a CCL modversion and add it to downloads. If you don't use CCL you'll have to wait till A14 for this to be fixed :/
i have an idea "hide in the dark", when the cell Nightling is in has less than 10% bright level, Nightling wont show itself.
basic coding idea:
check the cell every 1 second, when the bright level is below 10%, the texture of Nighling wont be appear or changed to a empty transparent texture.
the idea is from my ninja mod attempt long ago(too little time and skill to realize it), it may fit this mod well.

Check its in the latest CCL release, im not sure 1000101 has released since i added it.
Awesome mod and awesome art (very vanilly friendly).
Keep up the good job plz
Wont work if you try to generate worlds, , how can this be edited/fixed?
This is rather outdated, thus why it is in the outdated area. It needs to be brought forward to current creature standards to work.
Yes, exactly, I want to know how update it to the current stable version
I started by comparing the older version to creatures in the newer version.
Look at the different sections of the def files and see what you don't need to change first, then work on what does need changing.
If the older version has a separate def file for kind and creature, you should be able to combine them into a single def. You can also add a section in the def file for the biomes that the creature spawns in.
Hope that points you in the right direction. If you need a little more help, feel free to pm me. I can't say I am good at modding, but I am figuring out how to update creatures pretty good.
A17 update Download in attachment ;)
Update notes :Quote- Update target version in About.xml
- Merge PawnKindDefs and ThingDefsRaces files like in Core
- Update code in <Verbs> node where vanilla is now using different values
- Update eggs code
- Remove old biomes files and instead using patches to insert animals in all biomes
