Title: Randy Being Randy...
Post by: The-MathMog on May 25, 2016, 07:48:41 PM
So, this colony has been going for a while, and pretty much without any huge dangers. The beginning was a bit rough as it can sometimes be, when multiple diseases strike, causing a multitude of pawns to have mental breakdowns.. A long time has gone without much.
..
But now randy is turning up the heat... And I like it.

So, it started 5 days ago (ingame). Where a toxic fallout started. Nothing too bad I thought, as I have my base designed in such a way, that I can quickly create a roof over my outside crops.
A day or two later, a man-hunter pack arrives, consisting of 67 boomrats.. No problem, as I am inside anyway. Though... The traders that were camping outside didn't do too well...
When the rats started to die of hunger and toxication, they caused quite some fires. Still manageable.

Then, a heatwave hit, with temperatures up over 60 degrees. Still manageable, but then...
How about a solarflare?! What you need the most during a heatwave..

Aaaand, just to top off the pizza-pie of onslaught, a goddamn psychic ship then falls from the sky!! All events happened in a range of 4-5 days!

Hope you guys are being safe out there, because it's a dangerous life, living on a rimworld!! But it's a fun life as long as it is going!

All of the above can be seen in the picture.. Though the temp has fallen a bit luckily!

Soo, what cascade of events, have randy thrown at you guys, that made you think "this can't get any worse", and then it actually turns worse? ;)

Sappers show up just as I crack a psychic ship while majority of the colony was ill with flu and sleeping sickness.  Sappers also took ship to less than 50% with a rocket launcher dude that got lost.

That is one unlucky timing too! Sometimes you wonder, if the game is programmed to inflict events in situation like that :D haha

My experience with A13 Randy is that he takes a loong time to wind up (1 year at least). But once he does, it's complete mayhem. I wonder if this is intentional?

Sometimes maybe. But I HAVE had some intense incidents in the first few months. For me it just feels like, that there is either, a LOT of time between events, and then when events happen, a multitude happens at almost the same time.
Almost like the events are in clusters or something.

In my experience Randy is either really nice to me...or a complete douche-canoe within a week.

This is the most recent act of Randy......

A solar flare and an eclipse at the same time.

Although this can happen, but I would think that object that is responsible for the eclipse would also "shield" the planet against the impact of the solar flare.
But I could be wrong.

Here I thought this thread would be about Randy being extremely sexual in some way.

You can also have 2 raids come into the map from the same spot.
The first one preparing and the second attacking immediately.
Things would have been dire, if those 2 factions didn't hate each other.
It was a nice profit.

I remember a time where I was being sieged by one faction, only to have an enemy of said faction (still an enemy of me) spawn a raid to attack immediately which happened to pass through the siege camp of party A.
It was a slaughter. And the colony lived until the next raid.

There was also several times when a tribal group removed some Mechaniods for me. Cheers guys :D

Randy can be a bro sometimes.

I don't have the best luck clearing out hives sometimes. They get out of hand and then there are 100 insects running about. Then they mine out into the wild blue. That's when things get fun. Mechs and people both hate bugs with a passion (I'm convinced mechs were originally exterminators).

Its hilarious watching a multi day war between insects and another group. I just picture my colonists sitting back, sipping tea, commenting on the explosions, screams and gunfire.

Then again Randy can be a jerk sometimes too. The last time this happened he made me wait a year before another raid showed up. That was interesting. I ended up with a 3 shaped wall trying to keep the bugs out of the main base.

I've had that one happen too! It feels sooo good to see the raiders annihilate each other, before even getting close to you!

Same with, shitting a psychic ship to let the mechanoids out, just as a raid is passing by it! ;)

Unfortunately, the faction relationships on my current map doesn't allow much of this :(

This is when, digging and building random structures in mountains, away from your mainbase, can actually prove profitable. They are far enough away to annoy you, and can sometimes dig out and prove a challenge to anyone wandering nearby!
You can also close off said mountain, and install coolers. With enough coolers you can kill the hives themselves, and kill off all of the insects (except of the mega-spiders mostly, as they have a lower cold-tolerance)

Hehe, it's weird how the lack of raids, can actually turn into a bad thing! ;)

Sounds painful.  You might want to see a doctor for that.  ;)

Yep, Randy being Randy.  ;D

Well i use a whole ton of mods in my playthroughs, mostly to make battles harder, surviving harder but adding some neat stuff to the game..
i thought my colony was well defended until this happened.
(im playing on a Cannibal Only playthrough, only recruit cannibals or robots, take prisoners for possible slaves?)

Link to several photos of the outcome: http://imgur.com/a/ZzD3d
Sneak Peak:

After i captured several people of their faction and healed them all up...prison break, i lost all but two people xD (prob going to reload a save, but it was hella fun and intresting)
If some people want a tour of my base and some info on the mods, let me know i can make a quick video!

actually ive never had one of these moments with randy, (usually play rough or what ever the one after base builder is since i take my time and sometimes cheat a little). i think the weirdest ever would have to be a man hunter (wargs) come during a heat wave (very boring few days for the colonist)

Drop pods, containing husky meat; elephant manhunters; infestation.
One after the other.
I had so much meat, I put my dogs in the fridge.

It was -30 outside and Randy sent me a solar flare. Had to panic-build a ton of campfires to keep my crops alive overnight.

The solar flare ends and Randy sends me a crop blight right after ...

???

Reminds me of my first toxic fallout event. I had huge outdoor gardens and little surplus power. I panic-built a geothermal (had *just* researched it), along with sun lamps and doors (they support roofs and don't block light when open) and power lines. By careful pawn rotation I was able to save my most important stuff. Hooray!

Randy: "Blight falls, every crop does" :P

Randy can also be your best pal.
After a long bionic part starvation, a trade caravan, full of legs and eyes and arm passes by.
I emptied my reserves of silver.
The trade caravan moves away.
RAID!
The pirates spawn in front of the caravan. Huge fight ensues:2 pirates prisoner, all my silver back, relation with faction improved by saving the pawns, a bunch of component and a couple of dead muffalos.
Thank you Randy!

^ True that.  I had a wild cougar and a wild bear both attack a caravan as it showed up in fall or winter of the 1st year.  They went for the pack-muffalo and incap'd it, causing it to drop everything it was carrying.  The trade leader ran away, and the caravan guards killed the predators.  I got 2 dead yummy animals plus a ton of silver, 80+ components, etc.  Then I dropped down an animal spot and "rescued" the muffalo back to my base.  I built walls around it and waited for it to expire (make that 3 yummy dead animals!).  The caravan guards didn't seem to mind me looting them or kidnapping their wounded muffalo.  :)  Thanks Randy!

My colony has 7 people and only 3 Medicine I bought from a pirate merchant at a premium price. The rest is herbal medicine and the last time Plague struck, my 55 year old colonist nearly died.

Randy just dropped me 32 Medicine in a single stack.
