Nice music. I may compose some too, and maybe we might join forces in the mod ;)

Someone needs to just make it so you can import music into the game directly. I can think of a few soundtracks that belong in this game: Starcraft 1 and 2's Terran tracks, Rebel Galaxy, at least those 3.

That sounds pretty good! Have you ever experienced any copyright issues on YouTube? If not, I might be tempted to use it in my next LP in A14.

Well, there shouldn't be since I made this song myself yesterday and only shared it on these forums. haha :D

YouTube is a miraculous place where third party companies will sometimes lay claim to original music videos and monetize them because the system is horribly broken. I hope this doesn't end up happening to your song.

God I wish I could be so naive about the copyright system on YouTube :P
On a more serious note : I'd love to know if anyone confirms any trouble with the automated copyright crap, otherwise I'll see for myself when A14 hits

I added a new song, please don't hesitate to write what you think of it!
The song would fit best (imo) right after a raid, but I don't know how to code that.. so right now it can play at any time (not during a raid though)

Unfortunately you cannot be so precise with your mod, you can toggle it to play during the day, night, during raids or on the main menu, but not just after a raid ended

And I didn't check out your soundcloud.  And it's not awesome at all.  ;)

Figure out how to specify when songs are played
e.g. how to play a song after a raid is over(Stay strong) or when you land(Lovely day)

I'm not sure how to call a song after a raid, but a daytime song is easy enough.  Here's a sample of a daytime song defined in RimWorld1135Win\Mods\Core\Defs\SongDefs\Songs_Gameplay.xml

Code ("Daytime music definition") Select

<SongDef>
<clipPath>Songs/Relax/Noodles_Planetfall/Noodle_Planetfall_a</clipPath>
<volume>0.65</volume>
<allowedTimeOfDay>Day</allowedTimeOfDay>
</SongDef>

Also, see my signature for an A13 XML Auto-Documentation link, which may or may not be useful.

Here's a breakdown of the <SongDef> tag elements as used in A13 vanilla:

<defName> - Optional.  The game's internal name for this song.  Must be unique.  Used to be able to play this specific song.  If not specified, it can't be called explicitly but the game will use it randomly as appropriate.

<commonality> - Optional.  I assume it defines how common/often a given song is played.  It's a decimal number.  Used only once in the vanilla code for the Ice_Shaman track (value is 2.0).  Not sure exactly how it works.  The Ice_Shaman SongDef is unchanged since A12.  This tag is either very specific in its use (which is my guess) or else it just got forgotten about.

<volume> - Optional.  Song volume as a decimal.  Decimal number, between 0.0 (silent) and 1.0 (full volume).  If not specified, 1.0 (full volume) is assumed.

<playOnMap> - Optional.  It's a true/false value that specifies if the song should be played on the game map.  Assumed to be true if not specified.  In Vanilla, it is only used to designate 2 songs as <playOnMap>false</playOnMap> - the EntrySong when you load RimWorld, and the EndCreditsSong if you beat it.

<clipPath> - Required.  Tells RimWorld where the song file is.  Relative to the mod's path.  Obviously you've already mastered this one!

<allowedTimeOfDay> - Optional.  If absent, the song can play during both day and night.  If present, it must be either Day or Night (self-explanatory).

<allowedSeasons> - Optional.  Specifies what Seasons the song may play during.  Contains a list of <li>SeasonName</li> elements.  Only used once in Vanilla - the Ice_Shaman song of course - as follows:
<SongDef>
<clipPath>Songs/Relax/Ice_Shaman</clipPath>
<volume>0.97</volume>
<commonality>2.0</commonality>
<allowedSeasons>
<li>Winter</li>
</allowedSeasons>
</SongDef>

I assume multiple seasons could be used by adding more <li></li> blocks.  Which would mean you could specify 2 or 3 seasons a song is only allowed in.

<tense> - Optional.  If omitted (or false, I assume), it plays only during normal gameplay.  If true, then it plays only during "tense" moments (raids, etc).

I suspect that being able to call a song after a Tense event has concluded would require C# modding, which is beyond me.

=================

EDIT - So I guess I can't read today.  I thought you said "or during day" not "or when you land".  Sometimes I'm special like that.  ^_^  Oh well, I'm going to leave this post in case it's useful.  Or funny.  ;)

I didn't know about the tags either. My auto-doc just pulls together all the Vanilla uses, and I make assumptions/observations from there. :)

jst compare your drum sound with vanilla and u will see what i don't like about it

Im a drummer and in metal drums are probably my nr1 thing to judge

You still didn't tell me what you think is "wrong" with the drums. If you're a drummer you must be able to be more specific.

I know the drums aren't 100% alike the soundtrack but that's not what I'm aiming for and I like how the drums are now, especially in the second song. If you check my soundcloud you can hear that in most of my songs, drums are really loud and the leading factor, this is just how I like to make my music and this mod was basically meant for me anyway. I can assure you that I'm my biggest fan and I make the music mostly for myself.

If you want me to make a version for YOU, because you seem to be the only one having problems with my drums(that I know of), I'll gladly do it. I'm serious. I know I'm a tad defensive, but you were laughing at my music and I wasn't expecting that from this community lol. Seriously this modding community is probably the best I've been apart of.

nah, I'm really terrible when trying to describe or tell whats wrong with electronic/not natural drums.

I still downloaded and used your mod though, I just wanted to give my opinion

I can agree with you Justas love that the drums don't sound 100% natural, however as a game tune the tunes are perfect in my opinion (well a bit low but that we know already), I'm saying that as a music and metal lover my self if that's any credential to go by. As a game tune, meant to play in the background, to sound nice and atmospheric but not take focus away from the actual game they work very well, this is now one of my must have mods, I can't wait until you fix the volume a bit and add new tunes.

Really great tracks! Not sure about the snare sample and the reverb though, sounds too synthetic. (You can hear the artefacts on the tails)
Apart from that they fit really well instrumentally and melodically.
I would compress everything together more maybe. I know it removes dynamics but in game I think a more flat backing track would stop disruption with other in game sound elements. (as they are generally quite flat also)

I may be wrong of course, just throwing my chips in :).

Haha, I understood about half of that.. Not really good at mastering and compressing and shit like that, that got boring  ::).

It's not actually a snare, they're both tom samples I've edited and added reverb. I don't know, I feel like it always sounds more RimWorldish when I add reverb lol. Not sure what to do to change it tho, not a pro :(

EDIT: OOOH, you're talking about the snare in Lovely Day I think.. I totally understand now, I actually changed that already as some people here were pointing out my drum flaws. I just haven't updated it yet :P

Yes, I figured that converting was a possibility.
After some brief research I found that converting from MP3 to Ogg will reduce the quality quite a bit, as I suspected. That's why this was my plan B.
If he exports an Ogg from his own DAW, the quality will be much better. I prefer high quality tracks :D

A little update:
For now I'm more active on Steam workshop. I already added two new songs there. If you have any questions or requests please add me on Steam :) I could surely give you a midi file or flp file if you use FL Studio.

The reason why I'm not that active on the forums this month is that I got IP banned from the forums(support told me it was some kind of massive spam delivered from my exact IP, I have no idea what kind of spam and they wouldn't tell me) and I need to use a VPN everytime I go to these forums and if I forget it I need to clear cookies for it to work and sometimes that isn't even enough.. It's just a pain so I'll stick to Steam until I move in about a month and then I'll be more active on the forums.

I can't update the mod since I'm using a different computer, latest version is available on Steam workshop. If anyone wants me to update here, please let me know.

PS. I fixed the soundcloud link(I changed my soundcloud name recently)

Your description really down-sells the quality that is on offer here.
What I appreciate the most is that these songs "maybe with the exception of "Rimworld" all merge really well into the original soundtrack.

If anyone wants me to update this mod, let me know. Otherwise I'll stick to Steam Workshop.
Oh yeah, I moved today. Can easily browse the forums again, wohooo :)

It'd be nice if you could update this. I'm lucky enough to have a friend who set up family sharing with Steam so I can download the updated version and then copy it to my Mods/ dir on my install. Or at least post when you update the Steam version and I'd be willing to extract it from my Steam install and upload here (if you'd like).

You should definitely update both on Steam and on a 3rd party like dropbox / mediafire. Not everybody uses Steam...

Having said that, I think this mod is a hidden gem in this forum. The songs are extremely good and fit very well into RimWorld! Good job!

I'm hoping you can help me. I modeled my music mod directly after yours, using music I found around the internet, but I still can't seem to get it to work. This is my first time messing around with XML, so is there something I'm missing? I've been running into a ton of problems both trying to get this mod to work and trying to make it so the music already in the game doesn't play (after 50+ hours I got kind of tired of it). Obviously I have no mods installed except this one. If it helps, all the songs are in .ogg format and range from 7,000kb to 18,000kb.

My file structure looks like this:

Background Music
‣About
‣Defs
‣‣SongDefs
‣‣‣Songs_Gameplay
‣Sounds
‣‣[music files]

Every time I restart, random songs refuse to play. They all still show up in development mode, but the buttons don't do anything. The songs that don't work are different each time.

Also, setting the Commonality to "0.0" for songs in the Core ‣ Defs ‣ SongDefs ‣ Songs_Gameplay xml file does successfully prevent them from playing, but seemed to throw out a string of errors while in development mode whenever a song probably would play, and the window seems to pop up a random number of times (having to close the debug window 1 time, 8 times, 11 times, 13 times, 3 times, etc.). However, restarting after activating my mod did fix this issue and caused several of my added songs to start working (though not Yui10 and One_Day for some reason). I don't remember what the error message was specifically, but it had something to do with 0.0 and random events. I can only assume that's what the game throws out when it tries to play a song but there's literally nothing it's allowed to play.

Each time I have tested it I started a new colony and just let the game run in the background. What I noticed is that if I don't touch anything songs play fairly frequently, but if I play a song from developer mode then songs take a really long time to start up again, but that might just be regular game behavior.

Also, every once in a while my "Select Landing Site" screen will display a gray box where the world map normally is. Going back and using a different random seed doesn't fix the issue. Only restarting does.

Another quirk is that my mod doesn't prompt the game to restart when activated; I have to do it manually. Is there some line of code my file is missing? Something in the About file that should be there? I'm at a loss.

If you could give me a download link, I could easily take a look at your mod. The problems you're describing haven't happened to me, so I'm not quite sure how you've managed to get these errors  :D

PS. The music files don't need to be in .ogg anymore. mp3 works fine as of A14

Yeah, it crashed for me too. The output_log said "OutOfMemoryException: Out of memory". I'm thinking that the files are too big. I'll try to convert the files to mp3

Anyways I got 14 out of 19 tracks to play in-game. The reason the last 5 aren't playing could be the "out of memory" thing, not sure. But it's worth a try!

EDIT: I converted all files to mp3 and everything works fine now. All tracks play in-game and I don't crash anymore  :)

Thanks. I hate that this was such an easy fix. Sorry to take up your time.

By the way, do you know how to make a song play only once, or how to make it play after a certain even without increasing the commonality?

Nice music :) However I had a problem with your mod, it made my game freeze when I closed the game - instead of shutting down it stopped repsonding - probably memory issues related to file sizes. I did not even try the music in game after seeing this, but simply ported the music to mp3 in Audacity and it fixed the freezing-when-closing-game issue. And the songs also work in game fine now:)

I'd like to throw in another thank you for creating this mod, its become one of those "essential" mods that I can't play without.  Your music is too good!  ;D  Unfortunately though it seems like music mods in general are poorly handled by Rimworld right now.  I'm not a programmer so I have no idea if this is something that can be fixed or if it's something that's unavoidable but music mods seem like massive memory hogs right now.  When I combined P-Music with my entirely-too-large modlist, Rimworld would crash 100% of the time at world-generation.  Thankfully though I read TrueDestroyer's post (thanks! ;D) and downloaded audacity and converted all the files to mp3's.  This cut down on memory use by over 500 mb!  I don't know if those results will be the same for everybody, but for anybody having trouble or experiencing crashes using this mod I highly recommend to follow TrueDestroyer's advice and convert everything to mp3's.

Yeah, go ahead! Sorry for not being active on these forums, I've just been updating on steam and actually added a few new songs and converted everything to mp3 as you guys said. I can always make another version where I render the songs in a little lower quality so the file size wouldn't be too big. Just let me know if there's anymore problems with other mods.

Yeah, zhenter figured out why this is happening.
All the songs I add are decompressed in memory all of the time because that is the default load type for sounds in RimWorld (60mb of mp3 decompressed seems to be about 1,5gb)
There is a possibility to change the load type in Unity to compressed in memory or streaming. Both of these load types would solve the memory problem and decrease the memory usage significantly. Only problem is that Tynan hasn't given modders a way to easily change the load type of sounds. I'm waiting for him to respond to this.

Also, don't blame Unity :(

This is just what rimworld lacked, more variety of music to listen, it gets dull hearing the vanilla songs over and over again, I appreciate your work!

Alright, Zhentar said you need the dummy to load the assembly on time. However, you shouldn't keep it separated as that causes an error.

It seems that you were out of memory. I am not that experienced of a modder to know a good fix. Since my mod adds a lot of data when uncompressed, you could try using like half of the songs and see if it works.

I believe the reason why it works when you load a saved game is because the game shouldn't load the songs until played, but when you generate a map it somehow does load them all. Just taking a guess.. I'm not sure how to fix it. I do know Tynan is changing how songs load in A16, might try and wait until then.

Why you don't use .ogg songs? convert them to ogg and it will use less memory blocks. I think the setted blocks are for.. Look at resources folder, all musics are storage inside the .unity assets. That's only possible with .ogg as i think.

ps: My PC have 4.5GB available... Its a crash of storage memory blocks. eg:
1 vector int[2] support 8Bytes and you trying to storage 16Bytes, Data loss, Crash.
I will try to fix converting to .ogg and making it smaller. I think there is a limit per music that the rimworld can hold until crash.

.Ogg are core compatible with the rimworld, so no bugs anymore. And it will run in any platform windows/linux rim world versions with no lag.

If you have the MusicMemoryFix assembly, and the InjectorDummy def is the first def loaded for your mod, then songs will use very little memory. Otherwise, the only thing you can do is limit how much music you use; the game decompresses them during load so the file format doesn't matter.

.OGG no bug here.. .OGG is standart for all games... its better compression and its load faster..
Look... Mp3 codecs are heavier and not compatible with linux systems that don't have mp3 codecs.
.OGG is standart and Its used inside the core library. Test yourself. I added alot of musics and there's no problem anymore with mapgeneration bug. Yea .OGG
Oh.. and there's no  lag anymore.
Also.. musics with more than 8MB is working with .ogg.. Test yourself Perppen

This may be a stupid question but... the different files have different songs, right? Or am I supposed to only use v8? You make no mention of that in the first post so that got me a bit confused.

You could have read the changelog to instantly figure this out. You only need the latest release.

Oh, yeah, I always forget to read that, thanks.
But tbh I wouldn't expect instructions on how to use the mod to be there.

Yeah, this mod adds all the songs. I do have different mods for each song on Steam for those who only wants one or two songs. I could add it here too if anyone asks for it. You can also just move/delete a song you don't want from the mod folder if there's one song you don't like.

Trust Me (https://soundcloud.com/pettersumelius/trustme) (A song for A16) might be my last song for this mod as the song amount is almost as large as the OST and I want to move on to different kind of music. I will of course update this mod for every new Alpha and release. (for my mod that isn't much work)

If anybody knows a good game that lacks in the music department, let me know and I might take on another project. This has been an awesome, eye-opening experience and I thank you all for your amazing support and kind words. I would never have made more than one song without this amazing community! I have seriously been thinking about a career in music, because this is one of the few things I actually enjoy doing. My studies are sooo boring. I don't even care that my degree could make me "rich", I just want to do something I enjoy and find meaningful. I just need a roof, some food and my computer :)
Another reason why I'm "retiring" this project is because I'm leaving for compulsory military service in a few weeks.. Wish me luck!

I've updated the mod for A16 (changing the version number and recompiling the Music Memory Fix with the A16 binaries.)

Enjoy.

Peppsen, I notice your MusicMemoryFix.dll has a last modified date of October 28th. I'm still trying to check with Zhentar if it's even still necessary, but in the download I provided above I recompiled it for A16. Please use that for your mod in the meantime.

Hey, I hate to bag on one of your songs, but I notice that v9 plays the song 'Astral' when the game starts up. I really feel like this song holds on notes for far too long, it can be kind of annoying to listen to. When I first started my game with v9 it was holding on the first note for so long I thought the sound messed up.

With the version I gave out, it seemed to work fine and it uses less RAM when in use than without it. I'll change it to your updated one if you think it's necessary.

I was already sceptical about adding it and asked for feedback on Steam, nobody really mentioned it so I left it there. Since the feedback now is negative I'll take it out

It might not be necessary, then. I just think it's good practice to recompile for every build just in case. But if you do change to it, test it, because you might have different code than I have access to (I got the source code off Zhentar's reddit and I don't know if he changed it).

Awesome job, hope you keep this updated because the current RimWorld music hasn't been changed or added onto for so long. XD

Interesting. I'll have to take a look because it shouldn't be needed in A16 at all.

I tried again without it and it used less RAM than the first time around. It might not be my mod that changed it, maybe it was something else. I already took it out from the Steam version since it was causing problems, I'll probably take it out here too

To be honest the music here is good, but not good enough for my tastes. It hit's the right tone (western) but I prefer something different. I was using it months ago but found the music started to get very repetetive- since then you have added more tracks and I can see your improving. Maybe consider a redux of the first song, which had some vanilla soul

I appreciate your feedback and I can agree with you somewhat. Some of my songs were a bit forced and didn't create them as naturally as the first song. I'm glad you tried it out!

haven't tried this mod yet but it looks good, you mentioned samples in your OP and i started to wonder if you might want some ukulele sounds to play around with, or even a song (just so long as its not in the key of E, that key isen't easy to play on the ukulele)

Aww, I rather liked Astral, even if it felt long. Always made me think of open skies and barren plains, when the sun rises on a new day. Made it even more special when it was one of the first songs upon popping the first escape pods. Like opening your door and just seeing the Australian Outback first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee.

Hello, I posted a post with my output log attached, it didn't appear so I guess there is some kind of moderating going on to check so it's an oki file. However I've been a fan of this since it was under development and have been using it since then, I have however not been playing the game much recently, now I do. This however caused me to run into some issues, freezes in-game and while checking my output log I found thousands of lines of errors like these:

Request: Can you create a mod that is focused on Medieval era music? This is very lacking for those of us who want an immersive medieval experience. Although, some of your current songs already fit well with Medieval themes. Just want More! lol

Hi SuedKAT, I just saw your post. We don't auto-delete attachments (unless it's a rather old post) so I'm not sure what happened in your case.

If you haven't already, try removing the mod altogether (not just disabling it), and play without it for a few minutes. Make sure to save the game so the save file is updated without the mod. Then download and install the mod again. The freezing you're experiencing is from the mod generating so many errors, and a fresh install like I've suggested might help fix that. If that doesn't work, please tell us what version of RimWorld you're running & what operating system you use.

When ever I remove this mod those vanish. I was at first thinking that it might have something to do with me playing on an old laptop at the moment due to my main rig being repaired, but I see a significant performance improvement when the mod ain't loaded. Any ideas?

Regards
SuedKAT

Hi SuedKAT, I just saw your post. We don't auto-delete attachments (unless it's a rather old post) so I'm not sure what happened in your case.

If you haven't already, try removing the mod altogether (not just disabling it), and play without it for a few minutes. Make sure to save the game so the save file is updated without the mod. Then download and install the mod again. The freezing you're experiencing is from the mod generating so many errors, and a fresh install like I've suggested might help fix that. If that doesn't work, please tell us what version of RimWorld you're running & what operating system you use.

Thanks for the reply, mine is a bit late as well and no idea what happened to the attached file. At the time I was using the latest version of Alpha 16 and I believe I was using win 7 (use multiple OS on multiple computers due to work so a bit hard to keep track). I had the same issue on 3 different computers.

Now though I've updated to Alpha 17 and hope this mod will be updated and that I once again can use it without any issues since I must admit that after about 800 hours playing the standard tunes start to become a bit... repetitive ;)

I love this mod!

The RimWorld music is lovely, and your additions improve upon it well. I think it fits the RimWorld theme just right.

Thank you!

This mod is absolutely amazing. Props to all the artists working on it. The tracks are high quality, and even better than the ingame tracks in my opinion.

My favorite is Long Way Home. I always hum along when it comes on.

Definitely agree with this! I have been using this, Verge of the Galaxy, and The Old Gods music pack mods, along with Music Never Stops. I ended up making an A17 version of Old Gods for B18 because the updated version is only on Steam. Anyway I think it's worth checking out, it was a bit different at first, but then I started really liking it, especially for my cult and vampire play throughs. Sometimes when I get a few of the Old Gods songs in a row, I will get into it's vibe, and then when it switches back to the more happy western sounding songs it will always surprise me!

Old Gods https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=34234.0
Verge of the Galaxy https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=30920.0

Also, the guy that published Verge of the Galaxy also publishes Don't Shave Your Head. If you are using any of these three hair mods, Spoonshortages, Nackblads, Rimsenal Hair, then you seriously need to use DSYH. It makes it so that all of your hair looks proper when pawns have headgear on, and it's very professionally made. The author has to go through and edit 3 different versions of every hairstyle, and sometimes I think multiple types per style because of different headgear. Not completely sure on that last bit, but everyone should be using that mod, a must have, I say!

EDIT: Is there a way to see the current song playing? Or has anyone ever come across something like a music player widget mod, if such a thing could exist? Thanks! :)

This mod is absolutely amazing.  Thanks so much for your work.  I've tried other additional music track mods and don't like them - they don't fit with the Rimworld theme.  Your tracks mesh beautifully.  The vanilla game is a bit light on variety of tunes and I was getting bored of them.  Your mod infused my game with fresh life.

I think rkagerer said it perfect it's a breath of fresh air for the game.
Thank you very much for sharing those amazing tracks with us. Your work is very much appreciated! Hell I'm listening to those tracks even outside of rimworld :)

I want to thank everyone for the kind words and encouragement along the way. I initially only composed one song for fun, without the intention of adding it to the game. The whole community was really nice and encouraged me to create this mod, this would have never happened without you guys! After 2 years and 19 songs of my own, I can finally say that I'm done.

Someone once asked me to upload my songs to spotify...

Well now I've done it! :) My RimWorld album should be available on most music streaming services by the end of this week.

Amazing work! Especially i like RimRaid and Code Red. I know you said you are done but.. lets be honest, maybe you will get bored one day and and idea of another song will pop up in you mind. Id love to see 3 or 4 songs with more of a space, sci-fi theme, it would fit amazingly. Once again great work.

Just popped in to say -- wow.  Phenomenal work.  When I started alphabetically, the little xylophone at the beginning of Alive had me thinking that this was just going to be some cheesy RPG-themed music entirely out of place in RimWorld.

I then discovered that you not only have an appreciation of timing and bridges, but also of synthesis, harmony, and mood, all perfectly thematic with the RimWorld atmosphere and feel.

Truly exceptional.  This is definitely staying in my load order!

(Paired with the new music they added in one of the later alphas/betas, I'm going to have trouble telling who did what, too...)

Peppsen, maybe you'll appreciate this. It's my recounting of the events leading up to when I first heard 'Alive' after having downloaded your mod.

My main colonist had just got married to the first woman he rescued. During the first couple of years we had all stayed alive and even rescued her mother, his brother and a few other relatives. We were forming a strong little clan in our mountain base.

A few hours after they just got married we got the raid warning. A group of sappers were coming through our beautiful fortificatons that were the front face of our mountain fortress! All 15 of them with frag grenades. We took out a few of them as they approached but it wasn't enough. They blew their way through the walls of the fortress, killed the mother in law, the brother, carried off the bride and the hero made his last stand with a chain shotgun door cheesing as many of them trying to rescue his beloved before they carried her off. Eventually he was taken down and lay on the ground bleeding out while they walked away. That's when the music 'Alive' started.

Will never forget that adventure and I always use your mod now as it adds the perfect feel to every moment!

The easiest thing to do is turn off all mods except this one and see if it works properly. If it doesn't, the problem goes deeper than load order (try redownloading it). If it does, check your other mods, one by one, to see what's keeping it from playing. Did you install other music mods that might be interfering?
