Title: What's your favorite game soundtrack?
Post by: TronPrime1 on February 20, 2014, 12:47:19 PM
Okay, I thought to myself, what game forum would be best to post this question on? How about the one for a game without a soundtrack? xD

GO!

Assassin's Creed 4 (Brian Tyler)

Hmmmmmm... I've played some games with some really nice soundtracks, but I have to go with Payday 2. Brings me right back into the game every time I hear the assault themes.

I've always been a fan of the Mass Effect trilogy soundtrack. Loved the music in that game.

If we can include games that had radio stations though, my favorite will always be K-DST on San Andreas.

Halo, Red Alert 2 (+ all the other C&Cs), System Shock (both), M.E., Half-Life (all content related) et cetera, et cetera, ad infinitum. I can not really choose one of these, they are all brilliant in their own way. In fact, I should add a few more, the early CoD and MoH soundtracks + Alien Swarm & TF2.

The only soundtrack that I own is the Persona 4 one so I would go with that one. It is damn good.

I've never actually played it, but we have it on the ipod- the bastion soundtrack. When my bf told me it was a game soundtrack I was amazed, they really went all out for it- sounds more like a movie!

I can't believe I forgot Bastion.

If you have the money for it, go pick it up on Steam. Easily among the best $15 I ever spent.

I really need to finish Bastion sometime.

Xenogears, The Cat Lady, and To The Moon. If I had to pick a favorite Xenogears would take it only because it's the oldest soundtrack I still listen to with any frequency. The original OST's composer (Yasunori Mitsuda) also did a couple album's where he revised many of the songs as well, Creid being the most inspired IMO. Interesting fact, Xenogears was originally intended to be FF8 but was deemed too dark, and that's where its budget was cut leading to a heavily abridged second disk.

For this game and any other similar (space themed) I have always chosen to listen to non-descript, ambiance. Symphonies of the Planets. (http://www.amazon.com/Nasa-Voyager-Space-Sounds-Complete/dp/B005FYLPFU/ref=pd_sim_sbs_m_6?ie=UTF8&refRID=17HF58YW2KSCQVSQBHW1)..
It's recordings from the Voyagers on board recording system. Truly a unique experience.

As far as actual 'game' soundtracks..most are uninspired. A few that have any real worth for music's sake....old games like Zelda, and Final Fantasy have their niches. Some current 'soundtracks' I use regularly use outside of the game itself:

1.Endless Space, jazzy space-trance.
2.Legend of Dungeon, kinda a modern 'dance mix' of old 8-bit glory.
3.Tropico, latin salsa.

Otherwise I'll listen to various bands..Galactic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic),  Mudhoney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mudhoney),  The Smiths (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smiths),  Slowdive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slowdive) to name a few.

If only you all knew how many soundtracks I have in my iTunes library. Literally days worth of game soundtracks are there. I would have to say somewhere between Crusader Kings II and Bastion. Another, non-video game soundtrack that I absolutely love is the  Twilight Symphony by the Zelda Reorchestrated Team  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlkIUmn5USg)which, sadly! has disbanded since 2012. Listen to the three and a half hours of orchestra music. Absolutely beautiful.

I've got a few favourites from over the years.

The original Street Fighter 2 arcade had great tunes.
The first Killer Instinct arcade music was mind blowing and covered nearly every genre.
Donkey Kong Country on the SNES was cool, especially the underwater music.
Halo 3 had an epic soundtrack.
Red Dead Redemption's was amazingly atmospheric, understated and perfect.  Probably my favourite of the last few years.

23 replies and nobody mentioned Portal????? The best fucking game music ever created.

The soundtracks of FTL, Byond Good & Evil HD, Mass Effect and RimWorld itself are also in my favorites, but there's nothing what can beat the Portal games.

I'll give you those, but other than that I don't recall much other music in the games.

For some strange reason when I start think about games with great music, I don't really seem to remember any recent games. Perhaps the music really isn't as good, or perhaps they all sound the same to me. Don't know -- There is one OLD game, which I remember to have a superb soundtrack: Shadow of the Beast. (The first one of the series, published ages ago for Amiga).

My favorites are probably Diablo ......
Speaking of, so I was expanding my game music (a mega-list of music I listen to whilst playing stuff), when I thought to try Diablo's Soundtrack absurd amounts up to 300$...really lol. My 1,000,000,000,000 yr old original copy is somewhere out in the old man-cave, now just storage, and my wife's workout room. May need to try to dig it out...

Wow that's crazy! I've still got mine around here somewhere..
Funny story: When I was little I convinced my super religious Grandma to let me install it on her computer by telling her "It's a game where you go to hell and kill the Devil" Instant Okay.

Mass effect and Battlefield Bad Company.
Yep the Bad Company not Bad Company 1.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuHB9QQ8J7U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuHB9QQ8J7U)
DICE put tons of money into the sound part and hired a actual orchestra to record the music.
Too bad the game didn't sell well.
The music from the radio channels are well selected and the sound (not only the music but all sounds) of the entire game is the best within the battlefield series so far.
