Known Issues
- Steam Key is "[order status: initial]"
Order status: Initial means this account doesn't have access to the game. Sometimes one email has leftover initial orders in addition to the good order, and the system sends you the initial order because it's first. You'll get a key, email [email protected]
"Duplicate Key" when entering Steam Key. First, try the key giver again. If it gives the same key, email [email protected] and ask for a new one. NOTE: This applies ONLY to games purchased on the official RimWorld website before July 17. It's been temporarily shut down for later purchasers due to piracy issues. Hello, just registered to report this. I've already checked the link and wrote my e mail. But i only got another sendowl download link and no steam keys yet. Do i have to wait for it or is there a problem right now ?

Good timing. :) I was just expanding the post to include all necessary steps. Read the OP again and see if that helps.
Also, somewhere between steps 2 & 4 you're asked to login to the Steam website, I think. I didn't record that part and don't remember how it happened. If you can tell me, I'll add it to the steps above.
After going through the steam link. You have to login with your steam username and password. After a succesfull login it directs you to a steam page very similar to your getmygame link.
There you have to type your e mail adress that you receive update links.
Then it sends the key to the e mail adress you have typed in.
And on Steam games tab theres an option Activate a product on Steam.
I typed the key i got by e mail in there. And it activated the game.
Then i clicked at the library and installed the game!

I know mine is a relatively uncommon issue, but I purchased rimworld from your kickstarter (What was it 3 years ago now?) and the email I used for kickstarter has since been compromised, I am willing to do anything necessary to prove that I am in fact a legitimate backer. (Who purchased the kickstarter backing in the distant past) Feel free to message me at the email associated with this forum account if you're willing to look into the issue and would like further verification, anything I can do to prove my identity I will do so.

Hi so I followed the steps to get my steam code but when i received the email it did not come with the code but there was my order number and it say '[order status: initial]'. where I presume the code should be. Can you help please?
Give it a few minutes and try again. The system is getting a LOT of requests right now, which is confusing it at times.
@laney3214, I just got an update. "Order status: initial" means the game hasn't been paid for yet on Luedon's end of things. Some cards or payment options are just really slow to go through. In that case, waiting is what will fix it. Sometimes a payment gets kicked back and you'll eventually see it return to your financial account (or not go out in the first place). If you can't tell on your end what the hold up is, email Ludeon support for assistance:

Hi, I continue to get my download links and steam keys sent to me but it just keeps sending me my order# in their place, so I am not able to download alpha 14 or redeem the game on steam. Im not sure if maybe im doing something wrong but i needs the help :D

I'm also having the same issue. I've already sent a support email and just waiting for a reply.
I can only get one email to work and all the others that I might of used say No orders for RimWorld were found under the email ______________. Please check that this is your exact purchase email. It must be exactly the same as you originally bought with, with the same letters capitalized. Try other capitalizations or emails that you might have used!
And with the one Email That worked I get "order status initial" and from what I hear this means I have not paid for the game??? I game of which I have been playing since 2014... I sent an email to the Support email but I just thought a double conformation on here would help, I would really love to play the game and leave a positive review, but I can't Until I get my steam key.

I don't know if anyone else is having this issue, but I click the "getmygame" link and either the supposed "Sign in through Steam" image isn't there or I get an error page saying the website is offline. Not sure what's wrong.

@brucelong, yes, Tynan has stated that you can continue to play the game and get updates through both Steam and SendOwl - provided piracy/abuse does not become an issue.
@AverageWhiteguy, please tell us what the problem is. Did you follow the steps in the first post? Is there a specific email you're waiting for that you haven't gotten? Some other unexpected problem?
Just a heads-up; had an issue where all the steam keys I was sent were basically null or "", nothing. Tried requesting the key once a day for 3 days; today it finally sent the key.

I've followed the directions to obtain my Steam key. I received an email with the download URL but no key. I waited 10 minutes and tried again as suggested. I received another email with no key. I waited tried again and and again received an email with no key :-( I rather doubt that continuing to try will bring different results.
Please let me know what I need to do to get my key.

Due to piracy attempts against Ludeon, Steam keys at this time are not available if you purchased RimWorld from Ludeon on or after July 17. (The goal is to make them available again to legitimate users once the piracy issue had been solved.)
When did you purchase RimWorld? If it was on or after July 17, I apologize but you'll have to wait. If it was prior to July 17, email Ludeon support (see 1st post) for help.
Can I get a steam key after a ludeon purchase if I wait a few months after buying it on ludeon? There's some versions of it only available on steam and I bought it long enough ago that its no longer vulnerable to fraud.
If you purchased from Ludeon before July 17 2016, yes you are entitled to a Steam key. See the 1st post.
hey I followed the steps but I entered the code I got called a steam guard code that appeared in my email into the popup on the steam key page, but now nothings happened. after I entered the code it gave me the option to open steam but I just closed the page because the steam client is already open. I have gotten no new emails and I got rimworld in alpha 8
@killer117, I just saw your post. You *should* have gotten an email with a Steam key. Did you get it yet? If not, try having the system resend it. If that doesn't work, the next thing to check is your email address - did you purchase Alpha 8 with a different email address?

Just a quick question. I can find the original download email from Ludeon in my @live mailbox, but when I try to get a Steam code, ludeon.com won't recognize my email address.
I received the download email on April 4th, 2016. I emailed

I'm not certain how long a response is for Ludeon Support. I'd expect a day or two, depending on how busy that side of things is. Did you get your issue resolved yet?
Ive been having trouble getting my steam key because i dont use a browser to access steam and whenever i do attempt to try i always get login errors. Is there a way to get my key through steam itself? or via email?

The only way to get RimWorld via Steam if you bought it via the Ludeon website is to use the automated system.
The system will not give you a key, it will directly add RimWorld to your library.
If you are having difficulty with the system, I would suggest temporarily disabling Steam two-step verification during this process, as I have seen two-step verification cause problems with this type of automated system before.
If you do this, remember to enable two-step verification again afterwards.
I would also suggest temporarily disabling AD-blockers and popup blockers during this process, as they could interfere.
Help! i'm pat, and I bought this game a few years back, now it's on steam and the email I used to buy it has been hacked, and I cannot access it, but I would like to get my game! i see no other solution, i'l do anything to prove that I bought the game, please help!

Ok so I have an email from SendOwl Downloads telling me that rimworld has been updated. I havent played Rimworld in a while but wanted to start playing it again. The email that I received in December 2016 gives me the link "http://rimworldgame.com/getmygame", but then when I enter my email into the box on the link, it says that no purchases of rimworld have been found. Now I think this is because I changed the email that the game was associated with, but even then, the email that I originally bought the email with, tells me the exact same thing. There was only two possible emails that could have been used and both of them tell me no purchases have been made. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated as I want to play rimworld on steam. Thanks :D
@ Chazy99 - The input fields for your email address on that web page are case sensitive, so you will need to be sure that you typed your email exactly the same as it was when you purchased the game (and/or changed your associated email). If you have already made sure of this, or basically still getting an unrecognised email error, then your best option would likely be to send an email to Michael our support expert at
[email protected] , and explain your problem to him (I'm pretty sure he'll be able to sort this out for you no problem).

@ Drorckan - Yes, if you buy the DRM-free version, you can then register it on Steam for free, and that Steam version is exactly the same as it would be if you bought the game from Steam. So:
Buy from Steam = Steam version only.

@ Thomas - There are no Steam keys for the Name in Game pack. The Name in Game DLC isn't really DLC as there's nothing to download. But Steam doesn't offer any way for developers to offer kickstarter / bonus rewards to players, so developers have to make do with the tools available. Which is DLC. And there was significant demand from players wanting to purchase the Creative Content Rewards that Tynan made them available on Steam in the form of DLC (although the Backstory and Pirate King packs have since been discontinued).
Is your Name in Game character in the game at the moment? You can check for it via the in-game options menu with the "Add name..." option. If not then please check the pinned thread in the Creative Rewards forum for details on how to log into your Creative Reward account and create it.
Bought the game directly from Ludeon studios to help them get more of the profit. Followed the directions to obtain my steam key. Actually received a reply from support an hour after my first email was sent in, yet a day later I still have no Rimworld copy in my steam library.
Just seems silly.
From a technical standpoint, there isn't really a "key" given to you now.
Instead, a third-party service redeems a "key" to the Steam account you log in to, and then choose to link. (Or are already logged in to and choose to link.)
The change from a key system to a third party redemption system was made due to a(n extremely) large number of scams that were committed with the initial Steam key system.
Hello I bought the Rimworld in 2014 from SendOwl downloads On behalf of Ludeon Studios. I tryed to get my copy on steam using the link on the first page of this post. i get the confirmation email followed it to the link on steam signed in and then got a error "Incorrect login". I am on sure if this is trouble on steams end or yours. I am not great with PC to know can i get any help on this mater. I was logged in to my steam account so not sure why it not working.

As far as I know, the *only* places that sell it legit are here on this site and Steam. Anywhere else is likely a pirated copy.

ok, so you know the free beta that you sold to people before the game even got on steam? well, my friend (won't disclose a name because don't want him is trouble) emailed me a file of rim world and has been doing so on every new update. so now I am able to play the game without buying it. is this allowed? if not what do I do? also will the game not work once the full release is out because of steams anti-pirating feater(you know it checks to make sure that steam is installed and that you own the game)

No, that is not allowed, that is pirating.
Also, no it won't stop the game from functioning. The game version purchased on this website (and downloaded through SendOwl), is DRM free, and does not use Steam at all. You can however, after purchasing here on ludeon website, have a copy of the game linked to your Steam account. This does not lose you access to the DRM free version, you have both that AND the version linked to your Steam account.

This system registers your copy of the game directly on your Steam account. It does not give a separate Steam key. Legally, you own one copy of the game for your own use only. This system just lets you access it in several ways, for your convenience.
It will copy it to my steam account, but my email adress is different from my fathers email adress. What can i do to connect rimworld with my steam account and not with my fathers not existing steam account.

Are you saying that your father bought you a copy AND he owns another copy himself? Both registered to the same email address?
For something like that you'll probably need to email the support email address?

Police found that scamer who sold me illegal version and after long time and i get my 30$ back. But it was long torture, 6 months, i was tired enought to forgot this game, must take psychical rest and played another games :).
Now i thinking about buying game again, this time planning to be sure of legality.
I'm pulling up 404-Not Found's when I try to click on the link sent to me by the Ludeon robot through email, as well as some various Ludeon links, like some of the ones on this thread. I'm assuming this is likely a problem with my browser or computer and not the bot, yes?

Yesterday some major services got problems, maybe that hit you too.
If you still got 404 error, maybe your Internet provider block something. Then try to email the support.
