Title: Open Source Software
Post by: John Smith on October 12, 2013, 07:53:32 PM
I was wondering if open source software could be used to develop RimWorld?
Torque 2D http://www.garagegames.com/products/torque-2d as the game engine
Synfig http://www.synfig.org/cms/ + character template plugin http://morevnaproject.org/2013/04/15/character-template-tutorial/ for animation, vectoring and rigging.
Krita http://krita.org/ for drawing.
Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ for Audio Recording.

While they could certainly be used to make a game, a lot of work has already been done on RimWorld. I know it's using the Unity engine, for instance.

I do not understand the purpose of this question.

You could understand the "could be used" part as the OP wanting to recreate RimWorld at home, or something similar.

Or he meant something completely unrelated.
It's the internet, you never know !

I am trying to decide the context. Is he asking if Tynan will use those tools, or if it is possible. I am sure it is possible but it will make the work harder, because generally free-ware open source isn't 100% comparable to the commercial stuff.

I had simply assumed that he was an open source advocate hoping for a new game to use open source stuff. It's the Suggestions forum, after all.

There is an advantage of using open source first you are no longer the towel boy of propriety software http://blog.ninapaley.com/2013/01/03/its-2013-do-you-know-where-my-free-vector-animation-software-is/ You also get complete freedom to use software however you want aka free as in freedom, By using open source software you give back to the community and last but not least it makes modding awesome http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2012/11/27/doom-3-code/1

Quoteyou are no longer the towel boy of propriety software

Since Tynan is making a closed source game for profit, I find this whole argument kind of silly.

Actually you can make a propriety open source game. Aka making the game code open but copyrighting the assets. That way you are free to share the code but can't do much with it since the assets are copyrighted because of which you have to buy the game like the Doom Series didn't you read this http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2012/11/27/doom-3-code/1

Yes, Tynan could potentially have used open source software, but in the current case, this question is irrelevant, he chose Unity a while ago for his prototypes, and he seems to be most confortable with it.

Yes but I was still wondering if it would be possible

on a relevant, but more productive note, here's a suggestion... if the game is ultimately modifiable, how about some mod tools (even if simple in functionality). Potentially even steam workshop integration.

Here is some info about that http://www.xonotic.org/2013/10/about-xonotic-and-steam/?utm_source=anzwix

Even though I'm biased, this "article" brings interesting points.

I'd rather have Tynan managing the whole game development on his own, with no strings attached.
The modability may already be scheduled, if not being worked on, as I suppose it will manage the modules to come.

I take it you haven't checked every thread in this forum ;)
You would have learned that I'm actually biased against Steam and the likes.

Sorry for not having made that clear in the first place (though my second sentence should have hinted that way).
