v1.31b
DescriptionHello guys, this is a continuation of Canned Food v1.2 (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=16788.0). Canned food is an interesting concept and I have, with permission from the original author JuliaEllie and another author milon, decided to take over this mod.
This mod gives you the opportunity to can food, so it won't spoil. These cans are great to have in case of an emergency.
So what's the difference between version 1.2 and 1.3? Well, let me tell you.
As usual you can make canned vegetables or meat by the stove. However instead of using 10 raw food and 1 steel, you only need 5 raw food and an actual can. You can make cans at the smithy for 1 steel each, but you first need to research Smithing and Canning before you can do that.
Since it's easier to can food, I have decided to reduce its nutrition value to 0.25 and the market value. I have temporarily removed the thoughts, when a pawn eats canned food and the soylent green can. I will add these back one day, if I can. :)
This is my first time doing modding, and I have really enjoyed doing this mod, so I would be grateful, if you guys have any feedbacks/suggestions.

Change log
v 1.32 - 03-08-2016
• You now have the ability to smelt cans at the smelter to get 1 steel back. (You still won't get cans back if your colonists are eating or using them for cooking.)
• Added new recipes, where you can make 5 cans and 5 canned foods.
• Increased the market value of the cans. (Cans from 1.5 to 3, canned vegetables from 2.9 to 5 and canned meat from 4.5 to 6.5)
• Replaced <RawTasty> tag with <RawBad> tag. This makes the colonists prefer berries and corns over canned food, if they have to choose one of these two.
• Removed the <Foodmeals> tag from canned foods. (Before the patch, the game considered canned food both as a meal and raw food. Now they are only considered as raw food.)
v1.31b - 31-07-2016
• Made empty cans grey instead of red
• It's no longer possible to make canned vegetarians out of hay.
v1.31a - 30-07-2016
• Time taken to can vegetables and meat has increased from 9 to 14. (Now takes as long as making lavish meal)
• Time taken to craft cans remains unchanged.
• Made cans more distinguishable by their color
v1.3 (Initial release) - 29-07-2016
• Updated to A14
• Made the canned food cheaper to make, but less nutritious
• Cans are now required to can vegetables/meat instead of steel
• Cans can be made at the smithy
• Reworked the texture.
• Researching Smithing and Canning is now required before you actually can make canned food.
maybe you can make it so canned food isnt edible, but you can uncan food too get the can back, and then what is uncanned can be cooked into stuff or eaten.
Are cans recyclable? Because they really should be. Also, adjust can color based on their contents, so it's easier to tell them apart from empty cans(and each other). Also, what does the 0.25 nutrition stand for? 25% of the value of the original food? Because that's kind of damn wrong... you should compensate for ease of their make by making them, well, not that easy to make. Canning food should be relatively time-consuming.
@123nick
This mod is written in XML and as far as I know, it is impossible to uncan food in general. The game doesn't know what's inside a canned vegetarian, even if you know there's for example corn inside it. I can however add potato cans, corn cans, rice cans and so on in the game, but that would, in my opinion, just leave a bunch of recipes and a lot of micromanagement for the users. But let me know if you guys want that.
@Llamageddon
The cans are not recyclable yet. I will try to find a way to make it possible for the people leaving opened cans behind, but no promises.
0.25 nutrition means that it will satisfy 25% hunger of an adult. 1 nutrition will completely fill the hunger bar. So if an adults hunger bar is at 50% then it would make sense for him to either eat 10 raw food (0.05 each), 2 food cans (0.25 each), 1 simple meal (0.85) or better to completely fill his hunger bar.
And you are right about canned food are too quick to make. And I will try to make the cans easier to tell apart, even though I'm no good artist. I will change that in the next update.
Empty should be dull gray instead. As if it were unlabeled. At the distance it's hard to tell it appart from meat.

You're right. Empty cans are now gray instead of red.
Update v1.32 (Steam release)
You can now get the mod at Steam (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=735047411). I've been enjoying making this little mod so far, so thank you guys for your feedback! :D

Any chance of seeing a return of Soylent Green support? I know it's still in the configs, but I'm more thinking about a relevant texture (the old ones don't match the new ones). Veggies are already a green can, so maybe a lime colored can? Honestly, I'd try it myself, but I don't even know how to do that much in Paint. :-[
Cheers.

"credits" as in credits cash or as in acknowledgement ;D
eitherway, thanks for the update, and no sweat - uni comes first
Thanks for the update! Hope uni is going good for you.
