I've been working on a mod which adds some more variety to the animals of RimWorld, most notably those found in the Boreal Forests, or 'Taiga' biomes. While there's obviously some overlap with other biomes, that's the main focus of the mod. I'm trying to remain as vanilla friendly as possible- graphically, balance-wise, and in animal design. Currently I have eight new animals.

Black bear
Exactly what you'd expect. Smaller, more common, and less dangerous bear.
Fisher
A dog-sized mammal related to weasels. Very vicious and very wild.
Horse
Just your typical friendly horses. You can't ride them, unfortunately.
Jackalope
A type of rabbit with pointy antlers protruding from between its ears.
Woolyhorse
A bizarre omnivorous horse that can live in incredibly cold climates.
Ermine
A cute little stoat with an almost pure white winter coat.
Megabadger
A very large and incredibly dangerous predator. Best to simply avoid.
Chipmunk
A tiny critter that serves mostly to be eaten by hungry predators.
Wooly Rhino
A throwback to the cold-weather rhinoceros of the ice-age.
Sizes shown are not accurate representations of size comparisons in-game.

A Dog Said... compatibility patch (https://mega.nz/#!ZwczARoB!5_hY-PwHh0vDNxQxDvVvFcRv16NS6qvVCmw_eGFuXKk)
Thanks to kaptain_kavern for helping with this one. I may simply integrate this compatch into the mod and make ADS required to use Taiga Creatures in the future.
Changelogv0.1 - Initial release. Added blackbear, fisher, horse, jackalope, woolyhorse
v0.2 - Lots of cleanup, added ermine, megabadger, and chipmunk. Added compatch for A Dog Said...
v0.3 - Added Wooly Rhino
Suggestions and feedback are more than welcome.
I have to say, these look really good (in-game too), they blend in perfectly with vanilla animals. Will definitely start in a boreal forest now with my next colony, keep up the good work!
Those are some really nice assets, keep up the good work. I especially like the jackalope, makes me think of a planet entirely inhabited by fearsome critters.
Cannot wait for these! They look so like vanilla animals its great! (similar art style)
These look great! They perfectly capture the vanilla style while still looking better than the default animals. My only criticism is that (for me) the horse's legs are a little long for the vanilla style. I would love to see how the horses look with a little bit shorter/rounder legs. Everything looks great though and I'm excited to see what else you make! ;D

Yeah, I'll have to shorten them a bit. Wasn't really sure how long they ought to be.
Thanks for the comments guys. Glad to hear they're looking mostly as intended.
Oh man that bear look both vanilla and badass. Take it from someone that cannot draw even a straight line ;D
Really like it and also about time we get horses :P
Great job
You need to team up with the other animal mod(s) and make one big animal mod!
Also my sudgestion from the other thread.

Maybe in the future when the mod is better developed, it could be integrated into something like that. CK Animal & Plant Pack looks like it is following close to the same standards, so I could see a merge with them potentially happening.
As for the animals you listed, some are definitely on my mind, but I haven't decided concretely. Wolverines and Porcupines are likely, though.
v0.2 testing release now available in the OP.
I havent checked as im not near a pc but is this using the wildbiomes on the racedef to add the animals to the biome? Just checking for compatibility purposes.
Yes, it is. Taiga Creatures should be fully compatible with any mod that does not add creatures with identical def names, as I didn't use a special prefix on them.
Yay an update! Keep up the good work! :D
I made you some woolly rhino art (see attachments). The art needs a bit of cleaning up but it should get you started.
[attachment deleted by admin - too old]
I want these and also add some for arid desert like badger, cobra, lizrd but there's already 1 type of lizrd there, desert toad, javellina, roadrunnerand lastly scorpions its been missin in the arid desert
Hey look what I've
committed done with the .psd/.xcf files you provide (thanks for that ;))
As I'm a complete noob about all of this I'm quite happy on how it looks (I just re-cut a bigger layer with zebra texture the same shape as the horse). But I have completely no idea on how to the face and back version while keeping the impression it is the same animal (on how to draw the zebra's, in which direction and all of that) :p
So, deal with it :P It was more to say thank you for the psd files
The zebra should have vertical stripes on its chest. More like this (http://gallery.yopriceville.com/var/resizes/Free-Clipart-Pictures/Animals-PNG/Zebra_PNG_Clipart_Image.png?m=1445524980).

Oh hey, not bad. I haven't had a lot of time recently, but I'll see if I can work on getting this into the mod sometime soon.

Thank you! I look forward to them!
These are gorgeous. Looking forward to seeing more.
Beautiful artwork :)
Great mod!
I also have an suggestion, what about re-doing the Jackalope texture using a vanilla hare?
I think it would be more vanilla-like.
I'm not 100% happy with the Jackalope graphic, but I thought the vanilla hare graphic was sort of lackluster in comparison to the other vanilla animals, hence why I made my own.

I used your art as a template and have integrated them in the mod. They'll be in the next testing release. ^^

Oh the younger one is too cute :)
The baby is soooo cute! Nice job! 8)

EDIT: Also kaptain_kavern made the code for for my Aurochs art (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=26265.0;attach=16717). If you want to add those too be my guest. Otherwise these can stay as a stand alone mod. Combining just helps reduce the mod clutter. Here is the original post (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=26265.msg275938#msg275938) about them.
Hm, I don't really see Aurochs fitting in. They look too much like modern cows to be unique and don't fit the bill for "taiga creatures".

Dose it help they were around during the ice age too?
Hello! Can I ask you something? I'm currently doing a mod, so, in wich program did you made the creatures?
I made them all using GIMP. If you download the mod and look inside the textures folder of each animal, you'll find the source xcfs so you can sort of see how I did things.
Please update soon! I cannot wait for the woolly rhinos! ;D
Well, I've been working on another and far more complex mod for a bit. So I can just update what I have now. Check the OP.
Awesome! Thank you! ;D
Ok I made some Snow and Rock Rock Ptarmigans (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_ptarmigan). Both Male and Female too. (see attachment) I did not do a baby but I assume you can use the base game baby chick art for both.
Many thanks in advance! ;D
The art below are just an example. The full set is in the WinRAR

Were the Ptarmigans useful?
Didn't get the time to add them, sorry. I'll probably brush up the textures and add them to a 1.1 release. Mostly I feel like I've been sitting on this mod for a while and just wanted to push it out the door at this point since it's quite stable and usable.
I made some Helmeted guineafowl sprites, or guiné as we call it here on brazil. You can use it if you want, I think it fits the mod.
If you like it, I can make the male one.
Yo, you can also consider this as a gift for helping me with my raptor mod. :^)

Those are cool but not very Boreal. Perhaps the Jungle animal mod (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=26265.0) would use them. We seriously need like a Desert or Savanna animal mod too.
No kidding. One of the games I started on a desert, and there is such a lacking of animal variety there.
Great mod, Thirite! The sprites are very high quality and it adds a lot of flavor to the north. I can't imagine making a boreal settlement anymore without this mod! I have a question though, now that we can form caravans, do you plan setting "pack animal" to true for horses, and possibly other large animals like the rhino and megabadger?
Thanks, and yes, that's the next thing on my todo list for Taiga Creatures. I'll be locking this thread though since it's better to talk about it in its 'Release' thread (https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?topic=27694.0).
