Title: IEDs are now awesome?
Post by: Kryptos901 on December 02, 2016, 07:54:10 PM
So, having watched a few youtube videos and dug around on the forums, I had the impression that IEDs were useless against crashed ships. So I spent three days (ingame) setting up a massive defensive line, and then set 8 IEDs around it, because the only reason I even had artillery shells was because I assumed they'd work on crashed ships.

So, I have my sniper peek out from the fortifications and shoot the ship. Three scythers pop out, triggering one of the IEDs. All eight go off in a chain reaction, erasing the ship and scythers.

Moral of the story: keep a few artillery shells around again.

...I seriously gotta stop drinking soda and reading the RimWorld forums.  My keyboard can't take the abuse!

Well it appears explosions do more damage to the left. Or at least that's what it looks like to my unscientific mind.

For many many many Alpha's I've been using the following defence set up. The earlier ones were four turrets wide, however the introduction of components meant that was far to expensive to sustain. So I re-worked it to two wide. Yes it takes a little bit of work to set it up again after each attack, but generally it works just fine.
Please note the date, and you'll see why I need such a murderous defence.

Now in this play through I actually had the walls of the explosion fun house one block closer in and I noticed some odd damage pattens, the wall on the left was often destroyed, while the right one was normally left standing. So I moved them outside the blast radius, to save re-building time.

But upon seeing this thread I fired up dev mode in another save and well, tested it again. This time I used Plasteel wall.

So if something is about to explode in Rimworld, stand on its right...

Perhaps The planet has so strong and specific magnetic field it focuses blasts to the west?  ???

Now that you say that, 3 raiders were meleeing my turret and it didnt explode, and it was returning fire. Why? Sorry for the off topic.

Against ships it depends on how many you place and whether they step on it. If they spawn in the IEDs, it can be a great help. Even if they only damage the mechs. But if you don't place enough there is a high chance that they will spawn on the other side of the ship or something.

I think Tynan nerfed the turrets so now they sometimes explode when destroyed instead of always exploding when destroyed. Up till A16 I would build "melee traps" consisting of rock chunks surrounding a single turret in the center of a killbox. The melee specialists would rush the turret, kill it, and then be killed by the explosion because the rock chunks took too long to traverse. I lose some metal, but I kill all the enemy melee troops who would otherwise disrupt the gunline.

Why is everyone talking about A16 as if it had been released?  Are these all beta testers or am I missing something?  (I have my version from SendOwl, btw, not Steam)

Or they maybe just await some bigger changes.
Don't you now the effect of the rumor&hope propaganda ? :-)

hmm.. strange. even in the previous alphas, raiders tend to spread out more which is why explosive traps aren't very effective compared to an actual killbox turret. (depending on how effective your killbox design is, it's also less resource consuming in the long run if you're good at preventing your turrets from exploding)

as for crashed mech ships : a squad of snipers + a couple of shieldbaits + sneaky grenadier is still the most flexible (since it doesn't use up resources and i'm good enough to lead my troops in a way to avoid any injuries)

------

when i read the title of the thread, i was thinking (hoping) there were news about turning IEDs into deployable traps that can be carried in a pawn's inventory. so that rather than needing to "build" it, IEDs would be "crafted" and stored in stockpiles for quick redeployment and other fun tactical stuff.

haha.

This actually sounds like a really good idea.
