In Alpha 3 (408 and 409) the loading time in the menu is extremely long.
It starts with the game itself which takes about 2 minutes to start up and in the mean time it is a black screen and my Windows Taskmanager keeps saying it's not responding, but after 2 minutes it starts up. Then in the menu, it doesn't matter which button I click but it will always load but only 2-5 minutes later. And when select some mods in the mods menu and want to close so that I can play the game it just freezes (can still move the mouse but nothing of the game seems to respond). I don't know what this is and I can only imagine this to be a bug because all of the previous versions worked fine.
I hope this will be fixed ASAP because it makes the game not so fun anymore with having to wait 5 minutes everytime you want to change anything in the menu.
EDIT: I selected some mods in the mods menu and tried to close it, but the game wouldn't respond so I closed the game. Now the game won't even start up anymore.
EDIT 2: Removed all the non-basic mods from the mods folder and the game starts up again but nothing else has changed.
EDIT 3: I reinstalled Alpha 3 + deleted old files etc and now only the mods menu has a long loading time and the game still needs 2 min to load up + mods won't work because the game won't start when they are selected.
Well, I can tell you how to find and turn off the mods so that your game will actually start up again without loading the game in the first place, but im afraid i cant fix your long loading times.
Seems you hit this rare issue:

I've never seen it and only heard of a few people who had it. I'm going to have to do some work to fix it.
Wouldn't this problem have something to do with disk activity and fragmentation and such? Unless, of course, there are players who have this bug and are using an SSD.
No amount of disk fragmentation would make it take that long to load. And it didn't happen in A2. It's a bug.
maybe there just ain't enough ram to run it?
think 8gb of ram is enough ;)
I am also experiencing this issue, let me know if any logs/system specs would be helpful
Yeah, we've seen this bug. I'm going to do a pass to solve it for Alpha 4. It's a tough bug because I can't repro it but I'll put in some profiling output to narrow it down with Evul, who also gets the bug consistently.
Yeah it happens accuationaly for me. It some times stop when I restart and starts again. It's a realy strange and hart to diagnose bug.
I have a threy that it might conflict with with some kind of running program. What programs do you (deadwillrise) run when you get this problem?
I don't have any 'opened' programs but i have some programs running in the background such as: Avast Anti-Virus, Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and NVIDIA-Settings but nothing more.
What graphic card are you using?
This is a stretch, but have you tried the ol' standby Defragging your pc. Updated drivers, dying hard drive, and is this exclusive to Rimworld, or is your PC generally tempermental/ or not. I hope your can get this worked out.
I have this problem periodically to. At the moment not...
Strang idea but worth trying. Set rimworld to autostart and restart the computer and se if the game take long time to start. (recommend you set the game to windowed mode.)

Tynan is certain that it's a bug. See above:

I also get this pretty much every time now. Both with and without mods and it takes ages to load, I really hope its fixed for alpha 4
I am getting this Bug as well, load times are excessive without mods. With Mods I haven't been able to wait long enough for the game to actually start up.
I get this Bug every Time. in fact when Im actually thinking about maybe playing some Rimword i start the Game in this Second, i need around 10 Minutes to get to the Main Menu and the same amount of time when I open and close the Mod Tab. The Game itself runs pretty smooth but loading Times are awul. Rimworld is using 15% of CPU Usage in this Situation
I have something similar to this, it results in loading times for any worlds after I've used the mod menu being drastically high, if I close the program after applying mods It doesn't seem to occur.
I checked Performance Monitor, and during long "loading" times RimWorld there's sometimes a prolonged read on ntdll.dll (in System32). This read happens when you click OK when trying to close the mods menu.
Also, why does RimWorld run ~30 threads? That's a bit overkill.
Kind of curious.. For everyone experiencing this issue. Do you have some VPN software installed? maybe hamachi?
I don't know if it's this bug, but I've experienced long loading times whenever I load my colony (I've only been playing since Alpha 3). The program doesn't seem to stop responding, but it takes a minute or two before the colony loads.
I haven't experienced any problems with the mod menu, though, so eh. It might be something else.
Edit: I've confirmed that the program does stop responding when loading. All it takes is a click to grey out the screen.
i some how got this when i was testing out the mod im was making.
and i think this is caused by corrupt data and wrong editing of the def files.

Hmm, but that's weird. I tried a completely new copy of RimWorld in another drive (a RAM disk). It still had long loading times.
One time when I attached a debugger on the process and ran the disassembler on the main thread, there were some interesting procedures that mono.dll (a non-managed library) was looping through.
A4 will add a deep profiling mode to help trace this issue.
Thank you Kioshi!!!!
I uninstalled Hamachi and it works!
The Hamachi trick worked, except that I didn't have to uninstall Hamachi. All I had to do was disable the adapter through Network and Sharing Center > Adapter settings. Now I can enjoy Alpha 4! ;D
well either way I'm happy it worked
