I thought it would be interesting if we could share those moments when your best laid plans fall apart and your frustration levels rise. Not a whinge session but more of a if I told you, you would not believe me. So try to include some pictures as evidence.
I will get us started.
The caravan is planned out, the away team have their powered armour on and they all look keen to get out there. So I click on the form caravan button. The usual madness of putting everything together, animals gathered, food and items to sell stuffed onto the pack muffalos.
Hang on where is Steven? good old Steven has decided that everyone else can do the hard yards he is off to binge on smoke leaf joints. Steven is caught out and everyone else on caravan duties refuses to do anything until Steven is over his binge. Steven sucks down three joints and then decides he is good to go. Everyone else jumps to and starts loading up again, Steven actually wanders off and has a lay down on the floor of his room. Good work Steven.
Right, everyone else has got the caravan loaded and are heading off to the edge of the map. Steven has the munchies and so decides to swing past the kitchen and have a bite to eat. Steven is one of the cooks and has probably prepared the meal he just ate which has given him food poisoning. So stoned off his gourd and throwing up in his powered helmet he staggers towards the edge of the map where everyone including the new baby boy muffallo is wandering around waiting.
So far its been funny a little annoying but mostly funny like a joke that runs on a bit much. Then good old Randy Random stops laughing, like dead pan stops laughing. I have seen that expression on his face before. It means panthers he always shafts me with panthers. RED ALERT man hunter pack of panthers. Ok where have they come in I think to myself. Right on top of the waiting caravan crew no less.
At this point my wife said to me "That game really frustrates you at times doesn't it?" my reply was not very PG. Needless to say I held the 19 panther manhunter pack at the killbox and with 3 colonists left uninjured.

Ok, so here's my story.
It was my second colony. I was slowly pushing forward. A promising medic and farmer being teared down by alphabeavers soon after the beginning was a bit frustrating, not because of the loss itself, but because of the fact that later i repelled dozens of attacks not losing a single man (including one when I had to deal with: 1x bolt-action rifle, 2x light machine gun, 2x machine pistol and 1x steel knife having: 1x bolt-action rifle, 1x pistol, 1x plasteel knife, 1x steel spear, 1x wooden mace and literally no defenses expect improvised cover such as solar panels or rock piles). That should explain why since then alphabeavers were causing an instant mobilisation equal to those announced during raids :-\
And today was the day I assembled my first caravan in order to gather some loot. After surviving (!!!) heavy artillery fire (I wasn't prepared for THIS) and using my sniper to outrange the turrets I've killed the defenders and packed the precious loot on my muffalos. I was afraid that the sniper will die, because the bad conditions during travel made his gunshot wound infected, but he somehow survived also this. (The infection has already turned extreme). Oh and I remember THAT ONE missile that was flying perfectly into my soldiers' heads but in the last second I ordered them to move while not even realising that another projectile was fired. 8) 8) 8)
But my caravan didn't make it. All 3 brave soldiers have been slain. Why? Because they were attacked by chinchillas. Yes, furious CHINCHILLAS. I also was furious after seeing this. I ragequited immediately and deleted the save. That's not something I consider fun or fair, because chinchillas are just small mouse/rat-like animals and obviously in real life aren't aggressive to humans! And even if they do bite, they won't do any serious damage. Especially to people armed with firearms. So here's my question: can someone explain to me how it is possible that 6 chinchillas:
1)attacked a group of 3 people
2)killed a group of 3 people (1x sniper rifle, 2x light machine gun, all above lvl 10 shooting)
I just don't know what to say. It would be okay if the caravan was lost due to bandits or some dangerous animals. But not chinchillas. That's not what I expected. That was way too much for me.
That was Sims Medieval chinchillas. Truly vile beasts. :D
I didn't play Sims Medieval, but for me it's still not okay. The game could throw a bunch of boars at me and that'd be fun. I think that certain animals should never pose any threat to humans (chinchillas, squirrels, etc) but instead you can just have that hungry grizzly and it's perfect in my opinion.
By the way, great game, but I don't remember when I did my last ragequit (propably MANY years ago - ragequits made by a terrible DF GUI don't count here for me)...
The game only has so many animals in it, and they are all genetically modified anyway. You can;t really expect anything to work exactly like its Earth namesake.
Why I never died from sth smaller than a bear :P But then I'd write mine big fail. I played on one colony with just 1 person on Randy Extreme. I got 2 aides in meantime. And then Thrumbo appeared. Thinked: Money came! But standard procedure had suprising effect. I just began to farm Medicine XP on its overall perforation. And... somehow lucky on-tending bond! Well the paradise were short... (It was female one,yea) She became infected in its ear. I had the few medicine only, so it wasn't good. I noticed I can't tend it when it was hmmm... 93%? I took her to found crypto-casket to avoid mood debuff. Then, I reminded that I can remove that ear in desperation. I tried it, but even with 1 more herbal med, I failed. Infection somehow progressed to 100% and goodbye, White! Atleast noone will get her now, tomb is guarded by 4 turrets, 8 planned. :((((((((

This is when your melee guys comes into play.. They most likely would've wiped out those chinchillas. My caravan got ambushed by 3-4 boomrats. They managed to down 4 of my colonists. So drop pod two more thinking they would finish them off if I play it smart. Nope.. These boomrats downed 8 pawns somehow. I had two melees left at home base and I knew what I had to do. Send them to kill the boomrats even though that means they'll explode in their face upon death. I had no choice cause my colony would get infections very soon if I didn't move quick enough. Luckily only one died. :P
Well... I hate melee guys. Firearms is the only thing I trust. Every firefight when I have a melee soldier (it happens ONLY when I don't have enough guns for everyone) I'm getting sick of watching him do nothing while other guys are shooting and getting shot... It turns out for me that even in melee I can deal greater damage by firing SMG/shotgun instead of telling my guy to fight with fists. And I remember that once I had a guy who was passionate about shooting, but was a brawler at the same time (he wasn't passionate about melee, only interested - how is this even possible?!), so every raid he had to rush to the armory for his rifle and then to the trench while others went straight into the trenches. One of the most annoying micros I ever encountered.

Whoa, there's the problem. You're thinking of Earth chinchillas. On the unnamed planet, they're part piranha. :)

Well... I might accept that explanation, but... Most of the animals aren't different from those on Earth considering their appearance and description. At least in my recent colony I have more "luck": firefights, artillery bombardments, fires - that's how I lose people now.
So I started a new save on a17, and since I always use Randy, he screwed me over right at start. Since I tend to make research quickly (I started with only 2 or 3), I built 2 solar panels and 2 batteries. Planning to add more, a pirate raid alert came through quickly, luckily being only one man. After an intense gunfire when my guys dog went to stop him, the pirate got mauled by the dog and headshot by my pawn. I had to attend to my dog quickly, but while foggy rain was going on, a battery decided to pop, obviously traveling through circuit to another, and damaging the solar panels. Rooms were dark, but glitterwood medicine saved the dog.
Lesson: Always build solar panels and batteries under roofs lol
This is the story of the mental daze that ended my colony. I was playing Wealthy Explorer on Cassandra Extreme (tropical rainforest), and had recruited 3 capable allies, with all the essential skills well covered between us.
The base was up and running: wind powered near a patch of fertile soil, with a freezer/kitchen, dining room/workshop (sewing, machining, research), warehouse, hospital, bedrooms, and a large vacant space (recently cleared of an ancient slumbering pirate band and a hive) to be turned into more bedrooms and my endgame workshop. All of this was enclosed in a mostly wooden (but slowly turning to granite) perimeter wall, dotted with periodic sandbagged stone door ambush ports, and 3 kill zone entrance alleys.
And then a psychic ship landed 6 tiles from my dining room. Not ideal, but at least I can start the fight on my terms. So I build my 3 bits of granite wall spaced 4 tiles apart from each other, and position my shooters behind them, with the brawler waiting inside the dining room to pop out if needed.
I shoot the ship, and out pop 4 scythers. The one in front goes down pretty quickly, but the other 3 are behind the ship from my shooting position, so I maneuver from the walls to some nearby stone chunks. My best shooter with the charge rifle is KO'ed as the 2nd scyther goes down.
We trade shots with the remaining 2 scythers and my 2nd best shooter is killed by taking a second shot to the torso. I belatedly realize I have a grenade in the stockpile, and send my brawler to get it while my medic trades fire with the 2 wounded scythers.
As my brawler returns, 1 scyther wanders off for reasons unknown to attack a cooler. My medic and brawler dispatch the remaining scyther, and then kill the final scyther as it returns shortly after aborting it cooler destruction mission, for reasons just as mysterious as those instigating the mission.
After all that, my medic/researcher is bleeding out and conscious (less an eyeball), my grower/shooter is dead, my brawler/laborer is bleeding and conscious (short a kidney), my shooter/constructer/crafter is KO'ed and dying in 7 hours (short a left radius). Pretty bad, but not the end of the world either. I send the medic to do the rescue, and send my brawler to rest (it should be noted that he is incapable of medicine).
And then 1 tile from the hospital bed, my game ends and turns into a movie. My medic goes into a mental daze, dropping my shooter/constructer/crafter to the ground where he dies 5 hours later. She eventually passes out from exhaustion and bleeds to death.
My brawler had been slowly bleeding out this whole time and loses consciousness. As he is recovering, a hive infests the vacant building I recently cleared out. He eventually recovers after nearly a day and a half of being unable to move, and goes into a mental paranoia break shortly after eating his meal.
After he recovers from that, I try to have him repair the cooler (my freezer cooler, of course) and turbine which have broken down in the meantime. He repairs the freezer, grabs a component and is on his way to the turbine when he has a sadism mental break. After terrorizing our pet emu and cassowary (they self tamed), he makes his way into the hive and is eaten by a megaspider.
For me that's the hardest and saddest way for a colony to break. Your just hoping that the hang on and then it falls apart. I was sitting there one time waiting for my elephant that I had trained in rescue take my unconscious pawn to bed while a fire crept closer and closer. Needless to say they burnt to death.
Haha well here's my sad Rimatomics story-
So I launched a nuke at a random location as a test. Haha...ignores it. Later, when about to make caravan, notices massive amounts of fallout near base. F@$&"";&!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zzzt event in the main workshop area. I'd used wood floors and walls because I had a surplus of it at the time, and forgotten about a certain new feature in A18...
Six colonists initially rush in to try and put it out, but by then the floor's on fire and they're all promptly overcome by the heat. Five more colonists run in to try and drag them to safety, and then they get overcome. The only survivor was an elderly ex-mental patient with dementia, who was incapable of doctoring or violence. I sent him to an ancient cryosleep capsule rather than watch him struggle on by himself.

The non-demetia stuck colonists run into fire, while the only one with dementia goes to the safety of cryptosleep. Now who has dementia? ;)
As for me, it was few alphas back, when really cold maps were first introduced. I settled one of the poles, a really cold place with half the year outside temperatures below -100 °C! All was well, until the autumn came.
First, I forgot that the game properly models polar day/night, and since solar panels generate power nonstop during polar day, most of my power came from solars (I mean, there was not even a need for batteries!). So as winter was drawing close, I had less and less energy every day. At first I solved this by building more solars ;) but combined with the need for a HUGE amount of heaters due to the temperature rapidly dropping (over 60 °C difference compared to summer), my steel reserves ran dry very quickly with no way to replenish them. By the time I had completely run out, it was only mid autumn. And thats when it happened.
An evil ship! Crashed not far away, but far enough to be unreacheable by my colonists due to extremely cold weather. My colonists were already not very happy about having to spend all their time cramped inside the only room I was able to afford the heating bill for. So I came with a plan.
One of my colonists was psychically deaf, so I figured I could build some cryopods, and have the other 3 colonists spend the winter frozen (in the good way :D), until the spring comes, and with it a way to get rid of the eyesore of a ship. So I rushed researching the cryopods, everyone on the verge of going berserk anytime now, when the research finished. Needless to say, I totally forgot about the uranium ;D.
P.S. In the end I desperately started digging into the mountain, and was able to find a room with enough cryptopods, all I had to do was fight a bunch of very well equiped soldiers who were inside, and put a bunch of barely conscious super angry colonists inside instead. Then I walled the one colonist alone in the hydroponics room for nearly half a year ;D
Was the most enjoyable game I had so far.

I have a colony of 7, all armed with snipers and assault rifles, in a thriving boreal forest base part in, and part out of some mountains.
I have 3 prisoners with low recruitment chances i've been keeping around because they've great stats.
The prisoners stage a prison break at the WORST time...exiting their prison and entering the bedroom next door where they beat a sniper armed colonist senseless and steal her rifle.
During this time my other 6 colonists are able to get together, and set up in various cover as the prisoners emerge. The two unarmed prisoners bum rush another colonist and aren't hit once while they beat him senseless, while the sniper prisoner 1-shots another nearby colonist. The unarmed prisoners grab the weapons from the killed and beaten up colonists and proceed into a 3 vs. 4 shootout.
A short time later 3 perfectly healthy (save a couple of fist bruises) former prisoners exit my base, while my 2 dead and 5 downed colonists decorate the ground with their blood.
I quit right after, savescummed, then executed the prisoners....screw fairness.

Why you make a prison next to bedrooms? Make it afar from these and the stockpiles! Or get rekt as below. PS:Why you didn't rushed em melee with clubs?
