Title: What size of map everyone playing?
Post by: Mutineer on October 20, 2017, 04:06:22 AM
I generated default map and play for a bit. I see it as a problem the fact that my base already takes 1/4 of the map. It was large hills map, so not so match mountains and I already dig a lot for chanks and minerals. Do not think any left on the map.

So, I wonder what size of map most find most fun why not create too much lag?

Don't remember the excact categorisation right now, but if it was small/medium/large/extra large, then I play on the largest of the two alternatives on large map. The smallest of the large-maps are also OK.

I find those smaller ones all to small like yourself.

yep, not the largest size, but somewhat larger maps. Last time I played on normal size map, I had to cover half the map with power plants just to have enough electricity   :-[

I usually play on the default mapsize or sometimes one bigger. My colony gets pretty big after a while too but I think it's alright.

If you mined all the mountains and resources you can always settle a second map tile next to your colony and therefore create a resource colony. Just increase the number of colonies in the options menu and you're good to go.

Keep in mind that creating a second colony and/or playing on a larger map will negatively impact your performance and you will eventually experience lag since the game has to calculate to many things and can't keep up with the game speed.

I play 225x225 just in hopes that it won't lag the game as much as it already does when I reach a certain point.

200x200 and up. The bigger the laggier!

I like the second largest map size. Gives lots of space for events to occur in and potentially go wrong. It also makes escape pods tough if they land out in the middle of nowhere.

I've finally hit the point where it doesn't behave great during raids. performance on ludeonicrous is generally quite good considering the massive map.

I'm playing 400x400, the max size available.

I play while editing the wiki every time I find something that hasn't been written about yet, and I can feel a computer delay between switching from the game and safari, while in the default size the switch is instant.

In-game, every now and then I can see my pawns walking and then doing a small pull back like if a ghost was pulling his shirt from behind.

Speed x3 is okay if everybody is in morning shift but if you have double shifts it slows down to the point its best to look in x2.

In any Ludeonicrous map you always get two ancient shrines. A lot more steam geysers, but I never use more than one in any game so that doesn't mean much to me, unless maybe in ice sheet. You get a slight more time to prepare vs raids as enemies have to travel more, but not much.

Between elevation types. I don't play mountainous, as I don't like the idea of hiding that much. But I don't play flat so that I don't lose the mining, unless maybe making it my own personal restrictions for more challenge. Coastal and rivers are only aesthetic with no real game experience effect except for maybe large marsh areas that can be used as moats. If only we could fish...

In 400x400 every time you get an escape pod at the map borders you have to unassigned medical beds to normal beds so that you can create a medical sleeping spot to treat the wounds at the crash site as they may not survive the journey back home. In this map I have ancient asphalt road but maybe because it's tropical forest or not but pawn pathing is horrible to the point most of the time the colonists walk anywhere but on them... I get it, they are broken by time, but I think they were meant to speed up the pace somehow. If only we could re-install those ancient concrete barriers and lampposts...

I tend to play the largest or one down, more resources, more time to prepare for events. I am lucky that i dont seem to suffer lag/slowdowns that others complain of except in thte most extreme circumstances (like 100 alphabeavers decide to chew on your wood)

A screen with the options:
In my next playthrough I want to try the 300*300:

PS: are the performance drops linked to the fact that RM isn't multi-threaded?

I find the default map size a little too small.
Usually play on 1 or 2 sizes up.

i play minimum, I hate the RNG of a raid suddenly "appearing" between a hunter or hauler and home.  I'm don't like having the game just decide "that pawn is dead"

plus hauling, hunting, map upkeep are all easier on the smallest maps.  My bases hold 12-20 pawns and barely take up 1/4 of the smallest maps...if that.

I tend to play on the largest map size, as I enjoy having tons of space to work with, and the game doesn't lag until I get a TON of people on the map at once (late-game raids with 100+ members), or there's a huge fire. Lately I've been playing with ice sheet/extreme desert maps though, so no fires to be had.

My current extreme desert is pretty fun, though it's definitely a challenge to keep the colony from overheating when the temp outside the door is pushing 230F.

325x325. Don't want lag, do want the room to breath and collect resources.

I've run largest size with 16 colonists and dozens of animals on screen and it definitely chugs a bit when zoomed out. I usually go with second-largest now to avoid that. Any smaller is way too small. I feel there's just too much content in the game now for smaller sizes to work. I like having some distance between the map edge and my walls.

Since I like making large colony I prefer large maps also it's a lot fun than normal size

I mostly play smallest or standard. Never had problems with expanding my base. Except for Tundra, where it feels to be more swampy which blocks large parts of the map sometimes.

The big benefit of smaller maps, in my opinion, is that animals are easier to reach as they cannot run too far away (Map border 300 tiles away instead of 500).

I always play on maps with max size. I don't like borders and feeling that you stuck in the cage.

I play maximum Ludeoncrilous. I'm not one of those people who just leaves the game at speed 4 all day, so lag is not an issue. (Also lag is not an issue in general with a decent CPU)

The other map sizes just seem so confining. You build one compound and you're already at the edge of the map. On a max map you can build a small fortress with outlying farm lands and blockhouses and still have space between you at the raid spawns.

Prefer the largest setting to give a more realistic feel about how base defenses would really work, but now I play the smallest map to avoid lag better.

Perhaps I'm a bit off topic but could people playing on larger maps please share their pc specs (guess it's mainly cpu and ram that matter) and the amount of mods running?

I also prefer map to be as large as I can (as my pc can). Was always some of the two large sizes. Playing with at least 30 mods. Not hugely overpopulated colony I guess about 10-16 colonists max and a herd of animals but I usually like to make it as advanced as possible utilizing maximum of the mod content (energy, temperature systems, lots of benches with additional functionalities for the efficient workflow, cool turret defenses, spaceport and stuff like that, this time I'd like to add hygiene and maybe factorio kind of mod).

I would like to estimate the maximum size I can handle with my i7 4770k 3.5 GHz and 16gb RAM (780Ti if gpu matters). Any advice on max map size for these specs would be great!

And a follow up question, which kinds of mods are the most performance heavy?

My machine specs are comparable. My processor is AMD though. My GPU is Nvidia 1050TI. I typically play second largest. I do see some slowdown late game, but take anything I say with a grain of salt. I play heavily modded. as for which are most performance heavy, it's hard to tell. anything that increases the number of ticking pawns will get expensive after a while depending on how many.

Do ticking pawns include only colonists, raids and animals or does it have more broad meaning?

This Mac was bought for my DJ-ing but I have installed Civilization V and RW plus VIRB edit (Like a GoPro camera application but for VIRB) as I'm an outdoorsy & traveler to edit videos. But once I get full gigs around cities, only the DJ stuff will remain, I need fast rebooting in a live venue.

I play Vanilla only. The two largest sizes cause some minimal bearable lag and some delay when I switch from the game to RimWorld Wiki to do edits.

Rubber banding. Yeah, I thought that was just me. In my games, sometimes when big raids come in, I can see the raiders do this. It's strange, because it's not just popping back to where they WERE; instead, it's more like the blob of raiders is  this flexible ball of rubber or something.

basically anything that moves on a map. any humanlike or animal that's active.

I prefer Default or 275x275 or maybe 300x300 and 325x325.

It runs fine. But i don't want to risk a some or a major lag in late game with ludeonicrous sized maps.

I will need that for having more space building my colony. (Yes i build in outdoors.) And mining materials. It does help but the cons of having a large map is when having a space chunk drop or a useful cargo pods containing medicine drop off near the edge of the map. You have walk very far away. And hunting, most of the animals will stay near the borders of the map and of course walking there to hunt for food...
and friendly caravans will take time to reach your colony depending where you built it and where they spawned.

But the pros of having a large map, with raids or manhunter packs arriving. Depending where you built your colony is that it will take them time to reach your colony while preparing your defenses. and of course raining mortar on em'. With larger maps, harvesting and mining resources is a bit more plentiful, and there would be more steam geysers appearing but the problem with steam geysers in those maps is most of the time that they would appear far away from your colony. Larger maps also has a increasing chance of a ancient ruins appearing in numbers. (Don't know if its a pro or a con, i say it's neutral)

Well that's all i got to say! Sometimes i go default but i eat up some resources in the map quickly sometimes. ;D

Has anyone experienced ludeonicrous sizes in late game with mods? Are they as laggy as legend tells?
Should I stay away of them with my specs?

I use 325x325. They can get a bit laggy, but you can generally tolerate it if you use RuntimeGC.
