My colony survives buy harvesting organs from unwanted prisoners and growing drugs, then selling them to the pirates. I got lucky with a colonist that happened to be and excellent medic as well as a psychopath. Her name is Dot and she loves blood. I like to imagine that the enemy tribes and pirate colony's wonder where their raiders have gone, only to find their friends when they get thrown into the prisoner hole waiting their turn.
Or maybe they unknowingly bought their friend's organs from orbital traders... in order to heal from an injury caused by raiding you!
