Title: Map Generation 16 versus 18
Post by: dragonalumni on January 20, 2018, 06:39:14 AM
Hi,
As the poll states I'm curious about the general experience with maps in version 18. I especially enjoy building my bases in the gorges between mountains or on the side of the mountains, optimally I'll be looking for a bit of rich soil and a geyser within range. In version 18 however my luck has been so bad I can't even find a decent mountain to build against it's like mountain generation (defense) has been nerfed.

:'(
Confirm my suspicions or call me crazy, just want to see the results.  (Also feel free to share some seed(s) for larger maps with good potential mountain bases, I'm tired of rolling new maps)

You just wrote "mountain" but not what kind of biome.
Some biomes don't got rich soil, maybe you allways picked the wrong one.

Easiest way is to download

and configurable maps from here

Should solve any of your issues. I now basically play in canyon (basically all mountain split in half by river with few creeks of farmable soil) thanks to combo of these.

Even though nobody agrees with me I'm going to stick with to my guns (opinion) that with caves, rivers and whatever else has changed, I just haven't had the same luck getting a decent map, I haven't gotten very far in v18 map at all because I just have no love for what I roll up.

I'm also very anti-mod especially during betas I just want to play the game in vanilla, rolling new guys and such each time is a bit of a bother and makes me take breaks that last days and days.

re: Canute -- boreal forest / mountains  -- It's what I play 90% of the time. Previously they always had a preety good chance of a nice spot to hunker down. Not every map but 33% chance of something I would want to invest time into.

Thanks for the feedback though, everyone else seems happy so.. um.. meh.

Rimworld may be in beta, officially, but it's mod implementation is rock-solid. There is no reason not to use them if they offer something you like. I use Map Reroll myself and it's exactly what you're looking for. After you pick a landing spot, if you don't like the geography, you can roll a new map right there, without going back to character creation. It has optional mineral costs to rerolling, if this sounds too OP for you.

I agree with you Dragon. Something was changed in the way the game generates hills. I have a feeling it is tied or a result of roads and rivers being added a few patches ago.

I'm sure that it is, and it's not about OP or not OP, it's just that I hope that the finished game without mods is going to be something that I love. We prolly all know the gaming climate these days is something goes generally like "game G is shit but can be saved with mods x,y,z,..". Hopefully devs will take a solid look at mountain maps and compare them to earlier versions, they are IMHO, just not nearly as cool after caves/rivers/roads or whatever else ruined the chance for the kind of map I used to play (and love playing) on 16.

Appreciate the support.
