I believe it's the plural form of pilum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilum), throwing spears most commonly associated with the Romans. If that's what they are, they are a bit odd to pair with rock throwers and bow guys because they are comparatively high tech weapons.

It's a melee weapon, im sure of it.

its throwing spear with a iron tip designed to bend/break upon impact to  inflict more damage as well as render the weapon unable to be thrown back.

They are ranged weapons in game. Nasty ones too. They hit like a truck.

It's a thrown spear/javelin. They're definitely the scariest thing to see a tribal with now. I grabbed the stats for one already:

QuoteDamage: 45
Range: 24
Accuracy: 4
Fire Type: Single-Shot
Aim Time: 4.3 seconds

It takes awhile to throw, but woe to the person it hits.

What LZPanzer said and also to drag down shields by making them too cumbersome to hold correctly with the added weight of the pilum "attached" essentially making a hole in a shield wall type formation.

Really, this weapon is hell! Killed a settler with only one head shot!

Can't wait to have every last one of my colonists armed with these puppies. 45 damage? Are you kidding me? Is it more than the default sniper rifle?

M-24 stats:

QuoteDamage: 40
Range: 45
Accuracy: 9
Fire Type: Single Shot
Aim Time: 4.3 seconds

The M-24 is far superior in accuracy and range, but deals slightly less damage.

Just faced 3 of them in battle. R.I.P Mellor. All he needed was two pila(s?) and then he was down. Nearly lost my colony because of those damn things. Tribal sniper rifles from hell I tell you.

Scipio picks up two pila, he throws the first pilum and it hits, the second pilum however misses once he throws it.

(In other words; 1 Pilum, 2 Pila, Many Pila, A pile of pila :p )

They might be a bit much. I'll nerf them down.

Yeah IRL, each soldier usually carried between 1 and 4 pila, and after throwing them they would charge with short swords or another melee weapon. Also, they usually had a shield.

Hmmm well they were usually between 1.5 and 2ft long (and quite thick relative to later longswords) thing is most people generally start at longsword in their minds and anything shorter than about 3ft becomes a shortsword. A broadsword would probably be a better term for most roman swords

the word nerf... it scares me every time i hear it.

Will you be adding melee weapons soon? equip the tribals with stone swords and stuff then.... (alongside the pilum and bow)

I like the pilae as they are, honestly. They hurt if they hit you but they're slow firing, if you keep your colonists moving then you can avoid having them thrown at you, it's a neat mechanic.
