You random, but i got one many years ago... Actually from the Alpha days when it came out in Early access for steam.

Poorly equipped colony armed with nothing but pistols, a shotgun and two survival rifles before they were called bolt-action rifles.

I got two manhunting rhinoceros from randy, i can't take them out so i hid everyone in a rundown shack.

Until i got a message from a Refugee being chased by Angry Tribesmen. I wasn't going to accept him at first, but then i realized that i had two rhinos knocking at my door. So i said okay come one right in, even though there were two rhinos at my door...

Luckily i made the Refugee survive by walking to the western mountain separating my colony, before the angry tribals arrive.

As predicated, Angry ooga boogas came in and attacked my colony directly and forgotten about that refugee that angered them,
Two angry Rhinos jump, on ooga boogas killed some while their warriors killed one rhino and wounded the other.

Until they go... Ooogga waggaaa eeeeee!!!! And run away from that one wounded rhino, and then angry rhino killed the chief.

After that from the shack the doors opened with an small angry mob lightly armed but they killed the rhino easily. Then i almost forgot that refugee when he was now upset because then he had some mediocre stats but he was my diplomat because of high social stats...

And Named Him Pickles cause he had a pickle for brains and had some mental breaks, but i will always call him that one guy that came when i had a rhinoceros problem and summoned a bunch of angry tribesmen to fix my manhunting rhino rampage problem... And those were from my noob days!

Not as funny right now, but it was Random because of Randy, even though he wanted to see my colony burn down, guess he laughed at Pickle's misery as well and those tribals walking into a mommy and daddy rhinos, and almost getting killed by them... :P

This reminds me of a feature Gnomoria.  When goblins attacked you could chop them up and make them into sausages / sandwiches / etc., and then you could tell one of your gnomes to carry the stack to a goblin village to enrage them ("look what we did to your brothers!") and provoke an even larger attack next season.

It would be neat if Rimworld had a similar taunting feature; send a video of the humiliation of one of your captives to the local pirate base to provoke an attack so that way they can deal with the ship part that landed and save you the trouble.

Had a tribal Base in a tropical swamp biome.
Trade caravan of another (gentle) tribe arrived.
The colonists were all busy in the fields, so the caravan was waiting for a while.
Caravan leader, who happened to have the trait "pyromaniac" went on fire starting spree out of boredom.
80% of the base lost to the fire.  :'(

Actually, i always build an second freezer...

Just to hide dead bodies full of raiders that i have killed, Even for non-cannibal colonies... Let's just say, they are a better alternative to dog food... Or making Chemfuel, i'm low in chemfuel supplies. ;)

;D

It was a temporary solution that lasted longer than it should have. The room actually existed when I started on the map (though I tore down the steel walls and put up granite at some point). Once I got mortars I put shells in there for easier access, and it already had a table so pawns could get there instead of stupidly eating anywhere (they still do, but yeah..). Then a big raid came, and we had lots of bodies. I figured I could use them as food for the army of panther haulers instead of cremating them all. So I put two coolers in there (to combat hot summer). This is briefly after that, before moving the table outside.

Pawns weren't too happy about seeing corpses everywhere, especially the rotting ones that couldn't fit in the new freezer, or turned bad in the heat. But *I* found it pretty funny, eating a nice lunch with a headless corpse lying right next to them. Life on the Rim is harsh! :D

Ahhh, so you temporarily converted your ammo depot/lunch room into a corpse closet... well that at least makes some sense, lol.  I do find it hilarious that Sofia has two corpses at the table to chat with while eating.

Wow. I've never seen anything close to this high resistance before, well over 100. He's not even that good, but with two nice traits (and one terrible). Resistance appears to heavily rely on traits, and not so much skills.

Poor girl came back a second time. Not so lucky now. Saw another guy earlier too, that was lagging far behind his buddies. He had a leg shot off, injuries still not healed, and an eye cut out. Then I remembered. This was a prisoner with a bionic eye that we decided to borrow before releasing him. I find it pretty cool that this can happen, and that raiders aren't just randomly generated for each raid.

So I thought if I played with Randy / Rough I would get a reasonable threat level...

<Refugee event> -- ok, I previously decided I'm going to try to save everyone I can, and the last three raids were easy, how bad can this be?

13 raiders with LMGs and assault rifles and other kit show up... against my colonists with simple rifles... ok, this is still manageable...

<Manhunter Pack> -- 17 manhunting hares show up just as the 13 raiders reach my defenses.  Oh crap.  I'm dead.

<devmode explosions>
<change AI to Phoebe>

I think I'm done trying to fight the AI, I'll just turtle, it's much less aggravating.

22 manhunting pigs...

Only two people weren't downed, with Vole (imaged) in the most dire condition bleeding out hard (not 'downed' any more, but he was). One of the not-downed-ones are incapable of doctoring. The other has 0 skill.

If we live, we'll be dining on bacon for quite a while.

Stupid animals though. Both can rescue people. The panther picks up 14 dropped meat to freezer. The domesticated pig comes running -- and picks up a dead pig. How about the horde of downed and bleeding out people?  :( Wish they put that on the top of their to-do list basically instantly.

This is why with the "Pawns are Capable!" mod.  It's ridiculous that one pawn will refuse to wrap up the injuries of another and stop him from bleeding to death.  With the mod they just get mood penalties which ensure that you're not training them to be competent medics... so if you do have to rely on them, they are going to suck at it.  Which is perfectly fair.

The only part of it that's OP is that pawns prohibited from "Violent" are too effective in combat.  Combats usually don't last long enough for the mood penalties to kick in significantly.
Title: Re: Random, funny (?) events from the Rim
Post by: Pangaea on October 15, 2019, 08:43:58 AM
I've looked at that mod, but as strange as it sounds given the above problems (especially given that Mie sadly died of an infection -- simply too much crap happening at once with subsequent raids), I kinda like that some pawns have faults like this. And speaking from personal experience I'd probably be hopeless as a medic anyway, so might apply :D

That said, there are some traits I refuse into my colony if I have any say over it. Or the pawns will have to be MIGHTY good to compensate. Incapable of violence, chemical fascination/interst. Those are the big ones. Don't like pymaniac either, but we can at least work with that. Don't want depressive and suchlike either, but it depends on other skills whether I accept them or not.

Thought this was pretty amusing. Guess she had second thoughts. Within five hours  ;D ;D

I had that last scenario with the lovebirds in my last game, but it went down a little differently:

* Borne proposed marriage to Onesan.  Onesan rejected the proposal.
* Borne was really sad, but took some time to himself to think about things.
* Onesan took some time to think about things too.
* Onesan comes back to Borne a day later and is like "You know what, you were right.  Life is short, we should get married!"  Cue big expectant grin.
* Borne replies, "yeah, well, I was thinking, and I'm not sure we actually get along that well together.  I think we should split up."  Cue Onesan's grin crashing to grief.

Yep.  They ended up disliking each other; it was a big fiasco.  Oops.

Each one had their proposal rejected, so they were both miserable.  Several days of moping and refusing to work from one, I think the other either managed to keep working or had a food binge?

Started with a tribe couple on Randy medium on a temperate map. The guy had the trait "tough", the girl "nimble". They started with virtually nothing.

After around one year of setting up a base, a rainy thunderstorm came and set the forest on fire. Inside the forest was the big room with the cryptosleep caskets. Everything spiraled downwards as the fire destroyed its  steel walls. Suddenly the wall collapses and a bunch of mechanoids (three cutter and one lancer) came out. In the same second the roof collapsed on one cryptosleep casket, releasing 6 ancient soldiers, which started a fight with the mechanoids. One mechanoid ran to the base and attacked my tribals.

The carnage had just started, then Randy threw in a single raider from another tribe. While everybody was fighting, this guy set up a fire on the fields, which were ripe for harvest. Somehow my tribals managed to overwhelm the mechanoid, while the remaining ancient soldiers barely defeated the others. They had several casualties and the remaining two dropped as well, because they were bleeding.

My tribals went on fighting that single enemy raider while the fire in the base went on rampage. Just as they downed that raider, Randy threw in a cold snap. After finally getting the fire under control, more than half of the base and the food store was burned down. The surviving plants were killed off by the cold. My tribals were badly injured and went to their sleeping spots for some healing.

Here I found a disadvantage of the trait tough: Both tribals were starving as no food sources were available (I did not dare to force them to consume the corpses, as their mood was already very low - I am playing with the Psychology mod) and the guy dropped dead from starvation just while moving to harvest a berry bush.

I barely managed to save the tribal girl and she needed almost a quadrum to clean up and repair the base. Then a prisoner rescue quest came in with an antigrain warhead as reward. I sent the girl on the rescue quest, the base was simple with one enemy which she downed without any problems. The guy she saved was as jealous psychopath  ::)

So both took all they could carry from the base and went back. Halfway back another thunderstorm and another forest fire which was threatening the base. As they arrived, the fire was like 4-5 cells away from the base quickly coming closer. Both ran to the base to extinguish fires. As soon as they arrived: BOOOM!, girl dead by 133 damage - the fire had triggered the antigrain warhead, the other faction had sent as reward for the quest....

...that made me sad yesterday.

That's a great write-up and I can see how that must have been very frustrating. Yet also funny in a sense, perhaps. And on a bright note, at least the jealous psycho won't be jealous of somebody else having a better bedroom -- since he's the only person left!

Ok, this one looks a bit weird:

After yesterdays disaster (see above) I started over with the same characters (thanks to PrepareCarefully).
This time I choose Savanna biome because less forest would cause less trouble with fires....

I built like three buildings around 7x7 in size and three fields, 7x7 as well. On one field I planted cotton, I wanted the characters to rely on foraged food in the beginning therefore i did not send them hunting. One of the fields i set to cotton to be able to craft some tribalwear soon.

The days passed and then - just a day before the cotton was ready for harvest: a blight
The blight came around 22h, just when the colonists went to bed - when they stood up at 6 in the morning, the whole crop was already lost.

"Ok, that can happen", I thought and let them plant everything over.
Again days passed, again just a day before the harvest - my pawns were caravanning to destroy an enemy base...: Toxic fallout

When they came back days later, the crop was lost ...again.

Still naked, my tribals planted another round of cotton.
Again just a day before the harvest - the base had already expanded with additional wooden buildings and a big wooden fence around to prevent the Thrumbos eating the crops -: Dry Thunderstorm!

This time Randy went full Zeus on me and the lightnings struck like 5 times inside the base and like three of them in the fields. My pawns were a bit away on the map, as soon as they arrived most of the base was already burning.

About 80% of the base burned down, Randy triggered several resource drop pods: medicine, peg legs and go-juice. I felt pranked...

Snowpig,
some questions to you ?
When the blight comes at 22h, why you don't wake up your pawn and force them to cut the blight plants ?
Why do you doing caravaning while you have so much to do at your home map ?

About burning bases, fields. I try to enclose these with stone wall's, they don't burn. This even give you some time to react when a raider want to breakthrough to ignite your field.
You can't affort it when raiders ignite/destroy your powersource at each attack, you will run out of componets/steel.
Maybe just plant at regular soil at your backyard, rather then at rich soil that is a bit away and get eaten/ignite.

I do some roleplaying. For example I research only neolithic tech first. In addition i start mining stones only after researching stone cutting. Same for steel and smithing.

Therefore my tribals were in both cases pre-stone-age.

An affair? Goddamnit.

That's great. Your husband is unconscious in hospital after bravely fighting 19 angry scythers that dropped right on top of us and almost killed us all.

You were happily m.. Oh.

Oh well. I'm sure nothing wrong can happen from screwing the wife of your best friend.

Do I actually give them a double bed? I don't wanna!! :D Damn bastards.

Poor guy will have a bad day when he wakes up. Doubt he will laugh out loud  :-\

For some reason I found this hilarious.

"Welcome traders! Don't mind the guy on fire, or the corpses laying about."

(hushed voices) "I don't like them. We'll use their toilets and tables, it was a long trip, but can we please leave soon?"

Never gave the cheater a bed with the lover. A long, long time later they split up, and the married couple is doing better now. Got some "loving" back, so sounds like the marriage has heated up again. The -80 from killing the brother decayed and is gone, so that helped.

Colonists A and B are rivals. During a firefight against scythers, A accidentally hits B with friendly fire and kills him in one shot.

Cue "my rival died" buff. "Accidentally"... yeah... :D
